CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-ONE

I adjusted my skirt and my hair before knocking.“Come in.” It was faint but it still commanded authority. I took a brief look around the office before settling on him. He looked larger than his desk and it almost made me laugh.“Good morning sir.” I smiled nervously. He gestured to the seat in front of him and I sat in it.“How are you?” His smile was so disarming that I felt myself loosen up.“Good sir. You wanted to see me?” He nodded and pulled out a manila envelope. I was confused but I collected it from him and pulled out its contents. It was a new contract that had been signed between Elise Industries and Marque and Co. I’d heard of Elise Industries somewhere before but I couldn’t remember when or how I’d heard of them.“Why are you showing me this?” Even if I didn’t remember Elise, contracts only existed between big shots here and I would be stupid to take such documents lightly, which was why I was surprised I was being shown the documents in the first place. It was supposed

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-TWO

“You’re so big now.” I kissed Nalini on the cheek. Ugh! She was so cute. She giggled and grabbed onto my shirt tightly.“I hope you have something warmed up for me?” My stomach grumbled and I groaned. I hadn’t eaten all day and I was beyond starving.“I’ve got loaded mashed potatoes with pork chops.” My mouth watered at the thought. Thank God for Aly.She brought a plate to me and I was quick to drop Nalini on the floor.“Sorry dear, auntie’s gotta eat.” I gobbled down the food like I was being chased. Aly simply waited for me to be done eating before going for the jugular.I was cleaning up my mouth when she finally spoke.“What happened between you and Jack?” My head snapped to her, my eyes locked in on hers.“How do you know about that?” She rolled her eyes.“Does it matter?”“Uh, yes? Was it Jack?” I scowled, thinking about what happened at Joe’s.“That’s not the point, Lee. He told me about it ‘cause he’s worried about you.” My scowl only deepened.“Look, I’m gonna be honest abou

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-THREE

For three days, I worked with Judy. My hair was thinly close to coming out of my scalp and it was all because of her. She barely let me breathe. I was working morning till night, going over financial records of Elise Industries from decades ago, decades when everything was filed analogically. I didn’t even bother wearing heels to work. They had my toes and back of my heels blistering. Judy would sit at the table and wait for me to bring all the files and watch me go through each one, record by record. It was amazing how quickly she spun in her chair to pretend to help me out whenever she heard the CEO was coming around. I of course remained mute. I had agreed to working out with her instead of making a formal report about unjust work conditions and it was my punishment. “How far have you gone with the records?” I looked up to find Ryan looking directly at me, as though he knew I was the one doing all the work but I looked at Judy instead. She had the habit of talking over me so thi

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-FOUR

“This isn’t me coming on to you.” I blinked fast, trying to understand his angle and still not look stupid. Had I completely misread the situation wrong and assumed my boss was flirting? My face started to redden in mortification. Oh goodness. Thankfully he was chill and simply chuckled. Funny enough, he never asked about who my fiance was or about the fact that I was engaged. “I think you can leave work for now.” He said, standing up and offering me a hand. “Uh, no sir…” He gave me a stern look and I cleared my throat. “There’s way too much to do and I’m supposed to hand in the report in a few hours.” I quickly looked at the time and saw that I’d spent way too long having a not so meaningful conversation with my boss. “What of Jessica?” I looked up at him and deadpanned. He knew she was off frolicking somewhere and if he didn’t, he certainly wouldn’t hear it from me. “I don’t know. She could be working her ass off at home.” I said bitterly and realised I’d just spoken inappro

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-FIVE

“I didn’t grow up rich.” He held his spoon and I couldn’t help but feel the disdain in his voice. Anyone who grew up poor and got rich could feel possible resentment for the past. I wasn’t ashamed of mine but I wasn’t too happy about it. It was the cause of many problems that I had, especially with my parents so I guess I could relate to him. “But you’re rich now.” I said, staring at half his melted strawberry ice cream. I almost laughed when he ordered it. He just didn’t seem like the kind of person you’d imagine having that as their favorite dessert. “Yeah.” His face quickly morphed into that of happiness and he sighed. “I am.” He wasn’t humble about his wealth. Did he have to be though if he struggled for it? Rising to the top of the ladder at such a young age and coming from nothing, I guess he had every right to not be. “How about you?” My spoon was halfway in my mouth. I had become relaxed after eating my strawberry cheesecake. It tasted nothing like Jared’s but I welcome

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-SIX

“Jared.” I whispered.Ryan turned to look at me with an arched brow.“You know him?” I was going to say ‘you don’t?’ considering the fact that we worked for Jared by protecting some, if not most, of his assets.“Yeah. He’s my fiancee.” Before he could say anything, I opened the car door and ran out to go meet him.I slowed down my pace when I saw that his gaze was fixated on the man whose car I’d just come out of.“Hey.” He snapped his head to me and I almost cowered back. His jaw was locked and he seemed thoroughly pissed.“I called.” I’d expected that the first question he’d ask me was ‘who is that?’“I’m sorry. My phone was on silent. I had a lot of work to do and I didn’t want to be distracted.” It sounded like I considered him a distraction, I men technically, he was but I hadn’t meant it in that way.Jared didn’t say any other thing and I was somewhat scared.Ryan chose that moment to get out of his car and he approached us.“I hear you’re Leah’s fiancee...” Jared seemed to rela

CHAPTER HUNDERED AND SIXTY-SEVEN

I stopped crying at some point and picked up my system. I couldn’t go to bed when Jared needed rest and I didn’t want to disturb him either. Instead, I decided to work on the files. My eyes were puffy and definitely bloodshot but I had to push through. There was too much work and I knew I wasn’t getting any sleep soon. At some point around 3:30am, I stretched my back and a crack sounded. I’d been hunched over for so long that sitting straight didn’t seem natural. I clicked on send and yawned. I actually did it. Hundreds of files and I actually did it. I should’ve felt proud of myself but I couldn’t, not when I felt this guilt within me. “Why aren’t you in bed?” My head snapped up to find Jared standing in the door way. His hair was a bird’s nest and he was bare-chested. His pants hanging low on his hips was almost a distraction if I didn’t remember that he was mad at me. “I… uh… I had work to do and you needed to rest. I didn’t want to disturb your sleep.” I closed the lid of my la

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SIXTY-EIGHT

I’d fallen asleep in the study after locking myself up and cried myself into exhaustion. I had also managed to wake up extremely late. The house was empty by the time I was leaving but the with the coldness I felt oozing out of the house, Jared had been gone for a long time. The back of my eyes pricked with pain but I had no tears left in me to cry. I deserved whatever I got. I’d hurt Jared and made him feel less of the beautiful person that he was. I hunched my bag over my shoulders and hurried to work. The drive to work was the fastest, yet slowest I’d ever encountered in my entire life. At each traffic stop, I couldn’t help but remember the hurt in his eyes, the pain he felt. The blare of a horn revived me out of my stupor and I continued driving. Twice, I almost caused an accident but I finally made it.I was almost 20 minutes late but I couldn’t care less at that point. Something in me had broken last night and all I wasn’t sure I’d ever get it back.“You’re late!” Judy shouted i

I frowned. I’d probably misheard them. I pushed the door open and I went in. “Here it is.” I tried to look at them as I opened my system for use. Judy scowled at me while Ryan seemed to not have any expression on his face. I turned my focus to finding the email I’d sent. I’d definitely misheard them. Coffee with a muddled up brain was not the best combination, surely. Surprisingly enough, the email had remained unsent in my draft. Had I been so distracted last night that I assumed I sent what I didn’t? “Oh… I’m sorry sir. I had no idea it wasn’t sent.” I massaged the bridge of my nose, feeling slightly sorry. “Are you okay?” He looked at me with concern and I gave him a tight smile. ”Yes sir.” I didn’t need a pity party. He looked at me for the longest time before finally looking away and taking a look at the file before him. After a couple minutes, he nodded his head in approval. “This is good.” He smiled at me but I didn’t need his compliments. My lips remained flat and itc

CHAPTER HUNDRED AND SEVENTY

The incessant ringing of my phone pulled me out of my sleep. I groaned as I picked it up. Without looking at the caller ID, I answered. “Hello?” “Where the hell have you been?” I opened one eye and saw that everywhere was still dark. I checked the time on my phone and scowled. “It’s 3am for crying out loud.” “Forgive me for worrying about you. I’ve been calling for a long time and you didn’t come home. I had every right to think something had happened.” I groaned again and sat up. I’d forgotten I’d hurt my shoulders earlier and tried to rest on the arm. “Fuck!” I cursed when the pain travelled straight up my brain. “What is it?” Aly asked, concern lacing her tone. “Nothing.” I gritted my teeth. “Is that why you called? I’m fine Aly.” “You don’t sound fine to me. Where the hell are you?” “How do you know I didn’t come home?” My face scrunched up in confusion and I could hear her exasperated sigh. “I came looking for you. When I didn’t find you at home, I waited. I waited a l
