Chapter 11

Days passed and Valerie was still struck by her meeting with Jane. She had contemplated contacting her several times, following Juan's suggestion to find out what really had happened all those years but she fought against the urge.Maybe she would reach out to her eventually, but now was not the right time to do any of that. She picked up the files Juan had delivered to her early that day to have a look. She hasn't been feeling much of herself lately and that was not good enough. The document had every single detail about Carlos and his dealings outside of the office. Just as she had predicted, Carlos was yet to give up his gambling habit and for her, that was a good thing. A smile lined her lips as she studied the papers, pleased with Juan's work. Then, she saw it, the one way she could work her way into Carlos' life for the most of her plan. ELITE NIGHTCLUB. Carlos was a regular at this particular nightclub. And according to Juan's report, he never missed a weekend there. Today co

Chapter 12

Carlos' weight weighed heavily on Ivy as they staggered out of the club. “Is someone coming to get you?” Ivy asked as she struggled to keep him from falling to the ground. “No.” He managed to respond and proceeded to speak inaudible words that made her cringe, she merely held herself from punching a hole in his face- that would not only get him to shut up but it would knock him out for sure and that would be worse because an unconscious Carlos would be way harder to move.“Your car keys,” she said, letting him sit on the ground, resting his back on the fire hydrant while she caught her breath. “where is it?” She pushed her hair away from her face, both arms resting on her waist.Carlos was too stoned to give her a direct response and this irritated her greatly. Her fingers folded into a fist as she took in deep breaths, glaring down at him with furious eyes.“If you knew you couldn't handle it, you should have stopped drinking when you were down to your first bottle.” she muttered, h

Chapter 13

Seeing Carlos sleep peacefully in the back seat of her car pissed Ivy off immensely. “A bastard like you does not deserve such luxury.” She muttered, her voice laced with contempt. Her gaze shifted to the bottle of water in the cup holder compartment of her car and for a moment, she contemplated drowning him with it but on second thought, that would do nothing but ruin the seat of her car.Ivy nudged him gently and once he was half awake, she pulled him up and helped him into the house. Carlos fell to the couch, muttering inaudible words as he took off his shirt and shoes before falling unconscious again- this wasn't a new sight to her. In the few years they had been married, she had always had to clean up after him whenever he returned from his galavanting, reeking of alcohol. This time, she wasn't that same old Valerie who wouldn't mind such a chore. It also was no surprise to her that Carlos took the effort to change the decor of the house. From the couch to the paint, even the

Chapter 14

“Good morning Ivy” Eman said, joining Ivy in the coffee room. Ivy glanced up, her gaze brief. “Good morning Eman.” She turned back to her coffee, but Eman's presence lingered. He grabs a cup from the tray and rests his weight on the ceramic counter in front of them. Their daily encounters had become so predictable, almost like he has got surveillance on her to always know the exact time she would be going for her coffee. And for what it's worth, it unsettled her. Eman always made it a point to start a conversation out of nothing when all she wanted was some peace and quiet before getting on with the rest of her day. Ivy had tried countless times to show disinterest in his small talks but for some strange reason, he never seemed to get it. “Ivy, it’s been a month since you started working here, right?” He asked, his tone friendly but intrusive. Ivy nodded. “How are you finding the job?” he persisted. Ivy's hands paused, coffee cup mid-air, as Eman's question hung in the air. She
