Emma walked out of her restaurant, the cool evening air blowing softly on her as she made her way to her car. She had agreed to meet Maya at a coffee shop down the street, but her mind was still reeling from the phone call. As she unlocked her car and slid into the driver's seat, Emma could not shake off the feeling of unease. It was the voice in the background, the one that had sent a shiver down her spine. She was certain she had heard it before, but where? Emma started the engine and pulled out of the parking lot, her eyes scanning the road as she drove. She tried to focus on the task at hand which meeting Maya and finding out what was going on, but her mind kept wandering back to the voice. It sounded so familiar, yet she could not quite place it. Emma's eyes narrowed as she followed Maya's car. Something did not feel right. As she turned a corner, she noticed a black SUV pulling up alongside Maya's car. The driver's eyes locked onto Maya's, a cold, calculating glint in his eye. Emma's heart skipped a beat. She knew that look, knew what it meant. Without hesitation, Emma floored it, speeding up to pull alongside Maya's car. She honked her horn, waving her arms wildly to get Maya's attention. Emma walked through the front door, her mind still reeling from the events of the day. She wanted to reach out to Maya, to make sure she was okay, but something held her back. As she entered the living room, Adriel looked up from his book, concern etched on his face. "Hey babe, everything alright? You look a bit shaken." Emma forced a smile, not wanting to worry him. "I am fine, just a long day." Adriel raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "You sure? You can tell me if something is wrong." Emma hesitated, tempted to confide in him. But she knew he wouldn't be happy if he found out what she was doing - putting herself in harm's way to protect Maya. So she lied, trying to sound convincing. "Really, I am fine. I'm just tired." Adriel nodded, though his eyes lingered on her face, searching for any sign of deception. Emma felt a pang of guilt, but pushed it aside. She could not let him worry about her, not now. He had more than enough to handle, not this. She walked over to the kitchen, tryi

Chapter 73

In one gulp, Maya drank everything. Evelyn kept watching her from the corner of her eyes. Dabbing the edge of her mouth to clean off some lemonade on her lips, she said, “I drank it already and nothing happened. I wouldn't poison myself or anyone.” “Hmph!” Evelyn humped, watching Maya intently. She still did not believe Maya would not do anything if she had the opportunity. Just as Maya had drank her own glass, Emma accidentally knocked over her own glass, spilling lemonade all over the table and Maya's hand. "Oh no, I am so clumsy!" Emma exclaimed, as she quickly grabbed a napkin to clean up the mess. Maya's eyes widened in frustration, her plan foiled once again. She could not believe her bad luck. Evelyn, still suspicious, eyed Maya's glass warily. "You know, I think I'll pass on the drink. I am not really thirsty anyway." Maya's face fell, her anger and disappointment barely contained. She knew she could not try again, not now that Evelyn was even more suspicious. "It's oka

Evelyn turned to leave, her movements abrupt. Adriel called out a goodbye, but Evelyn just waved over her shoulder. As the door closed behind her, Adriel turned to Emma. "What's going on with Evelyn? She seemed really worked up." Emma shrugged, her eyes still fixed on the necklace. "I don't know. She's just been really scared about something lately.” Adriel raised an eyebrow. "Scared? That's not like Evelyn." Emma shrugged again, her expression betraying her inner thoughts. "I don't know, Adriel. Maybe she is just stressed or something." Adriel nodded and continued to his room but Emma rushed behind him and held on to his chair, wheeling him forward. “It's been a while since you did this.” He mumbled to her. “You always complain that I don't need to wheel you around and that it is electric, so…” “But you know I want you to do this for me sometimes.” He chuckled, patting her hand on his shoulder. “So how is the case with Darwin? I know he is still in the police custody.” She as
