Chapter 51

Aria's POVAfter riding through winding paths of the hustle and bustle of the town behind us, we had finally arrived at the garden. I placed my palm over my eyes and looked up at the sky. The light of the sun filtered through the canopy of trees that covered up, making the chilly breeze that blew through the woods feel less harsh.I and Ryder had finally come down from our horses and we stood, watching John as he inserted different keys into the locks of the garden gate. It seemed like he had so many keys on him and couldn't identify which opened the lock of the garden gate.He muttered something under his breath though as he picked another key from the bundle in his hands and inserted it into the lock. He wiggled the key from some seconds and smiled after a small click sounded. After finally opening the lock, he moved to another that I didn't know was there."How many locks does this gate have?" I muttered, asking no one in particular as I held my rumbling belly. Ryder seemed to cat

Chapter 52

Elder Parker's POVI stood in the dark corners of the street, watching the people that passed by. Most of them did not notice my presence and I counted it as a good thing. I didn't want them to notice me either.I pulled the hood of the cloak I was wearing over my head and sighed. Shoving my hands into the pocket of my cloak, I fondled with the bracelet inside. The cold feeling of the metal against my skin caused me to shudder as the memories of the previous night came flooding in my head. I pulled out the metal bracelet from my pocket and looked down on it. The blood of the deceased elder Hugh still coated it's body, staining the gold coat on it. I turned the bracelet around in my arm and felt a jump in my stomach upon sighting the insignia of the dead elder."Finally dead, huh," I muttered with a pained chuckle as I ran my thumb over the engraved insignia. "You stupid bastard. You just had to get yourself killed." I gripped tight the bracelet as my eyes stung with the threat of inc

Chapter 53

Aria's POVJohn collected the reins of my horse and pulled it to a small gate that stood close to the end of the garden. He tied the reins there together with that of he and Ryder's horse before quickly rushing back to the fountain where we stood. One by one, he began unpacking the picnic items that he had brought on his horse and began laying them on the lush grass. I made to help him with some but he shook his head, refusing to accept my offer even though someone of them looked way too heavy for him to carry.Luckily, the breeze from earlier still persistent, drying whatever sweat would have formed on the butlers face by now. And surprisingly, his unpacking was much more faster than I had expected. He seemed to have a lot of strength for someone his age. With quick precision, the butler worked out the arrangement of the picnic spread. He unfolded the packed checkered picnic blanket and skillfully spread it across the soft grass making sure that it stayed a few feet away from the fou

Chapter 54

Aria's POVI pressed the tip of my fork on the curred meat in my plate and watched as juicy grease seeped out of it. With satisfaction in my eyes, I shoved the fork into the piece of meat before then plopping it into my mouth."Mmm," I moaned as the flavors in the meat burst in my mouth. For once, I totally forgot about my hunger and slowly savored the delicious taste. "You seem to be enjoying the food much more than I am." I immediately stopped chewing and opened my eyes. Ryder's gaze was on me, his eyes fixated on me as he pressed his fork on his piece of meat. "Tastes real good?""Yeah, it does," I muttered, my cheeks flushing as I put my head down and continued with my food. I cut out a piece of bread from the loaf on my plate and put it's tip on the sauce beside it before putting it in my mouth. As I chewed on the bread, I looked up at Ryder and said, "your cooks really know how to cook." He chuckled. "Much more than I can even.""Nah, nah," Ryder said, shaking his head. "I don'

Chapter 55

Ryder's POVI frowned, my brows knotting together as I dropped the fork in my hand. I stared at Aria, trying to wrap my head around the new information that she had just given me. "Alpha London's father?" I muttered and she hesitantly nodded. "Alpha Tega? Are you sure of what you're talking about?""Well... not really, actually," Aria mumbled. She brought her head face down and began twiddling with her fingers. I could see from her facial expression that she was more scared than uncomfortable telling what she knew."Aria," I called to her, causing her to lift her head up. As her eyes met mine, I stretched my hands out to her and grabbed hers. I stroked her palm softly as I asked her, "what you know, did they tell you not to tell anyone?""No, they didn't," Aria replied rather too quickly. The frown on my face deepened as I saw her reaction. Something really was holding her back from speaking and I wanted to know what it was the more. "I wasn't threatened to keep what I know a secret

Chapter 56

Ryder's POVI dropped my fork and knife and sat up from the picnic blanket where I and Aria sat. I looked over to where John was and found him sleeping under the maple tree close to the gate where he had toed the horses. The old wolf had done a lot so I decided not to bother waking him up."What do you mean 'someone else is here'?" Aria asked as she too stood up from the picnic blanket. She slowly walked up to the fountain and sat down on the stone edge, her eyes darting around the garden with caution. "Is it one of the maidservants back at home or one of the elders?" she asked, fear evident in her voice. "Or is it Ma Levine?""I would know if it was then by their scent," I muttered as my eyes scanned the surrounding, my ears listening for the slightest sound. "The people here aren't one that I know of.""People?!" Aria half-screamed as her eyes darted to me. "There are people here?" I grunted in response to her question. "Maybe... maybe it's the villagers. Maybe they came in to greet

Chapter 57

Aria's POVI felt a strong heat come off the barrel of the gun the cloaked figure pressed against my head. It burnt my skin a little and a strange smell filled the air around me. I didn't need anyone to tell me that the bullet of the gun put against my temple was made of pure silver.I made this known to Ryder, hoping that this new information would cause him to do exactly as they asked him to but from the fire in his eyes, I knew he wasn't going to do so. I was about begging Ryder to listen to the cloaked wolf but something he said caused me to pause on my words, my heart skipping a beat as the sentences poured out of his lips. "You guys are part of the Core Legion," he had said. When he said this, my entire body froze and I immediately stopped struggling. I shifted my trembling gaze from Ryder to John whose facial expression mirrored the same that I had on."Yes, we are," the cloaked man said, a low guttural chuckle escaping his lips. "Isn't it such an irony, King Ryder? The one p

Chapter 58

Aria's POVMy entire body, covered in sand and blood, trembled with a mixture of fear and adrenaline as I slowly stood up from the ground. The strong smell of metal filled the air but I wasn't bothered by any of that. The only thing I could focus on was Ryder and the motionless body that laid beside him."You... you killed him," I mumbled after I finally found my voice. I didn't know if I was to be scared or happy at the sudden turn of events. If not for Ryder's sudden intervention, I would have either been dead or taken captive by the cloaked wolves but still, I never expected Ryder to... kill him.My eyes slowly traveled to where John stood as I noticed from my peripheral vision that there was another pool of blood. My mouth hung open as I sighted the head of the wolf that John had pinned down a few feet away from his headless body."J-John?" I mumbled in disbelief as I looked up at him. He shook his head, the look on his face showing that he wasn't the one who had killed the wolf.

Chapter 59

Aria's POVI frowned, blinking twice as I took two steps backwards from Ryder and the injured wolf. I tried to understand why Ryder had said what he said but it just didn't make any sense to me. "They... they're not part of the Core Legion?" I asked and Ryder nodded. "B-but... but they have the Core Legions insignia on their arms. And they... they said the Core Legion sent them.""Well, they lied," Ryder said with a small sigh as he shoved his hands into his pockets. "The Core Legion is a group that makes sure to keep all of their works confidential. I know these because I have captured a lot of their members. I have tried getting information from them and I have tried using torture to pry what they know from their lips. "Some don't give in and they end up killing themselves to stop the torture. The others though that give in get killed by the Core Legion some way. It's either they die right there at the spot mysteriously or they get assassinated."Ryder gave me a small smile before

Chapter 60

Aria's POVThe high roof of the mansion came into view the moment we rode past the small forest that bordered the town. My palpitating heart increased it's beating rate as we shortened the distance between ourselves and the building. I turned to Ryder to take look at him while making sure that he did not notice my gaze. I could see his jaw harden and the expression on his face, stoic. His eyes were seemed to have been pinned on the road as that was the only thing he looked at. I looked down at his hands and sighted the rope of the mare that the wolf from the garden was atop, clenched between his fingers. I followed the rope to the mare and sighed after seeing the injured wolf. The wound on his leg had healed enough to stop the blood loss but the large gash was still there, exposed to the insects of the forest. This told me that the blade that Ryder had used on him was made out of pure silver. I winced at the thought of such blade tearing my skin. The wolf must be in so much pain.
