Part Forty

Kiran watched Adara sleep for a few minutes before taking the tray and quietly closing the door behind him. He went downstairs and placed the tray on the counter.“You have to eat something, Kiran. It’s been four days,” Malachi said as he put his paper down. “She’s not going anywhere in her condition. You can take ten minutes to eat.”Kiran sat down next to his father and filled the plate in front of him. He started eating, not having much of an appetite, but Malachi was right. He needed to eat if he didn’t want to turn himself sick.“She’s sleeping again,” he said as Karani sat down across from him.“That’s good. She needs to rest.” Karani looked at Malachi for a few seconds and he smiled. “Really?” Malachi asked and Kiran looked up at them.“Yes,” Karani said and smiled.“You guys are so weird,” he said.Kiran finished his food and left his plate on the table. Karani called him back and he sighed loudly and put his plate on the counter with Adara’s. He went back upstairs and sat on

Part Forty-One

Adara suddenly felt very shy, but she also knew that they deserved an explanation for her turning up on their doorstep. They had taken her in and cared for her and even more so had made her feel safe. She decided that for the first time in her life, she would have to trust someone. Why not them? They had only been good to her.“I don’t really know where to start,” she said, feeling very vulnerable.“Start anywhere you like. Not everything is going to come out in one sitting, but just know that nothing you say here will make us think any less of you. As I’ve said, you are safe here. Why don’t you start with what happened to you that led you here, to us,” Malachi said.Adara took a deep breath and started where James had watched her walk home from the corner. She told them everything, how Ramos had hit her, how Juniper thought that she was having an affair with him, how Juniper hadn’t believed her when she told her that he had repeatedly raped her.Adara had been looking down the entire

I carried Adara back upstairs to her room and got her settled in her bed. She fell asleep almost instantly, and I stood there and watched her for a few minutes. These feelings were different. I wasn’t lusting after her as I had with Sarah in our relationship. I just wanted to be around her, and protect her. I needed to be around her.“James will call it being wolf-locked, but I call it the beginning of imprinting,” Karani said as I closed the door to Adara’s bedroom.I frowned as I looked at my mother. “That’s ridiculous.”“Kiran, you’ve started imprinting on her. The bond doesn’t always snap in place for everyone the same way. She’s very good at blocking things out and she’s blocking out the imprinting as well,” Karani said gently.I could feel Karani’s words slicing my soul. “So, she doesn’t feel it back?”“She does, but she’s fighting those feelings. It’s difficult to explain, Kiran. She didn’t have what you had, the years of wolf life and education. You grew up knowing what you ar

James’ gaze followed mine where I was looking up at the window again and asked me about Adara. He wanted to know everything.“You should’ve seen her. She was soaked from the rain, muddy, beaten, and full of blood. Karani said she was in the forest for five days.” I told him the rest of the horrific details of Adara’s appearance.“So, she’s still here?” James asked and I nodded.“She’s a wolf too,” I said.“But she doesn’t smell like a wolf,” he countered. I explained to him the whole part of her growing up not knowing about wolves and that her parents weren’t her real parents and that her memories were locked away and that she was blocking them. I also told James about her miscarriage and everything she went through right up to the moment she fainted in my arms.“He raped her, James.” I could taste my own anger and hate as I spoke and it left a bitter taste in my mouth.“Oh, shit…you imprinted, didn’t you?” he asked.“Why do you think that?”“Just the way you said those word, ‘he rap

Ramos walked back into the house through the front door and slammed it so hard that Juniper jumped.“What happened?” she asked.“Have you made any attempt at finding Adara?” Ramos asked her.“Why?” Juniper narrowed her eyes at him and snapped. “Do you want her back here for some more midnight fun?” The moment the words were out of her mouth, she regretted it as he grabbed her around her throat with one hand.“What did you just say?” he sneered at her.“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it that way,” she pleaded and he let her go. She rubbed her neck where he had squeezed her so hard that she thought she would pass out. “I went to the police station and reported her as a runaway, just like you said I should.”The smile on Ramos’ face meant that he knew something she didn’t, and she hated it when he kept things from her. “What do you know?”“I know exactly where she is,” Ramos said.Juniper looked up at him. “Where is she?” She had been wondering where Adara had gone that night. She hadn’t taken

At the pack meeting, with everyone upset and a highly pissed off Alpha, John had stood up and pointed a finger at Ramos and Paul. He accused them of setting the fire. Ramos looked shocked at the accusation and the Alpha had to restrain John from coming after him.“What evidence do you have, John?” the Alpha asked.John told the whole pack how Ramos and Paul had been cheating pack members out of their hard earned money at local poker games. One by one, members of their pack stood up and confirmed how they always lost poker games when one of them was playing. The Alpha told Ramos and Paul that they would be spending the night in the den’s cells, until he could uncover the truth of all the allegations. They had not gone inside willingly, and they had to wait two days before the Alpha spoke to them again.Their Alpha walked in with his Beta and a young man. He smelled rich and had the smell of an Alpha on him. A newly appointed Alpha, Ramos decided, as the man with the dark brown hair and

Adara felt much stronger than she had. It had been exactly seventeen days since she had first arrived at their house. Kiran had carried her downstairs two nights later and the living room had been full of people talking in low voices.Malachi had introduced her to them and told her that they all made up the wolfpack of Southern Alaska. The pack had voted that they would extend their protection to her, but since she wasn’t a member of their pack, no tribunal could be held to punish Ramos and Juniper. They would extend her the courtesy of joining their pack on her resurrection night.Malachi had accepted their vote since a man named Richard had argued that to get involved in outcast business would mean that they had to take it to the Council and most probably declare war. They spoke of a wolf that Kiran had killed and that most likely this would be the end of the outcasts in their territory.Kiran hovered, and he didn’t let Adara do anything for herself except shower and use the bathroo

“I’ll let you in on a little secret.” Karani winked at Adara as she sat down on a barstool at the kitchen counter. “One day you’ll marry Kiran.”Adara started to laugh. There was no way Karani could know that and even if she somehow did hope for it, Adara knew better.“Out of your own choosing,” Karani said, looking at Adara with a knowing look in her eyes.“How can you be so sure?” Adara asked.“Kiran is the next born Alpha of our pack, and an Alpha doesn’t imprint on anyone but his true mate,” Karani said.“What’s imprinting?” Adara felt like an idiot. She knew nothing about this new life she had been thrust into.“Imprinting only happens to wolves. It’s a gift from the goddess Freyja showing you who you’re really meant to be with. It’s like finding air to breathe, your soul feels drawn to that person and everything in your life changes. That person becomes your universe. It might sound unbelievable now, but you’ll understand everything when you imprint,” Karani said. “And Kiran im

They sat in the clearing on the ground as Karani told her more about life, how the pecking order in a pack worked, the different ways of becoming an Alpha and what that entailed as well. She told Adara about being born special and having wolf powers.Kiran could see and feel your emotions, so there was no point in lying to him about that. He could also see your aura and he could see Death. Not death, but Death, the person. That had been a shocking revelation to Adara. She’d never thought of Death as a person before. She remained silent about what it was that Malachi could do, but Adara knew that he also had powers of some kind. He seemed to know things at random.Karani could see your memories. She could also take your memories from you and replace them with something else, but that was something she seldom did.Karani also told Adara that she had powers of her own. Adara laughed at that but Karani was serious.“That day James found you in the garden, when I touched your hand, and you

It was nearing 9 PM, and my phone vibrated as a text message came through. It was from Malachi and I opened it quickly. Malachi never texted me. I hurriedly put on a tracksuit and sneakers. James walked into my room without knocking, having received the same text from Garrick.Malachi: Get to the den. Urgent.“What could be so urgent and why are they at the den?” James asked.“No clue, but we better get there,” I said and grabbed my keys.We were planning on a midnight run. At midnight James and I would be eighteen and we wanted to be in wolf form when the moon was at its highest at midnight in the clearing. We drove to the den, unsure of what to expect when we got there. Malachi and Garrick stood outside and we saw them when the Jeep’s lights illuminated them. The den was bathed in darkness but I saw a few other cars there. Now I was very curious as we climbed out of the car and walked toward them.“Take off your shirts, relax, and follow orders,” Malachi said.I pulled my shirt off
