“A mistake?” he repeated, his voice low. “Is that what you really think?” “Yes,” I said firmly, even as my heart betrayed me by pounding harder in my chest. “It was a mistake. And I don’t want anything to do with you.” For a moment, he didn’t respond. His gaze bore into mine, searching for something I wasn’t sure I could give. Then, to my surprise, he sighed and stepped back. “If that’s how you feel,” he said quietly, “then I’ll respect it. But I hope you’ll give me the chance to prove you wrong.” My voice failed me, caught somewhere between disbelief and panic. I stood there, frozen, unable to find the words to respond.
