A Good Dad

Focusing on her goals was the only thing Angelina could do. It was what kept her going. She was going to win Miss Americana. She was going to become a neurologist. She would step away from the limelight and finally be able to make real friends and have the sort of life that she wanted. Her relationship with Eddie wasn’t real anyway. As long as she fulfilled her end of the bargain by giving birth to this child and helping him raise it at least partially, she was allowed to do whatever she wanted. He took such good care of her for two reasons as far as she could tell. The first being that he desperately wanted this child to be born because he didn’t have any family and that couldn’t happen if she wasn’t doing well. At this point, Angelina wasn’t even sure whether she wanted to win or not. She would have to leave her sweet baby for the better part of a year but it would also give her a ton of scholarship money. Using money she had earned for herself on her education instead of relying on Eddie was tempting. In addition to that, winning would postpone the wedding another year. If she lost…she would have to marry Eddie immediately as stipulated in the contract.State titleholders were only allowed to compete in the Miss Americana pageant once even though they were allowed to compete in the lower pageants down the chain multiple times. This was her only shot to be able to beat her mother.Somehow, the thought wasn’t as satisfying as it once was. She had no idea what she actually wanted.Angelina was in her third year of online school. Forgotten

Three days passed. The man seemed to work a day job so Angelina was left alone with her thoughts for about nine hours at a time.He let her out to use the bathroom first thing in the morning, as soon as he got home, and right before bed. She couldn’t exactly escape because he held a knife to her throat all the way there and back and the bathroom window was too tiny to squeeze through even if it did open.He fed her foods like mashed potatoes, Jell-O, broth or cream-based soups, and yogurt that were supposedly good for sore throats and provided cough drops too. He really did seem to only want her for her singing voice and nothing else.At least most of her basic physical needs were being met. She had to try and wash all of her makeup off with nothing but soap and water, which was difficult, but was fairly sure she got everything. Her hair was stiff with hairspray since he didn’t allow her to shower but that was a minor inconvenience. The bigger problems were her contacts and her lack o

In Terms Of Soap Operas

At the two-week mark, Angelina had given up all hope of being rescued. She spent every second she wasn’t singing completely numb. The man—she still didn’t know his name because he lived alone and never bothered to introduce himself—came home with a furious expression at the end of his workday and shoved his phone in her face. “What is this? Why are your personal social media accounts being updated still when you’re here? Are you a fake?”She squinted at the screen. What on earth? She hadn’t taken either of those pictures. They appeared to be at volunteer events that were on her schedule that she hadn’t been able to make it to because she was stuck here. Her life as Miss California was low on the list of her priorities right now but she had wondered what they were doing in her absence more than once. Was some crazy doppelgänger posing as her taking advantage of the fact that she was missing or did Eddie find a substitute?Did that mean he was looking for her after all? But if it was a

She's Alive, I Know She Is

Lily didn’t have any duties pertaining to her contract on Thursday so she spent the day focused entirely on homework, though she did take a break to play Mario Kart with her siblings for a while. The hacker believes the kidnapper is a part of the media though based on his camera bag. He’s trying to focus on the people who were there covering the fundraiser but it’s possible this guy is an amateur paparazzi with a regular job who happened to be there as well’That didn’t narrow down the suspects at all! She hoped the hacker was able to find better information on everyone that had been at that event soon.===On Friday night, Lily had to go to a cocktail party organized by some of the pageant sponsors. Mark would accompany her as her escort and make sure she didn’t talk to any one person

You Won't Change My Mind

“Lily, you really can’t do this. Whatever happened with your twin is not your responsibility. You still have your entire life ahead of you. Don’t throw it away on the off-chance this works,” Mark said with a pained expression.Lily was surprised to hear that coming from him. Here she thought he would do anything to help his boss.“You won’t change my mind,” she sniffed before turning to Eddie. “Are you going to help me or not? Because I’ll do this by myself if necessary and find someone else to send the tracking signals to.”He could see she wasn’t going to back down from this and acquiesced reluctantly. “Fine. But you’re getting trackers put all over you so there isn’t a chance of us missing your signal. I’m sure the guy I hired knows where to get some if he doesn’t own any already but it might take a day or two to get a hold of them.“Until then, you’re not allowed to leave Mark’s side. Got it? I won’t put you at more risk than absolutely necessary. And I’m coming with you to all of

Things She Wanted To Ask Her Twin

Out of all the public appearances Lily had been forced to make as Miss California, she hated this one the most. All she could see were fake smiles and people making insignificant small talk with each other. She had always loathed small talk. She would rather talk about anything in the world but the weather or other mundane day-to-day topics. Was this what the majority of Angel’s life was like? Was she a chameleon too? Lily wanted to meet her and hoped they would be able to get along but she couldn’t fathom this lifestyle at all.Eddie could be seen across the room looking exhausted but somewhat put together chatting with people. He didn’t seem all that happy to be here but was doing his job as promised. If she had to guess, he was used to this sort of thing but didn’t necessarily like it. Maybe Angel was the same way. Lily had a hard time imagining anyone could actually enjoy this sort of stuffy environment. What a way to spend a Friday night! Normally, her Fridays were spent doing so

Of Course I'm The Real One!

Angelina was fairly certain she was hanging on to what remained of her sanity by a thread. She had sung the entirety of several musicals by now using the books her captor brought her and still didn’t have the slightest hope of being rescued. She had four seizures without her medication, couldn’t see properly so she had a constant headache, and still hadn’t been able to shower. She did her best to clean herself with the soap and water available in the sink of the half bath she was allowed to use but it was sort of a moot point without a change of clothes.Since being shown those pictures from her social media accounts, she had been torturing herself wondering what on earth was going on and whether or not Eddie even noticed she was gone. Maybe he really didn’t care and had decided the imposter was a better mother for Aria because she was willing to stay at home with her instead of wanting her own life. The thought threatened to destroy her because she knew she wasn’t a good mom. A Fifty-Fifty Chance

There was a severed head in a jar on the nightstand next to the bed. It had an oddly tranquil expression considering Angelina’s captor had likely murdered whoever it belonged to.Whatever solution the head was in kept it very well preserved. There wasn’t the slightest sign of decomposition. The head belonged to a very beautiful woman with light hair but it was possible that all of the color had been leached out of it, like it had with her eyes. Those eyes stared straight into Angelina’s soul. She began silently hyperventilating as she tried not to scream because she was certain a single scream would result in getting her killed that much quicker.“See that?” the man demanded as he shook her roughly in the chokehold. “That was the last person who lied to me. If you don’t want to end up in a jar next to her, tell me the truth right now. Who is that woman in the picture?”“I don’t know,” she whispered. If she tried mustering the tiniest bit of volume, she would either burst into tears or

I Look Ridiculous

Mark was in a bad mood the entire time he escorted Lily to that cocktail party. He knew exactly why too. Her words in the car earlier hit him right where it hurt. One of the people he admired most in this world—the one who had given him motivation to chase his dream after all hope was lost—thought he was spineless. Even worse was that she wasn’t completely wrong. The main thing he cared about was not living in poverty ever again and he couldn’t exactly tell her that when she asked. Just about everything else fell under that umbrella. Her accusation about feeling guilty if anything happened to her was true but not only because he had been the one to drag her into this. Mark cared about what happened to her because she was one of the rare people he genuinely liked.Lily was perhaps the most fascinating person he had ever met. Bright, quirky, passionate, and brave. Everything he wasn’t.She didn’t let anything stop her and hadn’t for as long as he had known her. His seventeen-year-old se
