TWENTY-ONE: INTERLUDE

BRITNEY ASTON I woke up the following morning to the sounds of my alarms blaring and I immediately knew I’d overslept. As quickly as I could, I dashed into the bathroom, took a quick bath, stepped out to get dressed and in no time was out of my room with the intention to head straight towards the door and leave the house. But apparently, life had other plans in store for me. The second I got down the stairs, I was welcomed by the smell of freshly made food. It was nothing much, the aroma signifying someone had just made toasts but at the same time, it managed to make my stomach rumble. “Finally, you’re downstairs.” All of a sudden, Travis appeared in front of the obviously from the kitchen with a table knife in his hand. He was dressed in a regular black tshirt and black jeans, his hair decent, eyes sparkling. Everything about him looked plain and regular but for some reason, I immediately felt a flip in my stomach. It was definitely the hunger. I was just hungry. “H

TWENTY TWO: AMBER.

BRITNEY ASTON Lucas: At school already? Travis: Are you in class already? I stared at the two messages on my screen, wondering what wicked coincidence I was suddenly dealing with. For Travis, though it was unusual, his reason for wanting to know if I had gotten to class was a bit understandable. He had dropped me off and just wanted to know if I’d gotten to my destination safely. Lucas on the other hand was unprovoked. We didn’t have any previous encounters that was supposed to lead to him being curious about my whereabouts. But regardless, I replied both their texts. Britney: Yup Britney: Yeah. Clicking my tongue, I stared at my phone, wondering whose chat floating bubbles were going to appear from first. Coincidentally, the bubbles appeared from both their contacts immediately, their replies coming in almost simultaneously. Travis: ok cool. My classes end by 4pm so don’t forget to text me the second your classes are over so we can head home together. Lucas: Would you be

TWENTY-THREE: APOLOGIES AND CONSEQUENCES

BRITNEY ASTON There were dozens of eyes in my direction and I could feel my cheeks heat up at just the thought. And I just knew the best way to get out of that situation was to leave. With Travis. “Yes,” I nodded to him, causing a fresh wave of murmurs in my direction. “Let’s go.” I knew I’d probably given the people around more things to talk about. I’d successfully doubled the curiosity around me and most likely, Amber’s interest in me. But I couldn’t bring myself to care any less at that moment. “Let’s go then.” Before I could flinch, he reached for my hands, tightened his around it and led the way out of the club. Quickly, I turned my head to flash Elle an apologetic glance, having her nod and smile at me in return. Finally, we got outside, Travis finally letting go of my hand as he helped me with the door. Signalling to me to get in, I got into the car, fixed my seatbelt and waited for him to appear in the driver’s seat. “How did you know where I was?” I asked him the mom

TWENTY FOUR: COZY MARTS

TRAVIS LEWIS Sleeping in on weekends weren’t exactly my thing and at the same time, waking up particularly early weren’t it either. But here I was, waking up unusually early on a Saturday, all because of my plans with Britney. It made sense to call it a date though it technically wasn’t. We were just going to be spending a couple of hours together shopping. In a nonromantic manner. I simply needed an extra hand and she was willing to offer an extra hand. So though it made sense to pass on as a date, it wasn’t. We were scheduled to meet up downstairs by 10am and I was up by 8am. With more than enough time to get myself fully prepared, I was done by 9am, left with no choice but to spend the remaining hour doing nothing in particular. The second it was 9:45am, I stepped out of my room and headed downstairs walking straight to the kitchen. Opening the fridge, I took out a good amount of snacks I believed would be able to keep our company throughout our ride to the store and back. Fi

TWENTY-FIVE: COZY DRIVES.

BRITNEY ASTON “Rock, paper, scissors! Ha, I win!” A scowl immediately appeared on Travis’ face, having me instantly burst into laughter. Never did I imagine he’ll offer to play rock paper scissors with me and even more, lose when he sounded so confident just a couple of minutes ago. But then, taking me by surprise suddenly seemed like his new favorite thing to do. From the shopping mart to the restaurant and now the cinema- it was like there were just tons of sides to him I was yet to explore. “Shall we, loser?” “Whatever,” he rolled his eyes playfully and resumed walking. “Get the tickets then. I’ll get the popcorn.” “Deal.” I walked over to the line to get our tickets. They had a couple of movies on display, the sci-fi one immediately catching my eye. There were a number of other genres including romance and I didn’t need to be reminded of why romance was going to be my last resort. I got our tickets and the minute I spun around, caught sight of Travis walking toward

TWENTY-SIX: (STEP) BROTHER.

BRITNEY ASTON Staring at my reflection in the mirror, a contented sigh escaped my lips. I was dressed in a red gown hugging my body, showing off my curves and reminding me why red was my favourite color. I had to admit, it did justice to my skin tone and combined with the light make up I had on, made me look pretty okay. With a nod, I hoped I wasn’t over flattering myself, desperately hoping I looked okay in Travis’ eyes too. I had to. I just had to. Shifting my gaze from the mirror, I glanced at the wall clock noticing it was already past 7pm. Travis and I were supposed to leave by 7 and after suggesting I went to the party with him, the last thing i wanted was for him to be late all because of me. Giving my reflection in the mirror a final quick glance, I grabbed my purse and my phone and dashed out of my room. Hitting the stairs immediately, I ran downstairs, spotting him the second I hit the ground floor. “Oh, there you are.” “Travis,” I breathed out as he turned around to

TWENTY-SEVEN: TRUTH OR DARE.

BRITNEY ASTON Lucas was Amber’s brother. “Crap,” I cursed under my breath, the realization hitting me like a punch in my guts. I could finally understand why things seemed so complicated. It was slowly making sense. Lucas was Amber’s brother and Amber was Travis’ favorite plaything. It only made sense Travis and Lucas weren’t each other’s favorite. “Britney?” Before I could fully process everything going on, I heard Lucas call out my name. “I didn’t think I’d see you here. I was going to invite you myself but I texted you and um, didn’t get a response.” “What? Oh, I’m sorry,” I hung my head as I replied, noticing how all eyes were suddenly darted in my directions. “I didnt realize you texted me.” “Do you mind right now?” He spoke up again, pushing me to finally raise my head to meet his gaze. His eyes were cold as he spoke and I could tell how uncomfortable he was. “You’re not busy right now, are you? Can we talk for a sec-“ “What do you mean?” Amber suddenly interrupted, movin

TWENTY EIGHT: DARE OR TRUTH.

TRAVIS LEWIS “I dare you to kiss Britney.” My jaw clenched in an instant, every single bone in my body stiffening as Amber uttered her dare to Lucas so carelessly. The tension that suddenly filled the air was undeniable to everyone seated, every single person knowing the gravity of what was to come. For Amber, it was probably another of her jokes. One targeted at erupting emotions from every one of us. And if that was her goal, she succeeded at it perfectly. “Now this seems exciting.” “Come on, it’s just a kiss.” I glared at Justin as he made his comment, watching him immediately press his lips against each other. It was just a kiss? Just a kiss with Lucas? “Are you going to do it or-“ I looked at Lucas, watching him shift in his seat. With an arched brow, I watched him turn towards Britney, his palms suddenly fidgety on his thigh. Just what the fuck was he thinking? Britney on the other hand, remained glued in her seat, her eyes on the cups on the table. I could tell how

TWENTY-NINE: FEELINGS, EMOTIONS.

BRITNEY ASTON I stormed out of the party, fuming with nowhere in particular to go in mind. All I knew was I had to leave. Leave that place, that surrounding, that atmosphere- fast. I knew Lucas was right behind me but I couldn’t care any less. Reading the room, he knew better than to have his arm around my shoulder remain there for another second the moment Travis was out of sight. It was like he knew I wanted to be alone at that moment but still couldn’t help but follow me like a helpless puppy. “Britney, wait up. Where are you going?” His words were oddly enough to get me to pause my steps for a while, immediately taking in deep breaths. Realizing I was in the process of calming down, he walked towards me, placed a hand on my shoulder and raised my head so I could look at him directly in the eye. “Are you okay? Look I’m sorry about earlier okay?” He said, biting his lip in obvious remorse. “I wasn’t going to kiss you without your permission. I didn’t realize you’d get so uncom

THIRTY: PERFECT ESCAPE.

BRITNEY ASTON I woke up with a terrible headache, my memory foggy but at the same time clear enough to remind me of exactly how the previous night went. Shrugging the urge to do nothing but stay in bed away, I got up and dragged myself into the bathroom to take a shower. Stripping off the clothes from the night before, I caught the sight of Travis’ jacket by one corner of my room, begging me to pay attention to it and probably pick it from the ground. Again, ignoring that urge, I took my shower, returned to my room and opened my closet to get dressed. Going with a dark jeans and even darker colored shirt totally mirroring my state of mind, I grabbed my backpack, my almost dead phone and headed out of the room. It was a bit earlier than usual but that was exactly my plan- to leave the house before anyone woke up. Anyone, especially Travis. I didn’t want to see him and definitely didn’t want him offering to drive me to school. I didn’t even want to have to reject his offer, leavin
