Chapter 61

[Vivienne]“Vivienne!” my brother gasps as soon as he sees me, worry and relief flashing in his dark eyes. He walks up to my bedside, and Rosita immediately rises from her seat.“I need to take a few work calls. I’ll give you two some privacy,” she practically blurts out.I want to argue and ask her to stay, but the flush on her face and her embarrassment makes me stop and shut my mouth. It’s not her usual look, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the two men now in my hospital room.I try to hide a grin as she ducks her head and makes a quick exit. I look back at my brother and then at Elijah.“Let me guess. Marcus told you about this.”“Yeah.” Harvey looks down at my bandaged hand. “Thank fucking God he did, or I’d never have known my baby sister was dealing with this alone. Why the hell didn’t you call me?”“Well, first of all, I didn’t have time to call anyone. And secondly, it’s just a burn. Nothing I can’t handle myself.”Elijah looks down at my face, disappointed w

Chapter 62

[Vivienne]Elijah stands up before I can come out of my speechless moment. He faces Caden, blocking my view of him.“You need to leave, Mr Lawrence. My client—”Caden scoffs, cutting him off. “She’s not your client anymore, Mr Walter. We are already divorced.”“Which, of course, makes me even more determined to look out for her,” he grits out, trying to stay calm, but even I can feel how close he is to losing his temper.Caden takes one step closer. “Why? Because she’s single? Because she’s back to being a free game?”Elijah doesn’t back down, not an inch. He leans in to get right into his face. “Why? Does it bother you? Does it bother you to think about a world in which Vivienne is happy, without you? Does it hurt to think that she’ll soon forget about you? Because she will.”A growl of pure anger rises out of Caden’s throat and his hands tighten into fists by his side. But before the situation gets any worse, I decide to stop it right there.“Stop it!” I snap at them, and the two me

Chapter 63

[Vivienne]I look at him and wonder: did I really marry this man for what’s in his heart, or was I just attracted to his face, like so many women out there?Because honestly, how did I miss it before? How did I miss this…this man that he’s turning out to be these days? It’s like I never really knew him.“You wouldn’t.”He scoffs out a small chuckle, leaning back and crossing his legs. “Wouldn’t I?”He would. I can see it in his eyes. This man is as stubborn and proud as they get. I know this about him. And if he wants something, he would stop at nothing to get it, consequences be damned.“Why? Why are you doing this?”He looks away for a brief moment, as if something outside the window caught his eye, then turns back to face me, looking deep into my eyes.“You know why. You always know why.”And I do, of course I know why, I’ve always known. For Caden, his family is everything. They’re more important than his life itself. Which is why he has always gone to extreme lengths to keep them

Chapter 64

[Caden]The moment I step out of Vivienne’s room, I feel like the whole world has shifted under my feet and everything’s turned upside down.I loosen my tie, hoping to relieve some of the pressure around my neck, but it’s no use. I feel…weird, almost sick to my stomach. But then I come face to face with Elijah Walter and suddenly everything makes sense.“Stay away from her,” he practically growls as soon as he spots me. “This is my first and last warning to you.”I roll my eyes, scoffing. “And what makes you think you have a say in any of it? Who even are you to her?”“I’m a lot more than you could ever hope to be to her. That’s for sure.”The smugness on his face makes me want to punch it right out of him, and it takes every single ounce of self-control not to do something I’m sure I’ll regret later.Instead, I tighten my hands into fists and slide them into my pockets.“More than I could ever hope to be, huh?” I nod, feigning thoughtfulness. “That’s rich, coming from someone like yo

Chapter 65

[Vivienne]It’s like watching a car crash in slow motion—the kind where you know it’s going to end badly, but you just can’t look away. His eyes meet mine, and for a second, I see something there. Guilt, maybe. Or regret. But then it’s gone, replaced by that cold, indifferent mask he always wears when he’s around me.I feel my hands clench into fists at my sides, my nails digging into my palms. I’m not sure if I want to scream, cry, or maybe both. But I won’t give the two of them the satisfaction of knowing that this display of theirs affects me in any way. I won’t break. When I came out of my room, I only wanted to know where they had put my clothes. My phone was in my pants, and without it, I felt kind of helpless.Typically, I would ask Rosita, Elijah, or my brother for help, but they weren’t around. And let’s be honest, I didn’t mind a little walk. I was feeling stiff anyway. But I only take a few steps out of my room when Caden and Sasha fall into my line of sight. I stop dead in

Chapter 66

[Vivienne]I get back to my hospital room without waiting for him to say anything more. What’s even the point? It’s not like I didn’t see this coming.Everything was right in front of me, and yet… yet I thought… I prayed for it to be a lie, a misunderstanding, but it wasn’t.It was all real.He really did betray me, sleeping with his family friend/assistant behind my back. The nerve of that asshole.I take a deep breath and pour a glass of water for myself.Just then, the door opens, and Rosita rushes in.“Sorry, sorry, something came up at work and I was trying to make sure—” she stops, looking at my face carefully, probably not missing the way I’m breaking down right now. “Hey…” she holds my arm and cups my face. “What’s wrong? Is it the pain? And why are you out of bed? You’re supposed to be resting, Viv? What’s going on?”And I tell her what’s going on. I tell her what I saw. And I tell her how everything I did for that man all these years was nothing but a joke to him.“That son

Chapter 67

[Vivienne]We decide to go to the Bahamas to get away from the city and all its drama, even if just for a little while.I feel bad for leaving work like that, especially with the deadline for the next project Harvey and his company are looking forward to, but he insisted I go.“You deserve this,” he told me. “And it’s just for a week. We’ll be fine. And when you come back, we can talk about how things are going to go from here.”“But what about Kim? If she—”He didn’t let me finish. “For now, just focus on yourself. I’ll have someone keep an eye on her so she doesn’t get the chance to cause any more trouble. Go. Have a nice time. And call me if you need anything, okay? I’m always here.”And so, a week later, I’m boarding a plane to a foreign country. As the plane soars through the sky, taking me to a place where I can let go of all my worries, my thoughts return to the person I’m trying to forget—Caden. But maybe this trip down memory lane is necessary—to finally rip him out of my sys

Chapter 68

He was a head taller than her, dressed in black trousers and a button-up midnight blue shirt that had been haphazardly rolled up to his elbows. His black hair was slicked back, but a few stray strands had fallen into his face.He was also wearing glasses with black frames, but even through them, she could see the startlingly dark color of his eyes.He looked like someone who belonged at an art gallery rather than a college house party, but it was that contrast that made him so fascinating to look at.Vivienne glanced at the phone in her hand and cursed under her breath. She’d missed the call, and her brother had sent her a message saying he’d call again soon.Shit, just my luck, she thought, glancing up at the man who was still staring at her.“Um…sorry,” he said to her, his voice deep.He took a step back and spun on his heels until his back was pinned against the mirrored wall of the elevator. They both looked up at the numbers dropping one after the other, and she tried very hard t

Chapter 69

[Vivienne]He glanced down at his hand as if he hadn’t even noticed the blood dripping from it.“It’s nothing,” he muttered, shaking his head like he could just ignore it away.Vivienne wasn’t having any of that. “Nothing? Dude, you just wrecked those guys and broke a fucking mirror. You’re bleeding everywhere. Don’t be an idiot.”He gave her a look that was half amused, half annoyed. “I’ve had worse.”She rolled her eyes. “Oh, what a badass. Do you want a medal, or are you actually going to take care of that?”Without waiting for an answer, she grabbed his arm again, gentler this time, and started pulling him toward the street. He didn’t resist, just followed her like he was too tired to argue. They ended up at a little convenience store, the kind that’s open 24/7 and sells everything from bandages to cheap booze. She shoved him inside, ignoring the weird look the cashier gave them as they headed straight for the first-aid aisle.“Sit,” she ordered, pointing to a bench near the door.

Chapter 70

“Do I know how to drive?” Vivienne echoed, a bit thrown off by the question. “Yeah, of course. Why?”“Because I don’t trust myself behind the wheel right now. And I’ve got a car parked right outside the skyscraper.”Vivienne blinked. “Wait, you want me to drive you back to campus? But… I didn’t even get to enjoy the party,” she frowned at herself. “I mean, it might not look like much, but it took me a good few minutes to look like this,” she pointed at her dress as if to highlight something he might not have noticed before. He glanced at her dress, then back up at her face, his expression unreadable.“Sure. But once you step out in that rain, it’ll probably look like you drowned. Besides,” he glanced down at his watch and nodded. “…in exactly fifteen minutes and five seconds, Harry’s parents will be coming back home. And before you ask—no, he doesn’t know. He was too busy watching p**n with his best friends when they tried to call him.”She blinked again, then looked back at the conven
