CHAPTER 21

Clarence’s POV. What is all this all about? — I couldn't help but ponder. His fiance kept making a scene but I couldn't say a word since I was the one in need here. My meeting with Julian was important but she came around, making it seem like it was nothing as she went about blabbing nonstop about his achievement and how he was the best finacé. Not going to lie, I lost my temper seeing her prying like that non-stop, a gnawing feeling stuffing my chest when she kept talking about Julian being her fiance. My heart literally shredded into a million pieces but there was nothing I could do. Shutting my eyes tightly, I tilted my head to the side as I held my glass of water. All through her blabbing, I hoped that Julian sent her away so we would have a concise conversation but he did nothing of that sort. Though, he tried to step in several times but if only he was persistent and rigid enough, his efforts would have gone through. Now left alone to myself, I was swirling the c

CHAPTER 22

Clarence’s POV. It was just a regular morning and I was back in London. I had no plans beyond scrubbing the kitchen tiles and maybe rearranging the clutter on the bookshelf that had started to annoy me out of being bored and at the same time jobless. Cleaning helped me think, helped me feel like I had some control. I had tied my hair up in a bun, rolled up the sleeves of my oversized shirt, and was halfway through wiping down the counter when the doorbell rang. I froze. I wasn’t expecting anyone. Not a friend, not a delivery. My day had been planned out in silence. A knock or a bell always stirred something in me—some leftover instinct from a time when unexpected visitors meant bad news. I wiped my hands on a nearby cloth and walked to the door, cautiously peeking through the peephole. A delivery man stood there, holding a medium-sized box. He had a neutral expression and no hint of trouble in his posture at all. I opened the door slowly, peeping out. I looked around briefly before

CHAPTER 23

Damon’s POV. For a second, I thought I was hallucinating. Maybe the lights were playing tricks on my eyes, or maybe the champagne was stronger than I realized. But no. She was really there. Clarence. Standing. On her own two feet looking more dazzling than ever, more like her older self before the surgery. She was clapping with a smile on her face. Dressed like she owned the room. And then she began walking slowly and confidently towards us. I felt something inside me shift. My throat dried up, my legs weakened beneath me. I almost stumbled backward, and if it weren’t for Gina’s hand grabbing my arm, causing me to regain my composure and try to act steady, I would’ve lost my balance. She was speaking to me, but I couldn’t hear a word she said. My eyes were fixed on Clarence. My mind was frozen in total disbelief. She wasn’t supposed to walk again, no. She was supposed to roll in here on her wheelchair or better still, not show up at all to avoid being seen in her situation. “How

CHAPTER 24

Gina’s POV. I watched Clarence’s car disappear into the night, her composure and graceful figure still in my mind. It was as if the ground beneath me had shifted. I couldn’t speak at all while she was here. I just stood there, holding the stupid bouquet she gave me, feeling like it was heavier than it should be. Then I whispered, more to myself than to anyone else, “I don’t know why… but I feel like things are going to go wrong from here.” Damon gave me a confused look. “What do you mean?” “She’s back on her feet,” I said quietly. “Clarence is walking. That means she’s going to go back to who she used to be before she lost them. And we know her. She was never the kind to sit quietly and let life pass her by. She was bold. She didn’t give up on things. She got whatever she wanted.” My mother scoffed at my words and crossed her arms. “Oh, please, Gina. Don’t start shaking over nothing. Just because she walked in here like some miracle just happened doesn’t mean she’s suddenl

CHAPTER 25

Damon’s POV. I ended the call and looked around, expecting to see Gina waiting where I’d left her. But she wasn’t there. The spot was empty as if she’d vanished in the few minutes I was on the phone. “Gina?” I called, glancing around the garden entrance but I was met with nothing. I went back inside the hall, pushing through the crowd gently, trying not to draw attention. The music was still on, people were laughing, eating, drinking. Some even asked if I needed anything, but I just smiled and waved them off. “Have you seen Gina?” I asked one of the ushers by the aisle. She shook her head. “No, sir. I haven’t seen her return.” This raised some questioning thoughts in my mind. Had she left the venue because she still couldn't face anyone or was she hiding somewhere trying to get over the embarrassment? I kept moving through the hall, scanning every corner. I checked the restroom entrances, the balcony, and even the lounge beside the buffet table, but she wasn’t anywhere. I wa

CHAPTER 26

Clarence’s POV. By the time I walked into my apartment, my whole body felt drained. It wasn’t the kind of tiredness that sleep could fix. It was the kind that settled deep in your bones and reminded you of everything you’d been through just to survive the day. I dropped my purse by the door, kicked off my shoes, and walked straight to the kitchen. My throat felt dry like I hadn’t spoken or swallowed for hours, though I had smiled and spoken more today than I had in months. I poured myself a glass of water and leaned on the counter as I drank it, slowly, like that small act might calm the storm inside me. How had I done that? How had I stood in front of them today—on my own two feet, no less—looked them in the eyes and smiled? I had spoken to Gina like she was my sister, even after everything she did. I had faced Damon without blinking. And then Clara… I still couldn’t believe I had spoken to her like that. There was a time when even the mention of her name made me feel small. But

CHAPTER 27

Julian’s POV. The drive back to my apartment felt longer than usual. Maybe it was because of the weight of the conversation I just had with Clarence that was pressing down on me. Or maybe it was the mess I had created inside my own head. She wasn't aware of how I got the loan, what I had to do, going against my morals and my standards and it was best she never found out. I didn't know why I went to such lengths just to get the loan for her even incurring huge interest I had in mind to clear for her but I found myself agreeing as long as it would be given to her since she had no collateral. I tried to convince myself that it was just business, that I would end up benefitting by being one of the partners of her company, acting very cold to her but I knew better and wasn't ready to admit why I kept coming to her aid. That there was nothing more to it why I couldn't resist helping her. The way Clarence had looked at me—how her eyes had softened when I signed those papers—added to how I

CHAPTER 28

Clarence's POV “THREE MONTHS LATER.” "My dreams finally came true." Standing behind the floor to ceiling window in my office, a bright smile spread across my lips. I was already at the verge of giving up but Julian showed up, giving me a second chance to prove myself. With the money he loaned me, I was able to buy out an abandoned company, and made repairs and renovations to save myself the cost and stress of starting from scratch. I was able to finish everything in two months, got everything I needed, hired some staff to begin with and today I would be hiring more. Wiping the lone tear that rolled down my eyes, I pulled my chair out and then gently lowered myself on it. Staring at my name plaque on the table, a low chuckle rippled from my throat but it was short-lived. Since I was little, I had always fantasized about running a clothing company with departmental stores to sell them like my mother did but my family's main business aside my mother’s was nothing of that sort.

CHAPTER 29

Julian's POV. Kristiana had asked to work with Clarence. No matter the angle I looked at it from, I just couldn't wrap my head around it. Three months back when she first raised it, I had asked her to submit a proposal which she did but it wasn't okay and I disapproved of saving myself from losing money. She just wanted me to invest just as I did with Clarence not even aware of how I was able to get the loan for her and If she ever found out, she would go crazy. Nothing would stop her from suspecting there was something going on between me and Clarence. She tried to make me give her a loan but I refused and she finally agreed she would no longer do business saying she had lost interest. She went back to her life and lived as she used to for the last three months until recently she came to me saying she found out Clarence’s company was hiring staff and wanted to apply. Reclining against my chair, I tossed the iPad I was scrolling through on the table as a little sigh escaped fro

CHAPTER 30

Clarence's POV. Everything was going in line with my plan I couldn't help but be happy. My company is finally going to be launched and with the help of my staff after one month of starting it, I am going to create a remarkable event to celebrate. This morning when I arrived at my office, Olivia, my secretary was placing a pile of documents on the table. Hurrying to her side, I asked, “What's that?” "You're here.” She said, stepping backward with her hands folded in front of her while I examined the documents. "The meeting will start in half an hour, I will remind you five minutes before the commencement.” She said, eliciting a nod from me. Engrossed in reviewing the statistics I had requested, I totally forgot about the meeting but thanks to Olivia, I arrived at the boardroom just in time. Lowering myself at the head of the table after exchanging greetings with the directors who had helped make the business possible, I allowed my eyes to roam around for a while. Just the
