ROSE My head is pounding, and I taste blood in my mouth. I try to move but my hands aren’t moving properly. It’s like they’re tied together. I try to move my legs, but the pain is too much, I don’t want to move them. “Mama?” I hear my Maddie’s voice in the darkness. “Mama, are you awake?” She is so quiet; I can barely hear her. And I know my eyes are open, so it’s not like I’m hearing her from a sleep or an unconscious state. “Baby?” "Shhhh,” she says quietly. So, she’s whispering. “Mama, they took us. We’re in a car trunk.
