ALEKSEI I crossed the threshold, ambling to her side as she stared at herself in the mirror. It was like the outside world or her immediate surroundings ceased to exist to her. A better man would have let her slowly come to terms with things on her own, but I wasn't a better man. Hell, I wasn't even remotely a good man. I wanted to pick and prod at her brain, know what made her tick, from her fears to what made her gift the world with her rare genuine smiles. Everything. I slid behind her, my hand falling on her hip to get her attention. "Ariana." Her clouded gaze met mine in the mirror. She was staring at me, but at the same time, it was as though she was staring right through me. The emptiness in her eyes unsettled me. It was a scary look on her, one I hated with my entire being. It brought unsavory memories from my childhood; memories I kept buried in the recess of my mind. That explained why the emptiness in her eyes had stirred

ARIANA I WOKE UP ON cloud nine the next morning. I could still speak, and the rope showed no signs of returning. I stood in front of the mirror this morning in disbelief, patting my face to make sure I wasn't living in a false reality I made up in my head. I smiled. God, I couldn't wait to get home and surprise everyone with the news. Mom, Matteo, Enzo, Drea, everyone! "Did you and Aleksei finally get it over with?" Mikhail asked, dryly, guzzling down a shot of vodka. It was just seven in the morning, and he was already drinking. I pointed it out to him when he first joined me earlier, and he'd merely shrugged it off. I didn't have to dig deep to know where he got his devil-may-care attitude from. His brother possessed it in spades; case in point, ignoring those people at dinner yesterday when they talked shit about his family. As expected, Aleksei was long gone when I woke up this morning. His side of the bed was cold, and the room showed no signs of him being there in

ARIANA "THEY'RE HERE!" I shoved my feet into my fur slippers as quickly as I could, turning to face Maebeth. "I can't wait to surprise them." Her eyes crinkled as she smiled at me. "I'm sure they'll be just as ecstatic as everyone else who has heard the news. Drea's reaction was rather passionate." And by that she meant Drea screaming her lungs out for three minutes straight like she was possessed. I had to pull the phone away from my ear to protect my ears, and even then, I could still hear her. She was that loud. I laughed, linking my arm through hers, and leading her into the hall. "I didn't know you paid attention to us while we rambled." Her smile only broadened. "Of course, I did. It gladdens my heart to see you happy. Plus, you and Aleksei are getting along now." Speaking of... "Where's Aleksei and Mikhail? I haven't seen them since we arrived." "Mikhail left on his bike an hour ago. As for Aleksei, he should be here somewhere. He hasn't left the... speak of the devil.

ARIANA "I didn't know I needed this. Thank you for inviting us." Mama pressed a kiss on each of my cheeks, her lips spread out in a wide smile that reached her eyes. I smiled back at her. I couldn't remember the last time she smiled so widely since Papa's betrayal came to light and my marriage to Aleksei. It was a nice change. One I wished was permanent as I gazed up at her. "Don't thank me, Mama. I missed you guys, too. Of course, I wanted to have dinner with all of you." She nodded, brushing a strand of hair away from my face. "It brought back memories." Her once bright smile dimmed as sadness slipped into her eyes. Oh, hell no. Her thoughts had slipped to the asshole who put a ring on her finger and smiles on her face while he tormented another family. His brother's family. I knew I needed to steer her attention fast before she burst into tears in Aleksei's foyer. "Did you cut your hair?" I ran my fingers through the dark strands. It was shorter now, the blunt edges just reac

ARIANA I watched as Ma, Matteo, and Giselle trickled out of the house one by one after saying their final goodbyes, leaving Nicholas and Orion behind. The latter was looking around the foyer like he was searching for something while Nicholas' knowing silver eyes honed in on my body language. "Hm," was all he said, but the word held so much weight behind it, it unnerved me. "What is he looking for?" I asked, directing his attention to his son glued to his long legs. His brows furrowed. "The dog. He wants the Samoyed." I laughed. "You're rich enough to get him one, aren't you? Buy him one." He shook his head like I didn't understand him. "As if it could ever be about the money. I don't like dogs. Big ones, especially." "Oh. You can get him a smaller breed. A Pomeranian, maybe? They're cute and tiny." "I'll think about it," he reluctantly conceded. I crouched in front of the three-year-old, smiling widely at him. "In the meantime, you can come over anytime you want. I'm sure Mi

ALEKSEI A KNOCK ON MY DOOR dragged my attention from the business call I was on. My fingers hovered over the chess pieces I toyed with as I spoke to a business associate on the other end of the line. I checked the time on the digital clock on the wall above the fireplace. 10:35 P.M. What the fuck did Mikhail want by this time of the night? Knowing him, I could bet it was something stupid as fuck. I gently rose to my feet so I didn't topple over the glass chessboard, padding across the room to open the door slightly. I was prepared to glare at him and slam the door in his face, but I paused with my hand curled around the knob, shock making my entire body freeze. It wasn't my little brother knocking on my door as I'd expected. It was Ariana. It would've been less surprising if it was Mikhail even though we lived in different wings of the house as opposed to Ariana whose room was on the same floor as mine---a few doors away, to be exact, but I didn't in a million years think tha

ALEKSEI It didn't end there. Sometimes, she'd make me steal some of his worn clothes that held his cologne, so she could reminisce on the good old days when she still had my father's attention. It was disgusting, but at the same time, it made my stay at her place for the weekend more bearable. If she had something that reminded her of him to pore over, she left me alone, and at the same time, Mikhail could enjoy his weekend peacefully; not that she ever hurt him. There was hell to pay when I stopped bringing her those little things, but I'd gotten big fast and she couldn't hit me anymore. It was one of the few things I was grateful I got from my father - his height and imposing stature. "Can I just say I don't get the hype about your father? I don't think he's worth all that effort. Sending your little son to take pictures of his father like a creep?" Her nose turned up with disgust. "Yeah, he's definitely not worth it," she mumbled to herself. Of course, she'd use this as an op

ARIANA I SAW ONLINE ONCE that sleeping next to a romantic partner reported better sleep than sleeping alone or next to a child, and that information chose to slither into my brain at the crack of dawn. I wasn't confirming or denying this study-Aleksei and I weren't even close to being romantic partners-but maybe these researchers were onto something when they came to that conclusion. Maybe. When I knocked on his door last night, I didn't even plan to sleep in his bed. Did the thought of sleeping in the same bed as him cross my mind when I climbed up the stairs? I was ashamed to admit it to myself, but yes, the thought did linger in the back of my head a little. I was also honest with him last night when I told him I just wanted to hand him the cake. I thought it'd be the nice thing to do after shunning him from my dinner plans last night. He said he'd already eaten, but when I asked the kitchen staff if that was true after my family left, they'd all denied serving dinner to Aleks

ARIANA Thirty minutes later, I'd already learned there was morning sex, goodbye sex, loud sex, hate sex, make-up sex, angry sex, and rough sex. I didn't particularly see the difference between the last two, but Drea and Michael argued they were two different things, and I wasn't about to get into an argument with them over something they were this 'passionate' about. "And for the final one." I blanched at Michael. "There's more?" Drea winked in reply. "We saved the best for last." I sighed knowing they wouldn't rest if we didn't get this out of the way. "Go on." "Slow sex," Michael announced. "It's been coined making love by people and it's serious." Well, color me intrigued. "Serious, how?" "It's usually done between people who are in love; say a husband and a wife. It feels raw and deep, like they're slowly stripping layers of your skin off with each slow thrust as they stare deep into your eyes. People argue there's usually a connection there, you know?" "We're gonna ignor

ALEKSEI ARIANA SLID INTO THE backseat beside me, bathing the enclosed space with her soft vanilla perfume. Her make-up was freshly done and she looked like she'd just walked off a modeling set as opposed to spending several hours at work. A closed partition separated us from the driver's seat. "Nice day at work today?" I asked as a conversation starter as Lev turned on the ignition. She dropped her purse between us, a snort escaping her lips. "Far from it. This is your warning to never take me on an impromptu trip ever again." "It wasn't exactly my fault. You'd passed out and couldn't give consent, and we had a flight to catch." "Really? What happened to just leaving me at home while you go without me?" "Then you wouldn't have met those people irritating enough to make you break your silence." "Trust me, that's the only reason you still have your head attached to your neck." She leaned in conspiratorially, her lips twitching as she fought back a smile. "I know a few people." "
