chapter 41

I grinned at his begrudging confession.“I appreciate that,” I told him. “That’s awfully mature of you.”“Yeah, well, what can I say? I’m a very mature, amazing person. You’re lucky to have me as your best friend.”I laughed and nodded. “Yes, I am. No arguments there.”Jason grinned. “All right, well, I think my work is done here. I should get back to my loving wife if people will let me near her. Talk later.”“Good luck.”Jason maneuvered his way back into the crowd, and I took a moment to consider everything he’d said. Sam wanted me, but she was scared, that much was clear. I couldn’t let her retreat from what was happening between us because of fear, though. I had to convince her that we were meant to be with each other, despite everything else happening around us.Filled with new determination, I finished my drink and set the glass aside before moving away from the wall. I intended to find her and convince her once and for all that a life together was what we both truly wanted.I

SamanthaI closed my eyes and tilted my head back, sucking in the cool night air. I felt some of the tension leave my shoulders and the pressure leave my head.It was nice and quiet out here. I’d needed to escape the crowd and the noise of the reception for a moment, so I’d gone outside to get some fresh air. Stepping out of the hall, I’d thought I’d just wander the parking lot a bit, but I’d spotted a little garden with a walking path next to the building. At that moment, I stood in the middle of the garden, letting my head clear as I cooled down.I hugged myself, thinking of what Ryan had said to me earlier. I couldn’t decide if I was angry at him or not. He’d blatantly ignored my wish to not talk about us until after the wedding. For that alone, I should be furious. However, I couldn’t quite bring myself to be angry with him. He was fighting for me. For us. I knew he was worried about what was happening between us. At the first sign of trouble, I’d pushed him away. I’d ran, convinc

RyanHaving not found Sam inside the reception hall, I rushed outside, my heart beating so hard that I was afraid it would burst. I was terrified. My mind was racing with terrible thoughts of what might be happening to her. If Bill had found her, I had no idea what he might do. How desperate he might be to hurt me.“Sam!” I called out in a booming voice. “Sam! Where are you?”I didn’t see her anywhere. Shit, where was she?Suddenly, I heard her. She was shouting and sounded terrified. I spun around and spotted a small garden not far away. She shouted again, and I took off running toward the garden.“Sam!” I bellowed, pumping my arms so I moved faster. I reached the garden’s walking path and hurried in among the hedges and flower beds. I turned a corner and suddenly came upon them. Bill had a hold of Sam’s shoulders and appeared to be trying to contain her, but she was fighting him. Twisting and turning her body, she was also slapping at him as she screamed in fear and fury.I didn’t he

SamanthaI woke with a start and gazed around in confusion. It took me several moments to realize I was in a hospital room and a bit longer to realize I was hooked up to beeping machines with an IV stuck in my wrist.Panic seized me, and I began to hyperventilate. How’d I get here? What happened? My heart monitor began to go crazy, and within seconds, a nurse came rushing into my room, followed closely by Ryan.“Miss Berner?” the nurse said in a calm voice as she reached my bed. “Miss Berner, it’s all right. Can you take a deep breath for me? We need to get your heart rate down.”She took my hand and held my gaze as she showed me how to breathe. I watched her and mimicked her as she sucked air in and slowly blew it out again and again. It took a bit of time, but I managed to pull myself out of my panicked spiral as I focused on my breathing. The machine stopped beeping at last, and I didn’t feel like I was on the verge of a heart attack. The whole time, Ryan stood at the end of my bed

He looked up and nodded. I was stunned at the sight of tears in his eyes.“Yeah, I’m happy,” he said in a choked voice. “Really happy, but…God, Sam, for a moment, I thought I might have lost you, and that terrified me. I realized that I can’t live without you, Sam. I love you. So much. I know I can’t take back what I did, but I want to spend the rest of my life making that mistake up to you. I never want to be without you and Henry again. I know you probably are still cautious about me, and I know it’ll take me time to totally earn back your trust, but I promise I will dedicate my life to doing just that if you give me the chance.”My heart swelled at his words, and I felt tears in the corners of my own eyes. His expression shifted to one of astonishment as he stared at me.“Sam…?”“I love you, too,” I said in a soft voice. “I love you, Ryan, and I don’t want to live without you either.”“What?” he gasped, shaking his head. “But…but how could you…after what I did…”I raised my hand an

“I am happy for you,” he assured me. “Really, I am. I’ve always known your heart belonged to Ryan, as much as I hated that fact at times. For a while, I thought it was better that you two stayed away from each other, but now, I know that you belong together. If you can forgive him for being a colossal dick all those years ago, so can I.”I didn’t realize until that moment how important it was for me to have Jason’s approval. It wouldn’t have changed things had he protested Ryan and I being together, but I wanted him to be happy for me. To be happy for us.I wanted him to continue being an important figure in Henry’s life, as well as my own.Suddenly, there was a commotion outside of my room. I heard a familiar voice start to admonish whatever poor soul was in her way.“Somebody needs to tell me where the hell she is! I swear to God, I will bring the pain if you keep me away from her! I mean that entirely respectfully because I appreciate all the work that nurses and doctors do, but I

chapter 47

RyanMy heart was beating like a drum in my chest as I made my way up the walkway toward Sam’s front porch. I had to remind myself not to crush the wrapped gift I was carrying in my hand because my fingers were flexing and unflexing as a result of my nerves. Truth be told, I wasn’t just nervous. I was terrified.Sam and I had agreed to tell Henry that I was his father. It was several days after the wedding and Bill’s arrest. Sam had spent the night in the hospital, but she had been released the next day. I’d driven her home myself since I’d been unwilling to let her out of my sight. We’d had the conversation then. Sam was the one to initially bring it up.As I’d pulled up to her house, she’d looked at me from the passenger’s seat and said, “I don’t think we should waste any more time. Henry should know who you are.”I’d been stunned, but excited. I’d eagerly agreed and we’d worked out a plan. We’d give it a few days, and then, I’d come over and we’d sit down with him. Sam had wanted t

She clicked a button on the remote, and the cartoon figures on the TV screen froze. Henry didn’t protest as Sam led him to the couch. I followed them, and the three of us settled on the cushions together. Henry sat between us, but I felt as though I were the one being boxed in. I didn’t want to screw this up, and despite Sam’s assurances, I was still terrified Henry wouldn’t be excited to find out who I was.The boy looked between us, a curious gleam in his eye.“Am I in trouble?” he asked.Sam quickly shook her head. “Oh, no, sweetheart. You’re not. I promise.”“Okay.” Henry nodded, his worries forgotten. “What do you want to talk about, then?”Sam shot me a look and a nervous smile. I gulped, my heart hammering as I gave her a quick nod. She turned her gaze back down to Henry.“Do you remember what I’ve told you about your daddy?” she asked.Henry blinked and nodded. “You told me he had to go away before I was born, but that he loved me very much. He was big and strong and looked ju

SamanthaThe weeks after the wedding seemed to go by in a blissful blur.Ryan spent time bonding with Henry, who was absolutely ecstatic to have his daddy around. Every time I saw them together, I had to hold back tears.Henry was a mini-Ryan not only in looks but in personality and charm, and the more they were together, the more obvious that fact became. There were moments when I regretted stealing seven years away from them, but when I voiced that regret to Ryan, he told me to squash it.“We can’t change the past,” he said. “Neither of us. It happened, and it got us to this point. We just need to focus on the here and now. That’s what matters.”I took his words to heart and decided not to let the past cast a shadow over our present. Our moments together were too precious to waste thinking of the what-ifs of our lives.Ryan began making arrangements to have his family’s house be his permanent residence. He’d have to go back to the city fairly regularly to continue running his compan

Giving me a little half-smile, Ryan held out his hand to me.“Come with me,” he ordered.Raising my brow, I slid my hand in his.Intertwining our fingers, he turned and led me out of the room.“Where are we going?” I asked him with a small laugh as we continued down the stairs.“I’ve got a surprise for you,” he told me, shooting a wink over his shoulder.“What kind of surprise?”“You’ll just to wait and see.”I grinned and rolled my eyes, but I let him continue to lead me out the back door. Stepping out onto the back porch, I froze, stunned.“Ryan? What…?”“Surprise,” he said and chuckled, letting go of my hand and stepping aside so I could take in the whole scene unobstructed. There were candles in mason jars set out all throughout the porch and down in the yard, giving everything a soft, warm glow. Toward the middle of the yard was a picnic blanket, on which sat a platter of cheese, crackers, meat, and other finger foods, as well as a bottle of wine.“What is all this?” I gasped.Ry
