Chapter 41

CHAPTER FORTY ONERYKER I was exhausted from having to deal with Pack issues and I stayed up late, resolving it, totally forgetting I had a meeting to prepare for the next day.My only intention was to go straight to bed but I guess that changed when I opened the door of my office to find Roxanne standing there looking nervous as ever.I fixed my eyes on her and watched her cheeks heat up. She looked cute in her little outfit but her hair as always was a mess. But I didn't care.“Huh, hi. I need company,” she said and gave me a small smile.I shrugged and shut the door of my office behind me. “It's late. You should be in bed by now.”She crossed her arms on her chest defensively.“Well, I don't have a bedtime, so I can stay up as long as I want.”“Read a book,” I said and began walking away but she was faster. She blocked my path with her tint frame, as if I couldn't shove her aside.“First of all Alpha Ryker, I'm an adult. Secondly your people are having their combat training, direct

Chapter 42

CHAPTER FORTY TWOROXANNE “I was eleven when I first killed someone,” Ryker said and gulped. I watched his expression. It shifted from time to time. Firstly his eyes reflected pain, then anger and then his gaze was cold. I swallowed. “You don't have to talk about it.”He shrugged his shoulders, “I've told you almost everything I need to tell you. There's no need to stop now.”I chose my next question carefully. “How did you feel when you had your first kill?”He laughed heartily and smiled at me.“Scared and excited.”“You're so sick,” I teased. He sighed. “My father gave me his dagger and told me ‘pick out any of the people you want dead’ and trust me there were quite a number of them that I wanted dead.”I stared at him in silence. “You've had enemies since you were eleven?”“Yeah,” he said truthfully. “They said they didn't want a weakling and a crybaby for an Alpha. When I couldn't decide, my father brought out Beta Miles’ father and asked me to kill him.”My mouth gaped open and

Chapter 43

CHAPTER FORTY THREE ROXANNE As I settled in bed, sleep eluded me. Ryker’s revelation stirred a whirlwind of thoughts in my mind and now I knew he didn't have it easy either. He had been forced to be tough and now that he was grown, his struggles were hidden behind a facade of strength developed since childhood. My thoughts drifted to his reaction when I expressed my desire to learn how to fight, how to kill. Deep down I knew that was all I wanted. I had felt a twinge of helplessness when he asked me to stab him and now I knew killing wasn't meant for everyone. It was an art but I was sure I could master it. With time.If I could be so scared then why did my brother do it so naturally when we were young? Perhaps that was why he had walked away when he pushed me into the water.***The next day, I went to the library with Beta Miles to fetch some books since I was almost becoming furniture in my room and I was bored to death from doing the same routine of waking and staying in my bed

Chapter 44

CHAPTER FORTY FOUR ROXANNEI was startled when I heard the Alpha sent for me. He hadn't spoken to me in a while which I was trying to adapt to because he was the Alpha and I was one of his subjects. I had to get used to not being around my Alpha and Beta all the time.I hastily jumped out of bed, forgetting I was still in my pyjamas at twelve noon. I was finding it hard to decide if it was because i wasn't a morning person, or because I was a lazy person.“He's in his office, just knock at the door,” Beta Miles said before disappearing.I sucked in my breath and after lots of contemplation, I knocked at the door before slowly opening it.This man had a habit of not responding but shouting when someone didn't knock before entering. “Alpha, you sent for me,” I said while waiting at the door.“Sit,” He said, motioning at the chair opposite his.I reluctantly sat down and stared at him, catching a whiff of his scent. I didn't know why but today he looked unbearably handsome even with the

Chapter 45

CHAPTER FORTY FIVERYKER For the first time in forever, I tried desperately to get away from Roxanne. Yes someone could call me an idiot or a weakling but it was a bloodmoon and her scent was everywhere, dangerously. Vanilla and chocolate– it invaded my senses and I regretted asking her to come outside today. My heart throbbed in palpitation and I could feel myself losing it. Losing my self control. I followed her scent to the far end of the beach. And there she was looking beautiful as she always did and she kept a perfect distance from the sea.“Hi,” she called, waving her hands. “Is it wrong if I want to stay as far as possible from the water?”“No, it's fine,” I said as I tried to calm my breath while I approached her.She beamed at me, looking so pretty in that dress that left so little to my imagination. It was skimpy, perhaps an inch or two past her butt and it shimmered under the dark glow of the moon. Her hair was wild and free as always and she was barefoot too– as always

Chapter 46

CHAPTER FORTY SIXROXANNEIt's been three whole days since the Alpha last talked to me or visited me and I felt like I was losing my sanity. Or maybe, I've already lost it.I was too grown– I was too old to be grounded but this asshole wasn't getting it. I hated that I had to be locked up like a twelve year old and I couldn't even take a walk in the pack house. All I did was bathe and eat and stay in my room, staring out the window till it was dark and I had to fall asleep again.I didn't like being confined in Red Moon. It was never quiet. I liked solace but not in these sorts of places. I grabbed a glass vase and flung it across the room but it just rolled away.I hope you didn't think it was glass. I didn't dare break anything in the Alpha’s house. It cost a fortune and even if I was sold, I would never be enough to get it back. So whenever I was mad about something, I would reach for the plastic items and fling it– No damage plus aggression successfully transferred. I barely saw

Chapter 47

CHAPTER FORTY SEVEN ROXANNEI gingerly collected the letter from the maid, Fabiola. “Thank you,” I said and closed the door behind me. I was puzzled. Hadn't Ryker told me there wouldn't be any letters and if he wanted to see me, he would come to my room?Or… was he trying to be romantic?I took my seat at the dressing table and a smile danced on my lips as I stared at the white envelope. My heart pounded loudly in my chest. Our last disagreement wasn't nice but I didn't think he would want to make up so soon.Well not everyone was like me who could hold a grudge till eternity. What if it was bad news that was in the letter? I twirled it as I battled with my instincts on whether to leave it or not.Deep down I wanted him to come here begging. Okay, perhaps I was being delusional. Ryker was too egoistic to beg in person so maybe his letter was the only way to reach out to me. And it wasn't everyday I got a letter— actually it was my first letter so, fuck it!I ripped open the seal and

Chapter 48

CHAPTER FORTY EIGHTROXANNE The cuffs were released and I crawled to my feet, crying from the pain that consumed my existence. I slipped on my blood as they counted, “two.”In the darkness, I couldn't make it to the door of the halls, so I dragged myself to the window and stared at it for a while.“Three, run rabbit,” they jeered and I could hear their steps approach me.You can't let them win. They're close.I closed my eyes and with determination, I summoned every ounce of strength and smashed the window with a punch. I picked up my skirts and jumped out, tumbling in the process.I ran into the heart of the woods, ignoring the person who called my name. It wasn't Ryker. It was a woman and it wasn't one that I recognised. Fear gripped me and held me steady in its cold embrace. Her voice was full of mockery and bitterness. “If you had a wolf, you would have probably shifted by now, you know?”How did they know? I never told anyone I didn't have a wolf. Ryker figured it out by himse

Chapter 49

CHAPTER FORTY NINE RYKER I sat in my office, the weight of regrets heavy on my shoulders. My heart ached with sorrow as I thought about the moments I had ignored Roxanne, consumed by the demands of the pack's work and our fight. If only I had been there for her, if only I had listened to my wolf, she wouldn't be in this dire state now.I wished I could go back in time to rectify it. I had one sole duty and that was to protect Roxanne, and in that, I had failed miserably. Whoever it was that had written that letter was someone who knew about our fight.I gulped down the glass of alcohol and flung the bottle across the room. As the somber atmosphere lingered thick in the air, a knock around the door startled me.Beta Miles entered with a grave expression on his face. He scrutinized the mess in my office and looked at me. His concerned voice broke the silence. “Alpha Ryker, the physician from White Moon is here.”I nodded solemnly and followed him to Roxanne's bedroom where she lay mot

Chapter 50

CHAPTER FIFTY ROXANNEYou know that light head‐ ness that comes with being run over by a carriage and series of hooves of many horses. That's if you've ever been run over by a carriage. That dizzy feeling, like the world is swirling around you and then you feel yourself falling into a deep end— that was what best describes my situation the minute I opened my eyes.It was as though the world had shifted on its axis and everything seemed different. My vision was blurry and I could make out one color — blue. The constant beep in my ear was beginning to annoy me and the repugnant odor of antiseptic congested my nostrils and invaded my senses.I moaned and slowly forced my heavy eyelids wider apart till my vision became clear. I didn't recognise anything and I could barely lift my finger. Now I saw white and then— a pair of eyes.“You're awake!” someone squeaked. Was it now a thing if someone was awake?“Don't move please,” a man said in the calmest voice ever as he flashed a light in bo
