Chapter 1

The sounds from the next room grew louder and louder. There were the unmistakable sounds of a woman's moans and a man's rhythmic grunts. The noise disturbed the serene, peaceful night. I couldn't knock on the door to stop them, though. After all, it was my mother-in-law and her new boyfriend causing the commotion. My name is Jenna Cross. My husband, Chester Dalton, and I had only gotten married three years ago. Since then, we'd lived with Chester's mother, Frida Sherman. While I didn't exactly have a good relationship with Frida, my busy work schedule had helped keep our interactions minimal. I always thought of it as a blessing in disguise. That continued until recently when Frida found herself a boyfriend, Bryson Ewing, and brought him home. Her son was already married, and she herself had been widowed for years. Considering her age, one would expect her new boyfriend to be someone of a similar standing. Yet, she defied expectations by dating a man ten years younger than her.

Chapter 2

After that night, I stopped leaving my bedroom altogether in the evenings. But since we were all living under the same roof, I couldn't avoid Frida and Bryson entirely. To make things worse, the couple just couldn't seem to keep their hands off each other. Sometimes, they didn't even bother going to their room and instead made out shamelessly on the living room couch. One evening, after I was done showering, I stepped out of the bathroom and was immediately met with the unmistakable sounds of lips and tongues smacking against each other. And there they were, entangled on the couch. Frida's blouse had slipped almost entirely off, and a large area of her bare skin was exposed. The scene was so explicit that my face burned with embarrassment. Even though I saw them going at it, they didn't stop. If anything, they got even more brazen. As if trying to show off, Bryson grabbed Frida's chest firmly, eliciting a series of breathy gasps from her. I fled back to my room as fast as I

During times of extreme fear, one wouldn't even be able to make a sound. I was so scared that I forgot to scream and instinctively slapped Bryson across the face. "Get out of my room!" I shouted, trembling as I pulled the blanket over my nearly bare body. I glared at him with disgust and hatred. I expected him to panic at being caught or even lash out and try to intimidate me. However, none of that happened. Bryson calmly got off the bed and stood by the bedside. He said apologetically, "Sorry about that. I had a bit too much to drink and got up to use the bathroom. I must've gone into the wrong room by mistake."How could he have entered the wrong room? I locked my door every night! Wait… Did I lock it tonight? After talking to Chester on the phone earlier, I might have forgotten to do that.My mind was a mess. The thought of nearly letting Bryson have his way with me made my body tremble uncontrollably.I clenched my teeth and scolded, "Whether it was intentional or not, y

Chapter 4

Why would my husband have a woman who had just given birth around him? Suspicion filled my heart, and I immediately called my best friend who lived in Arevia. I asked her to check on things for me.Chester often traveled to Arevia for work. That was the city where we had gone to college together. During his trips, he stayed in the apartment my parents had bought for me. My intuition told me that Chester might be cheating. After hanging up the call with my best friend, I followed up with a text to remind her to observe from the shadows. In the message I sent to her, I wrote, "Something feels off about Chester. Don't confront him directly. Just keep an eye out to see if there's any other woman around him." Not long after I sent the message, Frida knocked on my door and walked in. "Jenna, time to drink your milk," she said, handing me a glass. Her expression seemed normal, but something about her presence felt off. It wasn't unusual for her to bring me a glass of milk each ni

Chapter 5

When the police knocked on the door, Frida finally woke up. She opened the door, looking startled as the officers entered. Her face was pale, and she was visibly panicked. "What's the matter?" she asked nervously. "We received a report of an attempted rape in this household. This is a routine response. Is there a Jenna Cross in this household?" one of the officers asked. Frida's face blanched as she glanced back at the master bedroom door that was tightly shut. She waved her hands frantically in denial. "N-No! There's been a misunderstanding. Nothing like that happened here," she stammered. Her deliberate attempt to cover up the situation only drew more suspicion. One of the officers listened carefully and caught the faint sound of my weak cries coming from inside the bedroom. "Jenna! Are you in there, Jenna?" The moment I saw the police, relief washed over me. I couldn't hold on any longer and fainted. …When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. Chester sat
