CHAPTER 151

The party was done; the cake was eaten, presents were opened, and the guests were gone. Abby had crashed and was in bed, Barry had gone up to his room to shower and Heather was nowhere to be found. Becky wiped the kitchen over and stacked the last of the dishes into the dishwasher, closing the door and pressing the ‘on’ button. It was dark outside and she was exhausted. The party had been wonderful, apart from a couple of hiccups that could all be laid at the feet of Heather, and Abby had enjoyed herself. A whining and scratching at the laundry door reminded her they still hadn’t worked out what to do with the puppy. Barry had sent one of his friends out to the local shop to pick up some dry food for the poor thing, but they still didn’t have a bowl or a bed for him. Becky opened the door and sat down on the ground with him as he jumped all over her and licked her. He really was a gorgeous little thing…oops, she was a really gorgeous little thing. Freddie was a girl, which made her

CHAPTER 152

“Becky?” he asked the darkness while he waited for his eyes to adjust. “No,” a breathy response came from the direction of his bed. “Heather,” he said, his teeth clenched, “what the hell are you doing in my room?” “I thought we could finish what we started the other night,” she said. “We didn’t start anything the other night,” he growled. “I’ve told you I’m not interested. There is nothing between us anymore Heather. You are only in my house because of Abby and when that is sorted, you’re out of here. I have no intention of getting into bed with you - literally or figuratively.” “Come on Barry, one night, for old time’s sake.” “Are you fucking kidding me?” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “Why on earth would I want that? You left me, Heather, you cheated on me.” “Aren’t you ever going to get over that?” she asked, and he heard the exasperation in her voice. “It was five years ago, Barry, grow up.” “You are the one who needs to grow up. You are making a fool of you

CHAPTER 153

Becky hadn’t slept. She’d packed up her room, cried into her pillow, and then gave herself a stern talking to. She was doing the right thing, even if it felt like she was ripping her own heart out. Abby would get over her and in a couple of months she probably wouldn’t even remember Becky. Barry wouldn’t even miss her, not with Heather back in his life and his bed. She had to do this for herself, she needed to put herself first for a change. As the first rays of sun lit the room, she dried her tears, showered and dressed, and sat down at the small desk to write her resignation letter. She managed to keep the tears at bay and then when she was done, she folded it and slipped it into an envelope, scrawling ‘Barry’ across the front. She carried her bags down to the foyer and called for a cab. She left the letter and the keys to the car on the kitchen counter and then took one last look around the house before going up to Abby’s room. She watched the little girl sleep for a moment bef

CHAPTER 154

Abby opened her eyes slowly and yawned. The house was quiet, and she took a moment to remember everything that had happened the day before. It had been her birthday party, and it had been the best day of her life. With a smile on her face, she got out of bed and stretched. She remembered Becky coming in early and telling her she had to go away for a while, but that was okay because Becky always came back. She walked over to her closet and opened the door. If Becky wasn’t here to dress her, she would have to dress herself. It’s not that she couldn't do it, just that she had never done it all on her own before. And she had never gotten to choose what she was going to wear. Sometimes she tried to give Becky suggestions, but more often than not, Becky would decide to dress her in different clothes. But not today, today she got to choose. Abby looked into the closet and her eyes spied the long pink tutu that was her favorite thing in the world to wear. She pulled it from its hanger and

CHAPTER 155

She knew her mummy was sleeping in there now and she remembered that sometimes her other daddy would sleep in the same bed, so she quietly opened the door and peeked in. She saw mummy in the bed, her mouth open and a loud snore coming out of her and she had to cover her mouth so she didn’t giggle too loudly and wake her up. Mummy could be grumpy in the mornings, so best to let her sleep. She looked on the other side of the bed wondering if her daddy was there, but the pillow was bare. She closed the door and went back to the stairs. She walked down them slowly, trying to think of where else he could be and then she remembered his office. Her daddy liked to get up early and sometimes he would go and work in his office for a while before joining them for breakfast. She skipped down the hall to the office and opened the door. It was dark, but she could see that her daddy was asleep on the couch. He was lying on his back with his mouth open, but he wasn’t snoring, thank goodness. She re

CHAPTER 156

“Well she’s not here and you need to get your lazy fucking arse out of bed and look after your daughter and that goddamned puppy so I can find her and beg her to come back.” “Why should I do that?” “Because if you are not downstairs in ten minutes, I am kicking your sorry arse out of this house and you can kiss goodbye the money you are extorting out of me in the custody agreement.” He left the room, slamming the door and crossing to the playroom door. He opened the door cautiously, hoping against hope that Becky had only gone out on an errand and not left. But when he looked into the room, his fears were confirmed. She’d left, taking all her things with her. Dammit all to hell! He should have talked to her last night instead of drinking himself into oblivion. He was a damned idiot for not telling her how he felt earlier. Now she was gone and he had no idea how to contact her. He pulled out his phone and tried calling her although he already knew she wouldn’t answer. When

CHAPTER 157

“I’m meeting a friend for a drink,” she said to her mother as she walked out of the room. “Okay honey,” her mum said, giving her a big smile. “You look great.” Becky tried to smile back. “Thanks,” she said and grabbed her purse, waving over her shoulder as she left the suite and headed to the elevator. She was on her second lemon drop when Cassie sat down at the bar beside her. She ordered a vodka cranberry and then turned to eye Becky. “Okay, spill,” she said. Becky sighed. “I’m such an idiot,” she said, “I broke the cardinal rule.” “What’s that?” Cassie thanked the bartender as he slid her drink across the bar and took a sip. “Don’t sleep with the boss. Or more accurately, don’t fall for the boss.” Cassie covered her hand with hers, “Oh, honey,” she said, “you’re in love with Barry?” “I’m such a cliché,” Becky said, draining her glass. “But, have you seen him? You know the first time I saw him he was shirtless. He opened the door shirtles

fine, Barry,” Cassie said. “But she doesn’t want to see me.” He heard her sigh through the phone. “It’s complicated,” she said. “Cassie—” “Look, I know, okay, I know. I tried my best to get her to call you, but she kept saying you need to read the letter and—” Cassie paused and Barry very nearly threw his phone at the wall. “And?” “Look, I promised her I wouldn’t break her confidence, but I think you need to know that Heather was lying to you. Becky never slept with Adam.” He hissed out a breath, relieved beyond words to hear that. “There’s more there, more to that story, but it’s not my place to tell you. Read the letter.” “So where is she?” he said. “She’s staying with her mother for a while.” “She’s with her mother?” “I knew that,” Abby said, and he looked down at her. “What did you say, Abby?” “Becky told me she was going to stay with her mummy for a while,” Abby answered with a roll of her eyes, as only a five-year-old could. “Why didn’t you tell Dad

CHAPTER 159

Every light in the house was blaring when Barry pulled into the driveway. His house looked like a fucking Christmas tree, which didn’t bode well for the occupants. He took a couple of deep breaths before getting out of the car and walking up the stairs. The front door was unlocked and when he swung it open, noise assaulted him. He took off his jacket and slung it over the bench in the entryway before making his way into the front sitting room. The stereo was on and Abby and Freddie were running around screeching and barking, and neither of them saw him standing there. He stalked over and turned off the stereo and both child and dog froze, looking at him in surprise. He took in Abby’s bedraggled appearance and surmised that Heather hadn’t bathed her as yet. “Where’s mummy?” he asked, trying really hard to keep his voice pleasant. Abby shrugged. “Have you had your dinner?” he asked, feeling his control begin to fracture. “I had Fruit Loops,” she said and started running around i

CHAPTER 160

The beep from the microwave interrupted his search, and he headed back to the kitchen to eat. He sat at the bench with a beer and his dinner and took a few minutes to decompress. He couldn’t get out of work the next day, but he could make sure to be home early so that a repeat of tonight didn’t happen. Mrs. Garrett would be there by seven and if he left straight away, he could get some work done before the meeting and then come home straight after. He would tell Patricia to cancel the rest of his week and he would work from home. Hopefully, by Friday the custody papers would be signed and he could finally be rid of Heather and her toxic influence. He finished his meal but was still too keyed up to sleep so he headed for his office for a couple hours of work. After ninety minutes, he gave up trying to concentrate. The words that Abby had hurled at him hurt. He knew she didn’t really mean them and that kids told their parents all the time they hated them, but it didn’t make it hurt an
