SEVENTY-TWO: THE END AND THE BEGINNING.

TRAVIS LEWIS Driving Britney to school when I had absolutely no classes or intention of staying in school for the day was nothing new. It was something I did with no hidden motives or intention. But for that day, I had an extra motive for dropping her at school- I needed to see Amber. Within the past 24 hours, I’d gone through a series of emotion- lust, jealousy, anger, regret and more than anything, frustration. I was frustrated at Amber, Britney and especially, myself for bringing every single thing that happened upon myself. Britney getting angry and misunderstanding everything that happened was all my fault. I should have been firmer with Amber and stopped her every advances. But the fear of her finding out about Britney and I when Britney wasn’t ready for anyone to find out held me back and without even realizing it myself, only made things worse. Though it had been a while since I last visited, I still knew the route to her house like the back of my hand. The countless ti

SEVENTY-THREE: RIDES AND APOLOGIES.

TRAVIS LEWIS I missed Britney. I missed her. It had barely been twenty fours but I missed her so much already. I missed the smiles she offered me every morning as I dropped her off. I missed the sneak glances we shared in the house whenever our parents were around. Missed sending her text messages whenever I needed her around me. Glancing at the time, I hit the pedal and doubled my speed back to school. Already knowing her schedule by heart, I knew she only had a single class and by my calculations, she was to be done in no time. Driving past the speed limit, I was able to get to her faculty quicker than I expected. Just as I was about to pull over at the parking lot, i immediately spotted her walking out of her faculty, her head hung low, her familiar friend by her side. Blaring the horn to catch her attention, I watched her raise her head to look in my direction. Loosening her grip around her friend’s arms, she muttered a couple of words to her and began walking towards my

SEVENTY-FOUR: BIRTHDAY BLUES.

BRITNEY ASTON Travis: Where are you? Travis: Are you classes not over yet? Travis: Or are you at the library already? I smiled at my phone, reading Travis’ message. Getting texts like that was something I was slowly getting used to over the past few weeks. Good morning texts from him when we were just rooms apart, good night texts when we were in the same house and more texts at totally random hours of the day. Now with the semester almost coming to an end, the library had suddenly became one of my favorite places to be and texts from Travis once it was time to go home becoming one of my favorite to receive. Britney: I’m done. Britney: Where are you? Britney: At the parking lot? Travis: No, outside. Travis: You’ll see me the second you step out of the library.“Elle,” i called out to her as I grabbed my books and got ready to get up. “I’m leaving now. Travis is here already.” She raised her head to look up at me and nodded. Within the past few days, she had noticed how clo

SEVENTY-FIVE: SECRET SURPRISE.

BRITNEY ASTON I could feel color completely drain out of my face as I watched a cake fall out of my mum’s hands. Staring at Travis and I in horror, I watched her almost slump, immediately leaning towards Jack to hold onto him for support. In a flash, Travis’ hands around me was loosened and I quickly fell to my feet, my eyes widening at the realization of what had just happened. It had finally happened. Our parents had finally found out about Travis and I. And in the worst possible way ever. “What is going on here?” Jack demanded, glaring at Travis and I. If looks could kill, we’d both be dead in an instant from how he glared at us, his eyes filled with anger and disgust. “The two of you- why- what in the lord’s name was that?” I took a timid step backwards, Travis immediately doing the same as he caught me trying to shy away. I swallowed and grabbed the hem of my gown, trying my best to fix my gaze on anywhere but our disappointed parents. “Britney,” my mum spoke up, fear evid

SEVENTY-SIX: BEFORE THE REALITY SETS IN.

TRAVIS LEWIS I remained in my room for at least thirty minutes, the voices of Britney and her mum as they yelled at each other filling the quiet house. I was filled with dozens of emotions myself but one I couldn’t even bring myself to feel was regret. Though I wish things had turned out differently and hoped our parents didn’t have to find out on a day I wanted Britney to be the happiest, I didn’t wish things didn’t turn out that way between us. Regardless of whatever their opinions could be, I was glad I met Britney. Glad I got to be with her and confident if anything was ever going to be changing, it would be their opinions and nothing else. I couldn’t say the same for Britney though as I heard her yell at her mum over and over. Though it was hard to figure out the actual words they exchanged, I could easily figure out the emotions behind those words- anger, disappointment and hurt. After what felt like an eternity of them yelling at each other, it finally subsided. Shortly

SEVENTY-SEVEN: NEXT?

TRAVIS LEWIS The house was quiet. An unusual and deafening kind of quiet. I woke up as early as 6am with Britney snuggled in my arms. Glad she managed to get some sleep despite the chaotic night she had just few hours ago, I remained in my position for a while before gently lifting her out of my arms to lay her on the bed so she could get some more sleep. Thankfully, all she did was stir in her sleep, making my exit from her room easy. On my tiptoes, I returned to my room, gently shut the door and laid on my bed to keep my eyes open for the next couple of hours. Now daybreak, several hours had passed but one thing that remained the same was how quiet the house was. There were no sounds of Britney leaving her room or her mum making breakfast or my father heading out for work. The house was just quiet. Extremely quiet. Without stepping out of my room I knew the tension from the night still lingered around every corners of the house. It was a new day and our parents would b

SEVENTY-EIGHT: HER.

TRAVIS LEWIS On dropping Britney off at school, I immediately turned around and drove back home. It had to be the quickest ride I’d embarked on in a while as I was determined to get home as quick as possible. Luckily for me, I was able to meet my goal, getting home in less than twenty minutes of driving. I pulled over in front of the house and got out of my car, slamming the door behind me. Shoving my hands and car keys into my pocket, I stormed in, walking straight into the living room. My plan was to go see my father. Knowing him well enough, I knew the quiet house earlier was just a facade from him. He was in that house and was fuming with all sorts of emotions, waiting for me to show up so he could unleash them all on me. Proving my guess right, the moment i walked into the living room i immediately spotted him seated on one of the sofas. His legs were crossed, one arm folded as he took sips of the coffee in his hand, his gaze fixed on the tv without it actually on. Wit

SEVENTY-NINE: INTO THIN AIR.

BRITNEY ASTON Britney: Where are you? Britney: I wrapped up classes ages ago Britney: Hello?? Britney:Are you asleep? Britney: Or do you have classes? Britney: Travis? Britney: TRAVIS!!! Britney: Are you coming over to pick me or not?! I was losing my mind as I sent the dozenth message in the span of a minute, Travis still refusing to show up. I’d been texting him for over an hour and not only did I not get a single response from him, he refused to show up. My day went fairly well and I’d been looking forward to seeing his face to make it better. Though we still had huge challenges right in front us, I felt a bit less terrified knowing he was by my side and ready to have the two of go through it together. “For heaven’s sake, is his phone broken?!” I groaned to myself as I contemplated sending another text message. “If that’s the case his legs aren’t also broken are they? So where in the world is he?!” “What are you talking about?” Elle asked by my side, taking a

EIGHTY: EMOTIONS.

BRITNEY ASTON The second my alarm rang, my eyes shot open and I was reminded of how empty the house felt without Travis in it. I immediately rushed to my feet, grabbing my phone as i did. Turning it on to check if any of my calls or messages to Travis got returned, I sighed in disappointment as I realized there was not even a single text or call from him. With a grunt, I tossed my phone aside and got up to head outside. My steps were slow as I approached his room and gently placed a knock on it, desperately hoping to get a response. I got none though, my disappointment reaching its peak as I returned to my room. Feeling worried all over again, I ran my hands through my hair and forced myself to get freshened up and get ready for school. Dozens of questions flooded my mind as I got myself ready. The mere thought of going over to school without Travis driving me felt weird. And the fact that I had no clear reason he wasn’t going to be driving me felt even weirder. Regardless,

EIGHTY-ONE: PRINCE CHARMING? I

BRITNEY ASTON “Britney? Britney? Britney!” “Huh?” I almost jumped, Elle’s cold hands on my shoulder pulling me back to my senses. “Sorry, did you say something?” “Yes, I said about a dozen things,” she sent her hands to her waist. “Where is your mind? You’ve been so out of it all day.” “Right, I’m sorry,” I hung my head low and groaned softly. “I’m- I’m just-“ I sighed, running my hands through my hair. I didn’t need Elle to tell me to know how absent minded I’d been the whole day. My mind had been all over the place with Travis’ absence and my argument with my mum and his dad. “Hey, Britney, are you okay?” Her tone suddenly changed as she looked at me with eyes filled with concern. “Is everything okay?” “No,” I shook my head, unable to bring myself to even lie. “Not really. Everything is not okay.” “Do you want to talk about it?” She wrapped her arms around my shoulders. “I’m here for you if you want to talk, you know.” I looked at her and shook my head again, unable
