Chapter 61

Jack monopolized their dinner with small talk that made Demetria want to vomit. She wouldn't lie and say the food was terrible, because it wasn't, but knowing who prepared it was enough to churn her stomach. She had no idea what he had planned to get his pendant back. How would he get back to the pack house, light…years away, without bringing her along? At that moment, it was her only source of hope on escaping. Then it hit her."Where is your bird?" she asked, remembering he brought it with him before. It sat perched on his shoulder like a stupid parrot.Jack glanced up from his plate, over the rim of a wine glass, and smiled. "Around. She does my bidding. Her name is Libby," he said, swishing his wine around. "Are you sure you don't want a glass of this? I'm told it's good for the soul."She clamped down on a bite off her fork, and slipped it from her mouth, taking careful bites of her pasta. At least he was feeding her, but she knew he needed her in good shape to take her life.It

"You want me to do what?" Lucas asked.Lucas was one of the pack's warriors. He enjoyed bow hunting in his free time, and that sounded just like what Kerry needed to kill the lyrebird.Kerry tapped his fingertips against an oak tree where Lucas stood before his run. "I want you to kill that lyrebird. He's been following me around and I think he's following me."Lucas narrowed his eyes to slits, and cracked his neck. Kerry became impatient as he stretched and jogged in place. "I don't know, Kerry. I'm not for killing animals for no reason. I mean, that bird isn't even native here. I'd hate to kill it.""The bird belongs to the warlock that has my mate, Lucas. He's flying around and keeping an eye on me. Not to mention, he's mocking me. I need you to kill it."He sighed, and scratched the back of his neck. "I…” He sighed, and scratched the back of his neck. "I didn't realize. Sure. Let me grab my bow, and I'll meet you there after my run.""Thank you," Kerry said, watching him jog into

Chapter 63

Demetria hardly slept a wink the night before. That overwhelming feeling of being watched haunted her well into the night. She knew exactly when Jack woke, and began to move around the house because she was awake when morning came.Pulling the covers back, she rubbed her fists against her eyes, and walked over toward the door, finding it unlocked. The smell of coffee and breakfast wafted up the stairs, and actually made her stomach growl.Maybe she should indulge in Jack’s meals, and try to reach out to him. It would make it easier to get away when the time came, if he trusted her. If being the operative word. She backtracked into her room, finding an outfit, jeans and a t-shirt sitting on the edge of her bed. She changed into it, and pulled her hair into a half ponytail before making her way downstairs.Jack stood in the kitchen, wearing more modern clothes than the day before, humming to himself while flipping bacon in a skillet. "You know air fryers make those perfectly," Demetria

Kerry stared at the ceiling of one of the spare bedrooms in the pack house. Maybe they were right, and he didn't need to stay alone in that house. Not that sleep was coming to him either way. Every creak in the house, or an animal in the neighboring woods, sent him into high alert. He couldn't get the feeling that someone watched him-most likely that stupid bird-out of his mind. Did the warlock use the bird to see what was happening? He didn't doubt it. His span of knowing what a witch could do was limited. Until Demetria, he'd never met a witch, not unless you counted the one they pulled from the lycan's kingdom.Kerry shot up in his bed. Cynthia, he thought, was her name. Did anyone know where she came from or where she went after being freed? He shoved from the bedroom, and raced toward the opposite end of the hallway where Alpha Davis slept. He banged on the door, not caring that it was hardly four in the morning. "Hold on," he shouted, and Kerry listened as he neared the door, w

Jack maneuvered his way throughout the building, while Ivory stared at Demetria from head to toe. She matched her glare, daring her to step out of line, not that she could do anything about it since she couldn't use her powers, but she wasn't above swinging on another witch.Ivory made a slow circle around Demetria eyeing her clothes that Jack had put her in that morning, and back up to her unbrushed hair. It seemed Ike's bathroom lacked a hair dryer or straightener."So your mother decided to have two of you," Demetria blurted out.Jack chuckled from across the room, while Ivory stared death glares at her. "Well, since we came at the same time, it was too late to take one of us back," Ivory said.Twins. How nice. The world thought there should be two of them."Now that I look at you two more carefully, I can see the same sinister twinkle in your eye."Ivory walked toward Jack. "I don't like this one. Let's hurry and get this pendant back so you can kill her."Demetria ignored her thr

Jane stopped at the coffee shop to pick up her schedule for the next week, and grab something to drink. Kerry wanted to knock her over the head and tell her to hurry up, but he was sure that would cause a scene. She slurped a mouthful of coffee and sighed. He eyed her. "You know you don't need that coffee."She frowned, shoved, and opened the coffee shop door. "It's a comfort thing. I haven't always known about my wolf, Kerry. Plus, it's autumn and I love a good cup of hot coffee in the chilly weather."Kerry ground his molars together in frustration, and couldn't stop himself from snapping at her. "Are you seriously this nonchalant about your aunt's disappearance?"Jane stopped on the steps of the library and turned around to face him. Alex chuckledbeside them, humorlessly, and shook his head."Seriously Kerry? She's been crying for nights, she's trying to cope, why don't you get off your high horse, and realize everyone is trying to help you, but you're pushing them away."Kerry c

Chapter 67

The streets of the town looked eerie. Abnormal came to mind. Something felt so off about the place, but Demetria couldn't put her finger on it. The air seemed light and iridescent, and the other townspeople never spoke. They looked, but only for a few moments. Maybe they feared Jack or Ivory? Maybe they were under some kind of spell. She didn't know, but it didn't sit right with her. It made her feel as if they'd landed in a different universe. A different realm.Demetria didn't even know if that was possible. She wondered if Jane could figure out they held Jack’s power in their hands with that stupid pendant. Or find someone that could figure it out.His powers were normal-pathetic-without dark magic. If Demetria could find a way to tell them. It most likely wouldn't be easy to destroy it, but they could keep the pendant close, away from his grasp. Ike was normal, but not stupid, in fact, he was smart enough to live for decades. There had to be a way ...Demetria followed Jack and

Chapter 68

Alpha Davis shut the conference room door behind him and walked over to sit across from Kerry. "The wolves caught Cynthia's scent. They're following it, but it seems to go a long way. It looks like she was a long way from home."Kerry nodded, knowing it was good they could still track her, but he hated all the trackers going so far away to find her. Either way, they needed her help. She owed them a favor, and she seemed level headed enough."I found some sand from where the warlock transported her, and I think she can help track the origins. Besides the book, we don't have much else to go on."He nodded. "I'm sure Cynthia can help when we find her. The wolves are touching base every hour. I'll let you know when we get word they've found her." He sat back in his chair, and tapped his fingertips along the table. Kerry knew the alpha well enough to know when something was bothering him. "What is it? Is there something else?"His dark gaze lifted up to meet Kerry's. "My mother used to ge

Chapter 69

Jack and Ivory strolled several feet in front of Demetria out of the village and toward a field full of wildflowers and knee-high weeds. She felt Dom walking-more like stalking-behind her. She tried to focus on his heavy footsteps to calm her growing heartbeat, but tears still pulled at the corners of her eyes. She was tempted to turn and beg him for help, but she didn't know if the evil twins could hear. A breeze blew against her skin, and she inhaled deeply, sending up a prayer that the hellhounds wouldn't tear apart Kerry's pack and kill the only family she had left.Demetria stopped when Jack turned to look at Dom once they made it to the field? "Is this good?"Dom didn't answer but gave him a quick nod. He walked toward a random spot on the ground, bent down, and began pulling things out of his satchel. The growing wild tossed her blond hair around her face, causing goosebumps to form on her skin. The woods around them looked haunted, with billowy trees and a feeling of being wat

Chapter 70

Demetria's eyes locked with Kerry's through the portal, and Kerry felt his restraint snap. He'd never seen her with so much fear on her face. She looked well enough, with no bruises or obvious damage. She was safe enough for the moment. She was alive. But the fear, the absolute dread at the sight of the huge beast jumping through the portal floored him.Her scream lingered even after the portal closed when the last beast made it through to them. Kerry's wolf mourned the distance of Demetria as what looked like a hellhound leaped at him.Kerry rolled onto his back, feeling his sharp teeth press against his shoulder and take out a chunk of his neck. He yelped, doing his best to push the beast from him, with only a little luck.Another hellhound snapped at Alex’s neck nearby, but Jane barreled through and took him out easily. Kerry barred his canines, his rage building with each second that passed, his vision turned red, and he couldn't focus on the fight. His wolf's heart broke into two
