Chapter 1

Larisa's POV“Congratulations, Larisa,” one of the guests said as they walked in and shook my hands. “Benjamin’s about to make waves in the business world.”“Thank you,” I replied gingerly, barely able to contain my excitement. Tonight was the night Benjamin and I had worked so hard for, and I couldn't have been prouder. It had been a tough few weeks working so hard on that presentation, proving to Mr. Paterson why Benjamin deserved to take the reins instead of his elder brother, and everything had been worth it in the end. The announcement has been made already, and by Monday Benjamin would officially take over Paterson Financial Group.I turned to look across the hall and spotted Benjamin standing near the window, his face illuminated by the soft glow of his phone. His eyes were narrowed in concentration, and then, as if sensing my gaze, he looked up. He gave me a smile, no, not a real one, it looked forced, hollow. Just as I was about mouthing what's wrong? He turned around and h

Chapter 2

Larissa’s PovBenjamin and I turned sharply to the door, only to catch sight of a maid's wide, horrified eyes. Her gaze fixed on Lara’s lifeless form on the floor, and in an instant, she opened her mouth and let out a scream that was nothing short of a nightmare. Her eyes darted wildly from Benjamin to me, then back to Lara’s body. Her lips parted, but no words or scream came out; instead, she slammed the door shut behind her and bolted.“There’s a dead body upstairs!” Her voice rang out. “Someone’s been killed!”My heart dropped as I heard her shouting. I glanced over at Benjamin, who looked as pale as a ghost.“No– no, no, no,” Benjamin muttered as we both scrambled after her, knowing we had seconds before everything would spiral out of control. But it was too late.By the time we reached the top of the stairs, the room below was in chaos. The guest stared at us with a mixture of shock and confusion.Benjamin and I exchange glances before slowly making our way down the stairs. The

Chapter 3

Larissa's POVDays bled into each other, and in the blink of an eye, three weeks had gone by. Benjamin had visited twice since then, and we had only spoken on the phone a handful of times.Even though Mr. Thomas had assured me the last time he was here that he had everything under control, I felt this emptiness and restless ache that gnawed on my insides. I don't know if this has to do with the fact that I hadn't laid eyes on Benjamin for over three weeks. “Just five more days, Larissa, and this nightmare will all be over,” I muttered, running my fingers along the grooves of the bench.A small smile spread across my lips as I pictured what it would feel like to walk out of here, to be free of these walls.“Congratulations are in order for the new CEO of Patterson's Financial Group, Benjamin Patterson,” the voice of the radio anchor snapped me out of my thoughts at the mention of Benjamin. “ Benjamin Patterson is off the market!” The anchor squealed. My lips spread into a wide smile,

Chapter 4

Larissa's POV“Brayden?” I whispered, the words barely escaping my lips, as the officer closed the door leaving just Brayden and I.“Hello, Larissa,” he stepped away from behind the officer's desk, his mouth tugged into a faint smirk.“What are you doing here?” I asked irritatedly. Seeing him and not Benjamin like I had hoped riled me up. “Just checking in on you,” he responded.“You and I both know that's a lie,” I said boredly. “What’s the real reason why you're here?”“Ah, still as feisty as ever. Good,” he stepped closer, his cologne lingering in the small space. “You're going to need to keep that fire alive for what's to come.”“I'm done here,” I turned around to leave, but he said something that made me stop in my tracks.“I know you didn't kill Lara,” he said calmly.I still didn't turn around and didn't say a word either, because I have no idea how much he knew, or if he was just guessing. From what I know, Brayden and Benjamin didn't have a relationship as brothers. Brayden

Chapter 5

Larissa's POV The hearing started a bit late due to the fact that we had to formally state it on record and also get the judge's approval of me changing my attorney, on the grounds that I didn't trust him. Luckily for me, the changes were accepted by the judge without a hassle.Mr. Thomas was visibly furious, but I couldn't care less. He was working for Benjamin, and given the current development I'm sure as hell that he wasn't working in my favor.“Case number 2847, State vs. Larissa Knowles,” the clerk’s voice boomed, as we all settled down. The case started off with the prosecutor presenting evidence, the first which was a personal diary that supposedly belonged to Lara.“Your Honour, this is the personal diary of Ms. Lara Sylvester, the victim in this case,” the prosecutor announced, handing it over to the bailiff, who in turn gave it to the judge. “In it, she expresses concerns about her safety due to Ms. Knowles' insecurities and erratic behavior.”The judge flipped through the

Chapter 6

Larissa's POV The courtroom was so quiet, you didn’t even need to pay attention to hear a pin drop. Time seemed to stretch out for an eternity as I waited for the judge to deliver his verdict. My heart was beating away wildly in my chest I feared the whole courtroom could hear it and that it was going to burst out of my chest. I felt nauseous and anxious; I gripped the edge of the table, willing my trembling hands to remain steady.“…the court finds sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.” The judge announced. “Bail will be granted under strict conditions which is to include electronic monitoring until trial. Do you understand?”I only fully processed his words when he slammed the gavel down decisively. A wave of relief crashed over me and I nearly collapsed back into my seat. I was so excited I could have hugged the judge but I kept my cool and nodded.“I understand. Thank you, Your Honor.” I said with a respectful bow.“Court is adjourned.” The judge announced with another sharp b

Chapter 7

Larissa's POVHe dug into the pocket of his suit and produced a velvet box. He placed it on the table and slid it toward me.“What’s in there? Something that will help us?”“Yes.”“What is it? A flash drive filled with incriminating evidence?” I asked.“The box is in front of you Larissa. Open it and find out for yourself.”I did as he asked. Inside the box was a simple yet elegant ring, a single diamond set in a delicate bond. I peered at it and then pulled the ring out of the box. I turned it around in my hand. I once owned a flash drive that looked like a lipstick, maybe this was something like that.I turned to Brayden. “How do you open it?”“Open a ring? Are you dense?”“Wait, this is a ring? Like a ring ring?”He groaned. “Are you also blind?”“I am neither of those things.” I snapped at him. I kept the part where I thought the ring doubled as some sort of flash drive to myself, not wanting to endure any more insults from Brayden. “Why are you showing me this? Is it evidence in

Chapter 8

Larissa's POV Eventually, Mr. Carter pulled up to the front of the house. “Get in,” he instructed. “I'll take you home.”I got in without a word of protest. “Take me to my parents home, please,” I mumbled. “I'll tell you the address.”“I know the address,” Mr. Carter said, and we drove in silence.“Thanks, Mr. Carter,” I muttered, as soon as we pulled up in front of my parents house.Mr. Carter nodded in response, and I stepped out.I took in a deep slow breath to steady my nerves, and mentally prepare myself to face my parents. I didn't do anything wrong, but I'm sure as hell they'll be disappointed for having birthed such a foolish daughter.Sighing one last time, I made my way to the front porch, and knocked.Just as I was about to knock for the second time, the familiar sound of a vehicle made me stop midway, as I could recognize that car sound even in my sleep.Benjamin.I turned around, to see Benjamin and Londyn stepping out.Rage like I've never known coursed through my vein

Chapter 9

Larissa's POV “What?!” My parents exclaimed.“What are you talking about Larissa?” My father demanded. “Tell them Benjamin,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper as I quickly wiped away stray tears with the back of my hand. “Tell them how you made me admit into killing Lara, when you're the–”“I think staying locked up must have messed with Larissa's memories,” Benjamin said, his face void of any form of emotion. “Larissa herself admitted in front of everyone and the press that she killed Lara–”“That's a lie and you know it!” I yelled, and that single word broke the damn, as my tears fell uncontrollably. “Tell them the truth Benjamin!” I lunged at him, continuously hitting him as tears flowed endlessly down my cheeks. “Tell them how you killed Lara and–”Pow! Londyn pulled me forcefully away from Benjamin and slapped me hard across the face.“That's enough Larissa!” She yelled. “How can you stand here and accuse Benjamin of something you did?!” She fumed. “Benjamin has been noth

Chapter 11

Larissa's POV ‘Fine’. I’ll do it. My text read. I had barely set my phone down on the table when it buzzed with a reply from Brayden.‘My driver will pick you up at 7 am sharp. Be ready’. His text read.No pleasantries. No acknowledgment of the life-changing decision I’d just made. Typical Brayden.I laid down in bed for a while – hours probably – before getting the strength to go get up and head into the bathroom. In the two days that I’d spent sobbing my eyes out in my apartment, I’d neglected all forms of personal hygiene. I stunk to high heaven and I needed a shower as soon as possible.I looked at my image in the mirror. I looked terrible. My eyes were red and swollen from the time I spent crying. My hair was tangled, greasy and limp; combing out all the knots was going to hurt a lot.I looked like shit and I felt – and probably smelt – like it too. A sighed and headed stepped into the shower. I turned on the shower, brushing my teeth as I let the bathroom fill with steam before
