Chapter 61.

I stayed in my wolf form as I went from room to room to find the others, but so far apart from a small dirty kitchen and mismatched beds in all the rooms, I hadn’t found anything that would lead me to the nightwolves, or my friends and Leo.I could feel my frustration and worry start to boil as I rushed through each room again, tearing and hauling things around in anger. I flung the beds across the rooms and tore through the kitchen, fear thumping in my heart that he hadn’t even kept them here, he only bought them on the days he wanted to taunt me… Did he have some other secret building he was holding them in? I wanted them in front of me right now! I wanted to get every person out of this dark, dank, disgusting place and out into the daylight and fresh air! They deserved their freedom today, the same freedom as I now had!I panted and growled, sniffing the floor for any of their scents, if they weren’t kept here, at least I know they had been here, and I might be able to track them.

Chapter 62.

The way I had pushed my wolf and myself today was exhilarating. To have gone from a weak, hopeless prisoner, spending her days lying on a dirty floor, to this!.... to who I really am! To be able to breathe in the crisp forest air that had a blissful aroma of blooming wildflowers and earthy mud that squelched beneath my worn down shoes. But so far, I had been the only one able to enjoy our newfound freedom. After getting everyone out of that wretched place, I had reluctantly gone back inside needing to find something to help me move everyone further away. To my shock and disgust, I found a stack of makeshift carts that they had obviously used to bring all the nightwolves here. There were patches of dried blood, claw marks and black fur stuck in between the gaps of the wood planks. I hated to use them again, to lay all their bodies onto the muck and crust, but it was the only way to move them all together.I had spent an entire night in my wolf form pulling them along with the attached

Chapter 63.

I had barely slept the night, constantly listening out for any noises nearby, my mind constantly imagining Zach or what was left of his men watching and waiting to pounce and drag us away again. Then I’d be paranoid anytime Leo’s breaths seemed weaker, or his heart beat slowed. I spent many of the hours resting my head on his chest, needing the reassurance of his heart beat to tell me he was still holding on… he’d be ok…. He had to be! I wrung out the cloth with water and gave it to Dante to bathe Izzy. He was managing to sit up properly today, and he was eager to be able to stand by the end of the day, as he looked over at the stream and craved to cover himself head to toe and lay beneath the water. As he lovingly tended to her, I went from plant to plant, picking handfuls of yarrow, washed it, then crushed it against a flat pebble, intending to use it for everyone’s wounds. I started with Leo as his looked close to infection. One gash after another, I covered each one with the mix

Chapter 64.

I almost cried, and I probably could have if I wasn’t extremely dehydrated, but there it was…. I could see it just in the distance. The gates of Lundberg, just ahead on the trail. Our refuge, our ray of sunshine beckoning me towards it through the grey clouds and heavy rain.My shoes and ankles slopped in the drenched mud, as I had to yank my foot up out of it with each step, dragging the wheels of the carts through it’s slush. My throat rasped and groaned for air as black fuzzy spots distorted my vision.“It’s Lundberg!”. I heard Dante shout from behind me. He had tried to help me with the carts but was still too weak and almost collapsed after only one mile.“Lund….ber… berg”. I tried to reply, but my voice barely came out in a whisper.I knew I was getting closer, but the more I pushed myself along, the further it seemed to feel. My head started to wobble back and forth, flashing in and out of a blank, dark daze. I kept trying to snap out of it and focus on the gates. The gates, ge

Chapter 65.

Wayne took me down a long white washed corridor that led to the back of the hospital, away from any other patient’s.“We wanted to give them all some privacy to recover, and down here they won’t be disturbed by people coming and going”. He told me as he stopped at one of the white doors. He opened it quietly and I stepped in to see all eight wolves sleeping in individual beds. They were all still in their wolf form, and they were so still, they looked almost dead!“How have they been so far?” I asked as I walked past each bed to take a closer look They were all hooked up to medicated drips and bandages had been wrapped around their paws just like the ones on my feet.“The drips are to administer some nutrients and fluids. Apparently they were extremely dehydrated, and severely malnourished. I don’t know what he had been feeding them, but they look as though they haven’t eaten in weeks”. “If he fed them the same as what he gave me, then it was mainly just chunks of spoiled gristly mea

Chapter 66.

“Look at you!”. I cooed as I pulled back to look at her. “Welcome back to the land of the living”. “It’s so good to be back”. She said, managing a light chuckle.“How do you feel?” I asked as Dante pulled up another chair for me to sit on.“Well, we’re all alive and we’re here, so, I couldn’t be happier”. She spoke in a croaky voice. “Thank you for everything”. She said with a tender look as she put her hand on mine.“You don’t need to thank me”. I told her, still feeling like I could have avoided this for all of us.“Raven, you got us out of there!”. She said insistently. “You are the reason why we’re all here and safe now. We owe you our lives”. “Too right!”. Dante chimed in.“You owe me nothing! I should have been able to see past his façade”. I replied remorsefully.“Don’t you even dare start with that”. Izzy spoke firmly. “I knew him longer than you, and I didn’t know who he really was either. So if you’re going to blame yourself for not seeing his true colours, then we’re all

Chapter 67.

After I had seen Izzy and Dante, I went straight to Leo’s room, and I didn’t leave all night. I had pushed the small armchair that was in the corner of his room and positioned it right next to his bed. The nurses made sure I ate, kept telling me to be positive that he’d make a full and healthy recovery and at some point whilst I slept, they had draped a woollen blanket over me.I held his hand, I kissed his cheeks and his forehead, and ran my fingers though his now fresh and clean hair. I kept whispering in his ear that I loved him and that we were all safe, whether he could hear me or not, It was the only thing I could do to not fall apart every time I looked so longingly at his face.I had only left him this morning to take a shower and change into another set of fresh clothes that the omega’s kindly set out on my bed. Whatever they used to wash the clothes with, smelt of Lavender and Pine, like a blossoming meadow in the summer. I inhaled both the top and shorts before I put them o

Chapter 68.

I hadn’t visited Leo for two days, taking my father’s advice to give Caleb and Addison time alone with him and to wrap their heads around how close he had come to dying. Alpha Wayne was kind enough to update me on his recovery, but so far, apart from his wounds slowly healing, he still hadn’t woken up, not even a slight twitch in his fingers or movement from the sounds of anyone’s voices.I scrubbed my hair in the shower, deep in thought. The anger and impatience to end this whole nightmare once and for all. While we were steadily trying to take one day at a time, hiding behind alpha Wayne’s walls, Zach was still out there, and every night that I led in bed alone, my mind would race through all the scenarios of what he could be attempting to do next. He no longer had the nightwolves, which was a huge relief, but I couldn’t see Zach giving up on his revenge, just like that! Did he have a secret army, or another secret hideout? Did he have a plan B or a plan C if things didn’t go as he

Chapter 69.

“Raven, it’s so good to see you up and about”. Nurse Caroline greeted with a kind smile. “Such a vast difference from when I saw you last”. “Thanks Caroline. I’m guessing you saw me when I arrived with a bunch of new patients for you to take care of!” I replied with a chuckle.“I think you took us all by surprise. I did help look after you for the first hour, but then they whisked me away to look after the nightwolves. I couldn’t believe I’ve had the privilege to care for such a legendary breed. I thought I’d never lay eyes on one, and now I’ve seen nine!” She exclaimed, looking a bit star struck. “They’re right this way, follow me”. She added as we walked through Wayne’s palace to his secluded gardens.“Well, I’m just glad they’re in safe hands now, but no wonder they went into hiding for so long, it just seems like someone’s always wanted a piece of them”. “Well, as much as your breed is respected, you’re also feared for your strength and capability of tearing through an entire pa

Chapter 70.

I stood outside of Leo’s room, my hand resting on the door knob as I gulped down the regret and woeful misery of having to leave him behind. I inhaled a deep breath and opened the door, and my heart fell just a little bit more to see him lying so still, so unaware in the hospital bed. Fresh new bandages wrapped around his slow healing wounds, and his cheeks weren’t as sunken and bruised as they had been. His breathing was regular and steady as I sat on the edge of his bed and scooped his hand into mine, fondly admiring each finger as I grazed my thumb across them and brought them up to my lips to leave a lingering kiss and feel the warmth of his skin on mine.As the humid breeze flowed calmly through the open window and the sun lit up the room, I closed my eyes and imagined us walking together outside, hand in hand, laughing and smiling as he pulls me in for a loving kiss. Although we were alone, with Caleb whisking Addison off for breakfast to give me some peace with Leo, oh how I wi
