Chapter Twenty

Brodi trailed a few steps behind her as she made her way to the glass sliders on the deck. Asta was already waiting in the truck for her, motor running. "I'm sorry to have dumped all of this on you at one time, mille…uh, Liv. But I hope you will think about all I've said." Brodi held Kelda's book out towards her. "Kelda would like you to have this. It is very old, a history of our people. We hope it will help."Liv didn't move for several breaths, but finally stepped forward and took the book from Brodi's outstretched hand, careful not to touch him. The book itself tingled in her fingers and she almost dropped it in surprise. The book clutched tightly to her chest, she stepped back."We are here…I am here for whatever you need," Brodi told her, holding his arms out to his sides. Liv bit her lip as she regarded him – like some kind of Viking warrior presenting himself to her as tribute. Her insides quivered, but she refused to submit to this insane pull she felt for him. It's not rea

Chapter Twenty-One

Brodi sat on the ridge above the compound. He couldn't quite see the human camp from here, but he could see a thin plume of smoke coming from that direction. He liked to imagine Liv sitting there, enjoying the fire. His patrols had extended their circuit to include Liv's camp and the outcropping where Asta had fallen into the poacher's trap. So far, everything had been quiet, but it didn't make Brodi any less anxious. He'd promised he'd stay away but in the last 48 hours he had practically worn a hole in the rug in his bedroom from all the pacing he had done. He'd run through the woods for miles hoping to exhaust himself, only coming home when the dawn was breaking, but still, he couldn't relax. Even with updates every four hours from his patrol, his chest still ached, and his wolf was constantly fighting him to go and claim their mate. Brodi knew his family was avoiding him as much as possible as his temper was at its breaking point. They knew why he was acting this way, but they co

Chapter Twenty-Two

Brodi's heart soared as he carried Liv toward her tent. They wouldn't complete the bond tonight. He had too many things to explain to her, but the fact that she felt the depth of the love and sadness that his family had gone through over the centuries, and her willingness to learn about their connection was enough for now. For tonight, he would worship her body and erase the grief she had been experiencing when he had come upon her. "I'm very thankful you have this nice, large tent," Brodi said as he lowered her to her feet in front of the tent's zippered opening. "It will be much more comfortable."Liv glanced at the four-person tent and back at Brodi's massive frame. As much as she was out in the wilderness, she splurged on the larger tent with more amenities even though it was just her. Usually. She was even happier about her decision now."Yes, it's very comfortable." She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, suddenly nervous. Her shoes suddenly became very interesting.Brodi s

Chapter Twenty-Three

As Liv came back to her senses, she breathed in Brodi's intoxicating scent. Her nose played at his neck wanting more. They were face to face and she realized Brodi had her body so tightly tucked into his, not a breath of air could have passed between them. She also realized he was hard as stone against her stomach. "Brodi, what about…" She tried to slip her hand between them to touch his iron length but he caught her hand and raised it to his lips. He brushed a kiss across her knuckles."No, Elksling, not tonight. I want you to understand the bond completely before we go further. If I lose myself in your body, another part of the bond will solidify." He looked down into her confused eyes. "I will not do that yet, as much as I want all of you." "Tell me more then. Tell me what I need to know." Liv settled back into his embrace, placing a tender kiss on his shoulder on the edge of his wolf tattoo.Brodi draped a powerful leg across hers to bring her even closer to him. "No more tonigh

When they drove up to Brodi's home, Liv's eyes went wide, and she worked to stifle a groan. Fifty or sixty people stood on the deck and on the lawn watching them park. "What's going on?" Liv looked to Brodi in a panic.Brodi reached out to stroke her cheek. "They have come to welcome you, love. Don't worry. You don't have to remember everyone and I'll be with you the entire time."Liv took a deep breath and blew it out. She hated crowds, and this one was completely focused on her. "Okay, let's do this."As Brodi led her toward the steps to the deck, Liv heard murmurs of 'Welcome', 'So glad you are here', over and over. She was surprised to recognize a few people from town. Were there other types of shifters she didn't know about? She had to remember to ask Brodi later. When they reached the deck, she was relieved to see people she knew. Kelda, Asta, and Finn waited for her, smiling widely. Kelda took her by the shoulders and kissed both her cheeks. "Welcome, lille ylgr! We are bles

Chapter Twenty-Five

Brand stopped and aimed his long nose up to the sky. Nothing but woodland scents. Good. He veered off his normal patrol path and headed north. He'd lied to his brother about being unable to find the Blackfoot pack. Killian and his group were good, but they didn't know this land like Brand did. This was his forest. His domain. Shortly after his brother had allowed Killian and his pack temporary permission to stay on his land, Brand had made it his mission to get to know the young pack leader. Killian was ambitious and hanging on to his Alpha status by a thread since he'd gotten run off his land by the bear shifters. Brand had won his confidence over the months and had convinced him there was plenty of land to share in the Sköll territory. If Killian would partner with Brand to become the next Alpha of the Sköll pack, he would section off a large territory for Killian to call his own as one of his first declarations as Alpha. His second declaration would be to give his sister, Asta, to

Chapter Twenty-Six

When Brodi saw Liv descending the stairs, his mouth went dry and he had to lock his knees to keep from falling to the floor. Always beautiful to him even in her favored cargo pants and t-shirts, now she was a vision. Ursula had tamed her flaming red hair with intricate braids studded with gold bands and crystal beads the color of rainbows. They had dressed her in a flowing, green gown with traditional Nordic embroidery on the chest and hem. If she had been transported back to his ancient Northman village, she wouldn't have been out of place. Though she would be the most striking woman there. Liv felt a little like she was playing dress up for Halloween, but the dress and the way Ursula had done her hair were really works of art. "Do you like it?" Liv looked down at herself and back up to Brodi as she came to the bottom of the stairs. For a moment, Brodi's mouth simply opened and closed like a fish. Finally, he gathered his wits to speak. "Fantastisk. You take my breath away, my lov

Over the next week, Asta turned Liv into a personal project. She drew Liv into their daily lives and soon she felt like she had known them all her life. She especially enjoyed being drawn into the circle of women that made up the pack. Liv was impressed with all of them. They all had strong opinions and all seemed to have some sort of battle experience – shield maidens, Asta had called them. They continued the practice with their weapons even though it had been hundreds of years since they'd had to participate in a real battle. They dissolved in peals of laughter watching Liv try to master the ax and bow, but Liv didn't mind. "Why do you continue to do all this anyway?" Liv asked, after yet another failed attempt to hit the target with her throwing ax."Who knows what may happen?" a tall, black-haired beauty named Brigit told her. "We must be able to help protect our pack and our Alpha. Strength in body and mind is necessary. Many packs do not work like this, of course, but we are no

Liv walked toward the pool and Brodi's outstretched hand as if in a trance. She sucked in a breath when her foot dipped into the water onto the first step carved into the rock. It was hotter than she expected, but not uncomfortably so. Holding tightly to the hand she was given, she descended into the water up to her chest. Brodi wrapped an arm around her and towed her off the steps. She could still stand, but she let him hold her with her feet off the ground. Brodi leaned down to her and brushed his mouth against hers so softly, she thought she might have imagined the caress. Her hands wrapped around his nape and pulled herself toward him, burying her nose in his neck. She loved the way he smelled – all pine and sky mixed with something dark and musky that her body craved. His hands traveled up and down her back, along her sides, and down to cup her ass in his hands. Every cell in her body tingled and she forgot all about being embarrassed to be naked in front of him. "Lean back, E

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Gunnar slouched comfortably in an Adirondack chair on his porch mapping out the constellations in the sparkling stars above his head. This was one of his favorite times of day. He enjoyed his solitude, unlike most of his pack who preferred to be in the company of others. He knew most of his family didn't really understand him, but that was okay. He was content with himself and his role in the pack. As he sipped his beer, a sound caught his ear - a barely perceptible crunch of the leaves in the woods to the right of his cabin. His eyes moved to study the dark woods when he heard the sound again. He fought the urge to turn his head toward the noise. He didn't want to give away the fact that he had heard whoever or whatever was creeping around his cabin, but he rested his right hand on the shotgun next to him. He kept it close when he was outside near the cabin to dissuade stubborn bears against roaming in his territory. He caught the movement again in his peripheral vision. There it wa
