Chapter Seventy

Keagan’s P.O.VSlanting fingers of sunlight speared through the gaps in the blinds, painting glowing stripes across her face. The light accentuated the fading bruises on her skin, the angry purple welts now a tender, hopeful pink.Even with the marring marks, she was breathtaking. My wolf ached with a fierce possessiveness as i watched her chest rise and fall with each shallow breath.Tangled with hers, my fingers traced the path of a fading bruise on her arm. A bitter smile twisted my lips. She was healing on the outside, slowly, but surely. Yet, the bitter taste won’t leave my mouth.Open your eyes…please. The plea stuck in my throat and I blinked hard. Reaching out, I brushed a calloused finer over the white bandage wrapped around her head. The sheer vulnerability of it, how it was so different from her fiery spirit sent waves of protectiveness and shame crashing over me.With a sigh, I returned my attention to the book propped on my lap. I picked it back up and began reading out l

Chapter Seventy-one

Author’s P.O.V 17th of June, 2019 Today was their wedding anniversary and coincidentally, it was her death day. The hospital corridor was a hushed, solemn procession, thick with such grief that an inhale felt as though a rock was pressing down on everyone gathered. In the center of it all was Keagan. His shoulder-lenght blond hair was brushed away from his face, tied to untidy bun at the base of his neck. He paced to and fro the length of the entire hall, stopping periodically before the windows. Then he would inhale shakily and press his hand over the cool glass, fixing bloodshot and weary eyes on the sleeping beauty beyond the doors of the ward. She looked so peaceful, so utterly alive, that it was almost unreal. This moment was unreal. It was as if she would open her eyes any moment and ask in her arrogant tone. “What the heck is going on?” Wake up. His wolf growled. If only she had a wolf… His fist tightened and he turned his face away, square jaw clenched tight enough

Chapter Seventy-Two

Keagan’s P.O.V The world tilted and my trembling fingers found purchase on the cool hospital sheets. A shallow and ragged breath escaped my lips as I slowly lifted my head. Oh fuck. My vision blurred at the edges and then focused on her. HER! Alive. My mind screeched to a halt. This couldn’t be real. It was a cruel fucking desperate hallucination conjured by my mind to shy away from my pain. My heart pounded like a jackhammer, echoing in my own eardrums. I clawed my wrists hard enough to draw blood, expecting the pain to ground me in reality. But there she was, her eyes were open, although half-lidded and she was staring at me! Her hands slowly moved from where it was gently brushing my scalp and then cupped my jaw. The contact was electic, jolting me from my stupor. I couldn’t make this up….I wasn’t strong enough to do this! Jessica is alive! Her pale chapped lips parted and made a horrible scratching noise as she tried to speak. Immediately, I snapped upright, moving around

Chapter Seventy-Three

Keagan’s P.O.V“So it would be well appreciated if you all can respect our wishes and not harass Miss Reynolds as she recovers in the hospital room. Next time, I won’t be that tolerable.” I concluded my speech, unfazed by the countless lights flashing in my face. From the horrified gasps and round of applause that echoed in the space at the parking lot of the hospital, I’d been able to pass my message across.“Mr Hall! Are you this close and personal with all the models that work with Halls Enterprise?” A voice called out from the crowd of reporters and my stomach tightened into knots. There was a light hush in the room as they all waited for my answer. Fuck! I’d called this press conference to announce Jessica’s well-being and to stop them from hounding her privacy. A feeling of foreboding washed over me. It was eerily similar to the questions the detectives had asked me. If there was any news of an affair between Jessica and me, it would fucking ugly for both of us. Jessica’s career

Chapter Seventy-Four

Author’s P.O.V“Are you ready?” Keagan asked her and when she gave him two slow nods, he tightened his fingers around her chair and pushed her through the doors that swung open, revealing a frenzy of flashing lights and the relentless clamor of paparazzi.Seeing the panic that flooded her eyes, Keagan hovered even more so over Jessica, lending her his warmth as he gently pushed her. Security formed a human shield around them, their faces etched with professionalism as they pushed back the eager press.“Sylvia, How are you feeling?” A reporter shouted.Dressed in the jeans and sweater Keagan had bought for her, Jessica shivered. Her face still pale, offered a weak smile to the cameras. “Thank you everyone for your concerns. I’m recovering well and I promise to be back on the runway soon.”Another voice called out. “Will you be taking a break from modeling for a while?”Jessica hesitated for a moment, her eyes meeting Keagan’s. Keagan seemed to be pissed though and he bent down to whisp

Chapter Seventy-Five

Jessica’s P.O.VWhat does one do after a brush with death…for the second time in one’s life?Party hard? Spend time with the wrong man who makes your heart beat for the right reasons. Take your children and run away? Burrow into bed and cry your eyes out?None of the above because your mate had just told you to move out of his house. It had taken everything in me not to let my eyes fill up with tears as Keagan spoke earlier in the garden. He was kicking me out. Why? Maybe I read all the signals wrong? Does he want me out of the picture so he can make things work with Emma once again? My heart hurt. A dull, aching pain that spread through my chest like a wildfire. Keagan didn't want me around anymore. Why? The emotions in his eyes had been guilt and regret. Why?Biting my trembling bottom lip, I stared at the flash drive he'd given to me. My eyes watered as I recalled how I'd turned his office upside down every time I tried to look for it and didn't find it. And now, he handed it to

Chapter Seventy-Six

BEWARE ABUSE AHEAD!!! SKIP CHAPTER IF IT'S GONNA BE A TRIGGER. I WAS TRIGGERED MYSELF WHILE WRITING BUT IT’S IMPORTANT.Emma’s P.O.VSo I taught Keagan a lesson so he knew not to ever fucking mess with me but this time, they may have gone a little overboard. My eyes darted across the screen, each image making fear wash over me. The once proud edifice of Keagan’s empire was now a charred skeleton. I’d wanted to hurt him, to make him feel the same pain he always so easily inflicted on me, but this. This was beyond anything I’d imagined.A wave of nausea washed over me as I kept flipping through the images, realizing the extent of the damage. I’d set the fire, yer, but I hadn’t meant for it to consume two entire sections! My fingers clenched as I turned the screen away, wanting to pull at my own hair. It was supposed to be a message, a fucking warning, not a goddamn massacre.I was the one who had planted the seeds of destruction, no surprise there. A bitter laugh escaped my lips. It was

Chapter Seventy-Seven

Jessica’s P.O.VThe rap on the door jolted me from my concentration. My heart pounded in my chest as I frantically tugged off the bracelet with trembling fingers. The hairs on my arms and face disappeared almost immediately and my spine straightened. With a hiss, I shoved the bracelet into my jeans pocket. I had been trying to communicate with Sylvia’s wolf since, to make her do something other than shift. But once I wore the bracelet, I could only manage a half-shift and the wolf just stood, panting harshly and glaring with watery brown eyes. I didn’t know what else to do or how else to get her wolf to talk to me or even listen to my instructions. In this half-shift phase, I can barely move a damned finger, only to forcefully yank off the bracelet from my wrist. It was maddening.“Come in,” I managed once my breathing was under control. The door creaked open and there stood, Meri, the maid I’d paid to keep an eye on Emma. Her face was a mask of terror, eyes wide with panic. My own ey

Chapter Seventy-Eight

Some weeks later.Keagan’s P.O.V“The fire was a setback, undoubtedly,” I began, my voice a low rumble that carried through the conference room. “But it was also a catalyst. We emerged from the ashes stronger and more focused. The renovations are complete and the machine is humming. Smoother than ever. We are operating at peak efficiency and the sky is not our limit at Halls enterprise.”Grunts and murmurs rippled through the board, press, and a few department heads, followed by wolf whistles and a thundering round of applause. Despite the drama of the past few weeks, no one blamed me. Not openly at least.“We will do whatever it takes to contain this,” One of the old dogs offered, rubbing a nervous hand over his balding head.I smirked internally. Containment.? As if. “Unnecessary,” I replied coldly, “the most critical fashion designs were salvaged and I am proud to announce we now have talented Victoria Hensfield working with our team.”Shock filled the faces of most of the people g

Chapter Seventy-Nine

Jessica’s P.O.V“So what do you think happened?” the soft attentive voice floated into my ears but I closed my eyes even tighter, lying on the couch with my arms tucked in. “You have to talk to me, Miss Reynolds. If you want me to help you.”Her last sentence finally snapped the last ends of my nerves and I jumped up from the couch, eyes blazing with rage. “Help me? Help me with what exactly. You don’t fucking believe me. Nobody does.”“Maybe if you try to explain it to me again, using your own words, maybe I’ll understand you better. And don’t forget that whatever you say here, never leaves this room.” My new therapist I’d gone to after what happened two weeks ago gave me a hopeful smile, gesturing at me to take a seat.Sucking in a deep breath, I twisted my fingers into a knot and then lowered myself back on the couch. My lips trembled as I tried to formulate the words but just like before, I found myself stuck in the memory. My heart clenched with an intense pain that had my lips p
