Chapter Seventy-One

Cameron, Darby, Sally, and the kids were home when I got back. Darby was in the kitchen doing what she knew how to do best, which was preparing us a sumptuous meal. Cameron was tending to the twins, and Sally was busy sleeping off her drunkenness. When she woke up, I had planned to tell her how angry I was at her for not being there with me at the board meeting. I had a long day; I felt exhausted, hungry, and also satisfied. I had made the board get another picture of me, one that they would not be getting out of their minds any time soon. And I had also begun a war with Andre and his family, and for the first game, I was winning. I felt fulfilled. If all went according to plan, then by next month, I should be out of this damned town and back to BlackBrick. I wondered how Paula and Esther were doing. Cameron had said they were doing great when I asked, and when I asked if they looked like they missed me, his reply was yes. “We aren’t actually buddies, Lana. I can’t go asking them st

Chapter Seventy-Two

“You did what?!” Sally shrieked and then winced. I suppose she was still experiencing a hangover from getting drunk at her own mother’s funeral. It was me who should be mad at her. I don’t get how the tables turned, but I learned at a very young age that nothing is fair in this life.I took a spoonful of Darby’s stew and shoved it in my mouth, then picked up more salad. If I kept my mouth busy, I didn’t have to talk. I nodded at Darby; her cooking is still very good. Sally looked at Cameron for support. “Cameron!” she called. “Tell your girlfriend why what she did was a mistake.”Technically, I was not his girlfriend, but I was not averse to anyone thinking what they wanted. Cameron glanced at me and shrugged his shoulders. “I think she did what she had to do in the heat of the moment. The board would have eaten her alive.”She slapped her head and winced again. “I cannot believe you are taking her side.” She glowered at me. “I am not available for one night, and you go and mess up e

Chapter Seventy-Three

Kathy has been caught doing many things. It was hard to keep track of her many sins, but let’s see: she has been caught cheating both in school and on her husband; she has been caught pointing a gun at someone, although she intended no harm, merely to intimidate the person into paying her the money they owed her. She has been caught snatching other women’s husbands; this one is no fault of hers. The women just couldn’t hold their husbands tight enough. There were many other sins, which we couldn’t mention here, but we know that Kathy is one hell of a sinner, and she has been caught many times, but one thing she hasn’t been caught doing is ‘not getting what she wants’.Kathy always gets what she wants, and now what Kathy wanted—or whom, rather. Kathy wanted Cameron, and she was going to get him no matter what. Even if she had to team up with that self-centred, egotistical, and misogynistic jerk, André,.She hated that she had to put up with his new obsession for Lana; it was hard to und

Chapter Seventy-Four

“What do you mean you are here to see Lana?” Cameron asked with a suspicious air. His eyes darted to the road behind her and then back to her face. “What game are you playing at?”The one where I get what I want. Kathy thought. “No games at all. I just want to talk to Lana.” She replied. “I realise we have had our differences, and I just want her to know that I had no part in whatever happened in her life.”Cameron was about to answer when the voice called from inside again. “Cameron, if we have a guest, let them in.” Cameron hesitated. His eyes narrowed, and his mouth pursed. Oh God. Those lips. He pushed the door wide open and stood to the side. “While you are in here, behave yourself; if you say one word out of line to Lana, I will throw you out myself.”Kathy smiled. “You must love her so much.” She gushed, brushing towards him in the house. Cameron followed closely behind her, and she could feel his eyes digging holes in her back. She smiled. I hope you have X-ray eyes, Cameron.

Chapter Seventy-Five

Freda wanted him to spy on Ms. Lana. It was a tough spot she put him on, and he was ready to decline, yet as he stood in front of the kindhearted and smart Lana, he froze. Madam Freda was not someone he could betray like that, and he was sure it would be hard to shake her off. His heart wanted to do the right thing. Then do it, a voice in his head muttered. But fear held him down. He glanced up at Lana’s expectant gaze and looked away immediately. He had entered here, announcing that he had an important confession to make, and she had dropped all of her work just to listen to him. What was he doing, wasting her time? What would she say after he confessed? Give him a pat on the back and say, Don’t be a naughty boy again. Definitely not, but it was definitely better than continuing to work for that witch. All the guilt was beginning to eat at him. He did not used to feel guilty about all the others; they deserved what they got, but Lana was different. She was fighting for all of them.

Chapter Seventy-Six

The board members were all seated; even McCoy was here, which I noticed with a bit of amusement. After the argument yesterday and my threat, I expected he would refuse to show up for the meeting today, but I guess he decided to call my bluff, or did he want to see if I was only playing mind games?I stood from my seat, calling the hall to silence. All eyes turned to me. “Yesterday, I informed us that a representative from BlackBrick would be visiting us.” Murmurs ran across the room, and they glanced at each other. I smiled. “Well, today, we have with us that representative. Please, welcome, Cameron Myers.” I gestured with my hands to where Cameron sat beside me. “CEO, BlackBrick Global.”Mouths went agape, and gasps filled the room. I was sure that they were not expecting the CEO himself to present the proposal to them. They all jumped to their feet, their eyes leaving me to rest hungrily on Cameron.“Sir,” McCoy said. “We didn’t think you would come all the way here by yourself.”

Chapter Seventy-Seven

Cameron’s POVI walked into the shop with my heart in my mouth. This was something I wanted to do, something I’d been putting off for a long time now, and with the speed at which my relationship with Lana was going, this time seemed like the best time, or I could just wait till never. But I was not sure. Would she want this? Was she ready for this big step in our relationship? Everything in my body screamed a very big no, but Darby said, “Yes!!!”“Christ! You don’t know Lana like I do.” Darby said, admiring the various assortments of jewellery and rings in the shop. She almost cried when she saw one, and she wiggled her fingers dreamily. “I think this one would suit me just fine.”I scratched my head. I could still remember the first time I asked Lana out and the look on her face as she turned me down. I shook my head, clearing the memory from my head. That experience had left a bad taste in my mouth, and I did not want to go through it again. But I also wanted to do this. I wanted to

Chapter Seventy-Eight

Kathy went over and gave Andre a slight peck on the cheek, which he wiped off immediately. Typical, I thought expressionlessly. I was a fool for thinking André could ever change. I saw Kathy smile meekly at him—a smile that did not reach her eyes—before turning to me. Andre did not return her smile, nor did he look at her. His attention was concentrated on me, and this made my face flush red from embarrassment. What is he doing? I wondered. His wife is right there. The least he can do is respect her. But I have never known Andre to respect any woman except for his mother. That one had him under a special spell.Kathy tapped my arm gently. “We should be on our way.”“Oh,” I said, shaking myself out of the thoughts that consumed me. I allowed him to lead me out of the house, not sparing either Andre or the house, which had been my home for five years, a second glance. “So long, Andre,” I muttered under my breath.“I am sorry for keeping you waiting,” Kathy apologised as soon as we were

Chapter Seventy-Nine

I was weak to the knees when I returned home. My meeting with Kathy got me thinking about a lot of not-good scenarios. Possibilities of a future, and none of them ended in a good way. I would die before I let André take my children from me.Darby and Cameron were back, and they looked like they had a good time. They kept smiling at each other and whispering behind my back like high school sweethearts. I did not even want to know what was going on between them. I was already in a foul mood, and I didn’t want to soil it any further.I retired to the children’s room, where they were with the nanny. They were already asleep, and the nanny was reading a page from a children’s book. “Thank you, Page.” I said it with a tired smile. “Did they eat before they slept?”Page nodded. “Yes. I made sure to feed and bathe them.”“Thank you.” I said again, peering into their cots. My little joy-givers. They looked so small and so beautiful. Don’t worry, my darlings. I won’t let anyone take you away fr

Chapter Eighty

Andre’s POVThe plan was underway, and I was happy. Once Kathy succeeded in getting close enough to Lana and brought me samples of the kids’ blood, fluid, nails, or anything else that belonged to the children, I would carry out the test, and I was sure those children were mine.Let’s see Lana resist me when I am the only key to her seeing her children. I wished I did not have to do this, but she was leaving me no choice. I wanted her, and I must have her. I glanced at Kathy, who lay asleep beside me, and I had to give it to her. She really was something, coming up with this idea and following it through.Although I had to remind myself that she was also doing this for her own selfish interests, not because she actually wanted to help me, As she said, what she wants, she gets, and I did not care what it was she wanted as long as it brought me something that I wanted as well: my family.“Hey,” she said, blinking her eyes open. “You are still awake?”She turned to glance at the time on h
