Sirella’s povThe days blurred together in Donovan's pack. Wake up. Eat. Work. Sleep. Repeat. It felt like I was being used in this place but what could I do except obey whatever order I was given.Every morning, I'd step outside to find maids "accidentally" passing by my door. Guards always seemed to be sharpening weapons nearby. Why they did it in front of my door and not elsewhere bothered me but I knew they didn’t trust me. I could see their eyes following me everywhere I would go. Today was no different. I walked toward the kitchen, the autumn wind biting through my thin shirt. Two warriors leaned against the hallway walls, pretending not to watch me. "Morning, traitor," one muttered as I passed. I kept walking as I ignored them. They were not worth my time. The warm kitchen smelled of bread and herbs. Cooks moved around each other in a practiced dance, but the rhythm broke when I entered. "Need more bandages for the soldiers in the next camp," I said to the head cook. “Wo

Sirella’s povI decided to go to my room seeing as I was done with socializing for the day. I already had the guards on my case, the maids gossiping about me and now the prince after me again. I needed some time away from all this mess to relax and think of my next move. However, the moment I turned to leave I saw a maid in my way.“You startled me,” I said while taking my hand to my chest to soothe it.She didn’t even have the slightest remorse as he looked at me and the blood on the floor.“The alpha suggests you come to his study,” she said with a sneer on her face.“Now?” I asked. “Can it be done…”“Now,” she didn’t want as she turned around and walked towards the alphas study as I sighed and knew I had no choice but to follow. Within minutes, we got to the door as she raised her hand to knock on the door.“Get in,” his gruffly voice said as she stepped aside and bowed before walking off.I took in a deep breath before opening the door and getting in as I instantly regretted it.

Sirella’s povThe moment I got into my room, I took a deep breath as I turned around and froze. I wasn’t alone in my room.I could see his eyes burning into mine as he growled with the windows shaking a bit.Damian was standing in the middle of the room as he looked at me with hatred in his eyes.“You know,” he started. “I’ve seen a lot and heard a lot of things but I’ve never actually known why they are the way they are.”I didn’t get a chance to react when he moved through the room in a second with his speed as he grabbed my arm and slammed the door shut as he kicked it and slammed me against the door.“Answer me with the truth before I tear you apart,” he snarled. “What were you doing with my father?”I could smell what he had for lunch and the smell of whiskey still fresh on his face.I tried to pull free. "He summoned me to the pool. I had no choice—" “No choice?” He scoffed. “Speak the truth you vermin before I crush you without feeling anything.”“It is the truth,” I struggled

Sirella’s povI sat on my bed, staring at the wall. Three sharp knocks drew my attention before the door creaked open. Immediately two men rushed in, arms full of a billowing blue fabric that caused my heart to suddenly race and my chest constrict. A maid scurried in after them, wringing her hands together so fast I feared they might twist off."The Alpha wants you with him," the maid said to me and avoided my eyes. "He wants to see the first gown."I let my hands form fists before I spit out a short, "Alright."The tailors descended on me like vultures. Cold hands tugged at my tunic. I batted them away. Stupid leeches. They hesitated, but then stepped back. The maid stayed, watching as if I might make a run for it.The gown was a weight I wasn’t used to. It felt like a hundred blankets on my back—all that synthetic fabric, the designs grinding into my shoulders as the seamstresses pinched and stitched the hemline shorter to fit me. Gorgeous,” said one of the tailors. He stepped back

Sirella’s povThe dining hall was huge when I entered with my new outfit scraping behind me. A long table was in the middle and tall candles burned on top of silver stands, filling the room with a warm golden light. Servants went around silently putting plates that had steaming food on them. The whole hall smelled of roasted meat and fresh bread.I was seated at the left side of the table, I sat with my hands folded into my lap looking down to the plate below me. It had potatoes meal with gravy, vegetables and a big piece of roasted meat. Everything looked so delicious but I just couldn’t eat because my belly was too tensed up.I waited for a while before the door opened and alpha Donovan entered with his smile that made my skin crawl.“You’re here already,” he smiled. “I’m sorry… I had a meeting to attend. It was last minute but being an alpha… what isn’t?”He was wearing a black shirt that clung to his muscular chest as his confidence rose to a high level.“You look lovely in that

Sirella’s povThe sun was rising the next day, the soft light filtering through the window and painting the floorboards a pale gold. I sat up in bed, my heart hammering delightedly already. Today was the day Alpha Donovan said we would go out into the pack.I did not want to go.I wanted to stay in my room, the one place I could find some peace. At least it would be good here, but I was also curious to see how the upper parts of the pack was.I got up and went to my bathroom to wash my face.I got out of the bathroom to see a maid had put out a dress for me. It was a soft brown, plain dress but probably the nicest thing I’d ever worn.I dressed slowly. My hands were shaking in my excitement. I brushed my hair with my mother's brush as a knock came on the door."Come in," I said, in a low voice. The door slid back and Donovan entered. He looked different in the morning light. He hadn’t worn his usual flowing, black coat today. Just a dark shirt and pants, heavy boots on his feet. His h

Sirella’s povWe made our way back to the packhouse, my feet sore within a few hours of walking through the village. The sky was brighter now and the air warmer. I went up the stone steps behind Alpha Donovan as he opened one of two heavy wooden doors.“Come,” Alpha Donovan said, holding it open for me. “I want to show you something.”I studied him, uncertain. “Show me what?”His smile widened. “You’ll see.”I wasn't sure, but I nodded anyway. "Alright."We continued walking to the side of the packhouse. Behind it was an empty field where grass had been beaten short and a row of straw targets with painted red circles in the center had been set up off to one side. Bows and arrows lay on a bench. This was where some of the guards came to shoot arrows and learn archeries. I remembered here like it was yesterday.“I like to shoot arrows when my mind is full,” Donovan said as he picked up a bow. “It helps me focus.” I looked around. “You shoot?”He nodded. “Yes. And today, I want you to w

Sirella’s povThe next day, I went into the garden again. This time alone. I wanted to think for myself and not be cooped up in my room as I had been in a while. The sun was not so hot. All around it was still and shady; the flies, the wind, and my memory of Kieran and how I missed him. I waited here but to be honest, I didn’t know what I was waiting for.Maybe peace. Maybe answers. I didn’t know.I couldn’t shake the weird feeling in my chest from what happened with Damien. His words were like knives. I wanted to think away but they lodged in my chest, an old wound that wouldn’t heal.Suddenly I heard footsteps as I glanced up. It was Alpha Donovan. He wasn’t smiling. He walked over to me slowly and stopped directly in front of me. “May I sit?” he asked.I nodded my head. “Yes.”He sat down next to me. We didn’t say anything for a while. Then he turned to me.“You have been silent since yesterday,” he said.I nodded while looking at my hands. “I have because I don’t want to cause a

Donovan’s povThe meeting room was noisy. Noisier than usual.Everyone was talking at the same time. The council elders, the war generals, even the younger captains. They all wanted to say something. All their voices were blending together like a tempest in my mind.I sat silently at the table, my fingers interlaced before me. I didn’t speak up. I just sat there in silence. Or… tried to.“We need more wolves at the east border!” one of the elders shouted.“No, we should attack from the north!” another said, as he hit the table with his hand.“We can’t do that. They expect that!” a younger general yelled back.I sighed again, and fell back into my chair. The war talk had been going on for hours. Since sunrise.Everyone was scared of Salvatore. And I knew why. He was powerful. Dangerous. He ruled by fear. He took whatever he wanted. And now he was coming to get us.But all this noise wasn’t helping.“Alpha Donovan,” one of the old council members said. His name was Elric. He was almost

Donovan’s povI stepped back into the throne room. The noise was gone. No shouts. No angry words. The only sound was that of boots on the stone floor, and the whispering of robes as The Elders adjusted themselves in their seats. They were all there again. The council. The generals. The old advisors. Some had cups of tea. Some just sat with hands folded.I moved towards the front and glanced around the room.“Now I think everyone is calm,” I said. They turned to me. Some of them nodded, others whispered, “Yes.”I moved up to the table and took my seat at the head. “Fine,” I said, “let’s talk like wolves. We’re not children any more.”They all went still, waiting for me to say something more.I pressed forward. “So tell me what kind of plan you think we should put together. I want it all on the table. Every idea. We need to be good and right, okay? Not just strong.”Elric, the oldest of the elders, was the first to clear his throat.“I think we should put our best warriors at the east g
