She told me that she cares for her mother twenty-four-seven, which must mean she’s been confined to her home since she was sixteen. Reading must have been a comfort to her, something she could fit around looking after her mum. Maybe she started by doing a blog reviewing books and movies, and the podcast grew out of that. She’s done extremely well for herself, though, to develop it as well as she has.How does she make a living out of it, though? She must monetize her podcasts. I remember something then and google Wonderland and Patreon. Yeah, I was right—you can support her on Patreon and get extra interviews, reviews, discussions, and even merchandise. She’s also running a Kickstarter campaign to fund a proper studio that’s already passed its target amount. Wow. She’s quite the entrepreneur. Now I’m really impressed. Why didn’t she tell me any of this? I’d have been fascinated and would have loved to chat to her about it. But even as I form the question, I know the answer. It’s the s

What do you want?” she snaps. My eyebrows rise. “Hey, Chloe. I was looking for Craig.”She frowns. “He’s not here.”“Okay. I’ve tried calling him but it just goes to voicemail. Do you know what time he’ll be home?”She meets my eyes and gives a short, humorless laugh. “He won’t be home, Kip. He’s left me.”My jaw drops. “What?”Some of her animosity fades as she obviously realizes from my reaction that I’m telling the truth. She sighs and moves back. “Come in.”I walk past her into the house, toe off my shoes, and leave them by the door. My heart is banging. Craig’s left her? Jesus. They’ve been together for years. I thought we were best mates. Why didn’t he tell me?“Go in the living room,” she says, and I walk in there. It’s untidy; kids’ toys litter the floor, and an open suitcase sits on the dining table, half-packed.Chloe comes in behind me. “Do you want a coffee?”“No thank you, I’m fine.”She gestures at the sofa, and I take a seat.“What’s going on?” I ask softly.“He left me

AliceThe journey home to Gisborne is a long one. Luckily it’s a nice day, and the roads are relatively clear. We chat for most of it, and also sing to music, but the couple of stops we take and a few bouts of roadworks mean it’s nearly seven by the time I pull onto the drive and turn off the engine, and we’re both knackered.“Thank fuck,” Charlie says. Then she turns to me and gives me a big hug. “Thank you so much for coming to get me.”“Oh, you’re welcome. Anytime.” I hug her back. “Come on, let’s go and see Mum.”We get our bags out of the car and head down the path to the front door. This is our family home—a moderately sized, four-bedroomed house in a quiet cul-de-sac. Luckily, the insurance money we received after Dad died paid off the mortgage. I don’t know how we’d have coped if we’d had to find that money each month. The surrounding lawns are neat—my uncle must have mown them while we were away—and the roses I planted around the front porch are blooming and smell gorgeous as

“She did enjoy it though.”I smile. “Then it was worth it.”“I’m glad you appear to have had a good time.” Her eyes twinkle.I glance at the house. “I wasn’t going to tell Mum. I don’t want her to think she’s holding me back.”“She thinks that anyway, sweetie.”“Yeah, but it’s going to be worse if she thinks I’ve met someone.”“Have you? Met someone?”I hesitate. “No. It was just a… fling, I guess.”“But you’re about to text him?”“He asked me to let him know I got home safely, that’s all.”“Right.”I give her a wry look. “He’s a nice guy. But I live nine hours away.”Her smile fades. “Yeah, I know. I’m so sorry. I should do more…”“Oh God, June, no, don’t say that. Christ, you have a full-time job, and a husband and four teenagers at home. You already do more than enough. This is why I didn’t want to say anything. I’m not looking for things to change. I’m happy with the way things are. I just wanted…” My brain fills in the blanks. A gorgeous guy to go down on me. Who’d take my virgin

“Yes, like the one Stephen Hawking used?”“Yeah. I know this sounds arrogant, but the software is miles better than anything on the market at the moment. It’s called MOTHER.”“Like in Alien?”“Yeah,” he says softly, and I think he’s smiling. “I’ve been working with my cousin, who runs an AI company.”“Titus, right? Charlie had read about him.”“Yeah, that’s right. The predictive text component is especially advanced, and it’s going to make a real difference for people with speech difficulties. In November, we discussed which company we wanted to employ to make the speech synthesizer. Saxon and I wanted one company, and Craig was super-enthusiastic about another. In the end, I went with the company I liked. Then we discovered that he’d talked to a reporter and told them we’d sold to the company he recommended, Sunrise.”“Shit, really?”“I confronted him. He said Sunrise had offered double what Genica, the company I wanted, had offered. When I said it didn’t matter, that I wasn’t going

KipIt’s Friday the twenty-third of December, and the last day we’re officially open at Kingpinz for several weeks. The girls in the office have put up a Christmas tree a few weeks ago, and they’ve decorated their desks with tinsel and other festive ornaments. The guys haven’t bothered, as usual, and mostly complain about all the fuss while secretly enjoying the atmosphere. All morning the secretaries have been organizing our Christmas party. There’s going to be a Secret Santa, and the caterers we’ve hired are just finishing setting up the food and drink in the boardroom.I’m at my desk, signing some letters that Marion’s left me, when there’s a knock at my door, and Saxon walks in. My eyebrows rise. He’s wearing a pair of antlers and a big round nose that’s flashing red.“Guess which reindeer I am,” he says.I lean back and lift my glasses onto my hair. “Wanker?”He laughs, takes off the nose, and sits in front of my desk. “Just trying to get in the mood.”“What’s up?”“I wondered if

A few hours later, I slip out of the building and walk to my car.The party will continue for a few hours yet, but I’m not in the mood for festivities. Saxon has already left anyway, keen to return to his girl. We’ve left Damon there being the life and soul of the party. Hopefully he’ll stay sober enough to steer clear of the young secretaries who are all fluttering their eyelashes at him.I haven’t drunk any alcohol, so I get in my Merc and head out to Oriental Bay, where Renée Garnier apparently lives, and where I’m assuming Craig is now staying. I’m not sure what I’m going to say to him yet. I just know that I need to talk to him.It takes me about fifteen minutes to get there. While I drive, I play one of Alice’s podcasts. She’s interviewing a Kiwi author of a series of fantasy novels, an older guy, and it’s a great interview, with him chuckling constantly as she teases him and makes him laugh. I listen to her husky voice and imagine her singing that Joss Stone song to me in bed,

I look down at her. “And don’t talk to me like I’m one of your subs. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business, and so is his marriage. But you bring it into the office, it makes it my business. Did you target him on purpose? Because you wanted the software for yourself?”She shrugs. “I was willing to pay a small fortune for the software. Still am.”Disgusted, I look back at Craig. She grabs my arm. “Don’t you turn away from me.”I look at her hand where she’s holding my arm. Then I lift my gaze to hers. She glares at me, refusing to back down, eyes blazing. I wait. Eventually, after about twenty seconds, she slowly lowers her hand and drops her eyes.Lips curving up a little, I turn away from her, back to Craig. Now that I understand what’s going on here, I think I have an insight into his problems with Chloe. Craig obviously enjoys being dominated, and Chloe is too quiet and gentle to take on that role, which was probably why he was so cruel to her when he left.“

AliceKip finally messages me just after eight p.m.Just finished the podcast, he says.I’m in the living room, watching a movie with Mum and Charlie, curled up in one of the armchairs. Smiling, I text him back. What did you think?Kip:Loved it. Thought you really brought her out of herself. She seemed very shy.Me:She was. Nobody remains shy with me for long though!Kip:You’re a very easy person to be with.Me:Sorry did you just call me easy?Kip:LOL no!Me:I did sleep with you the first day I met you.Kip:You were also a virgin. I’d hardly call that easy.Me:Good point.“Are you texting Kip?” Charlie asks.I put my phone down, blushing. “No.”“You are,” Mum says. “You’re smiling.”“I smile all the time.”“It’s your bashful smile,” Charlie says. “That’s how you looked at him that morning after he kissed you.”Mum smiles. I know Charlie told her that Kip and I spent the night together. Mum hasn’t mentioned it to me yet. I think she’s aware I don’t want that conversation—not because I’m

The next morning, I help Mum get dressed and do her hair for her, and then Charlie offers to take her for a walk to the shops while I get to work. The two of them head out, and I make myself a coffee, then take it into the studio. At least today I’m typing, not speaking, but I’m still nervous. My success with Wonderland so far has surprised me, and it seems to be getting bigger. I didn’t expect it at all. I’ve always loved reading, but it was only when I was confined to the house when Mum fell ill that I started to write reviews and share them online. I was totally surprised when I started to get feedback, and even more surprised when I emailed a well-known Kiwi author that I loved to ask whether I could interview her, and she said yes. That was the start of Wonderland, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it ever since.I bring up Reddit, and the IamA subreddit, get myself ready and comfortable, introduce myself with the bio I’ve prepared as it strikes ten, then wait for any questions.I
