Chapter Seventy-One: Alex

“Are you sure this is going to work?” Alpha Stephen asks once I lay out my plan.“I’m sure.”“Okay, what do we need?”“Magnesium, hot water, and hope.”“This is odd. Have any of you ever heard of a vampire being weakened by magnesium? It’s just a metal for Goddess’ sake!” Ray interjects.“Well, we are weakened by silver, so I don’t think it’s that far-fetched,” Colin argues. “Where would we even find magnesium this late in the day?”“The book was sitting in a box full of magnesium disks.”“I don’t know about this,” Ray says. “This is too convenient.” “I agree,” Colin replies. “But we can’t afford to no

Chapter Seventy-Two: Alex

Howls and war cries break through the crowd as Colin steps down. The warriors stand and make their way outside. Peyton hugs Claire and Ryker one last time before helping them into the safe room. Stephen ushers his crying mate in there as well. It’s going to be hell for them to stay here while their mates are out there risking their lives. I notice Thomas is quieter than normal. He walks Val to the room. She has tears in her eyes, but she doesn’t acknowledge his existence as she steps inside. I want to feel sorry for him, but I can’t find it in me. He made his choice and now he has to learn how real the consequences can be. I find myself conflicted as the door closes. A part of me wants Amber in that room, protected and safe from the carnage that is about to take place. Another part of me knows that she’s safest with me and I don’t want her out of my sight. I hope this is the last time we have to do like this, but something tells me it won’t be. Our

A scream pierces my ears. Holly. She lays over Jake’s bleeding body. A blonde vampire stands over her, ready to drill her talons into her body. She jumps onto his body, using it to propel towards our friends.. She grabs the vampire's long, pale strands in her mouth. Yanking with all her strength until the woman drops dead where she stood. Her head rolls near Jake’s side. Vera nudges Holly to get up and get both of them to safety. We watch them walk towards the tent. I hope they’re okay. Before I can focus again, Zeke’s howls ring out. Vera and I both feel a sharp pain. He’s hurt. Vera’s eyes scan the field for him. He’s lying on the other side. A vampire floats above him. Vera takes off, but her path is blocked by a triad of ticks. They circle us, thei

Chapter Seventy-Four: Amber

Everywhere I look, bodies clutter the ground. Our warriors fell to a violent death. At least most of the vampires joined them. I glance at the last two standing. Lyle and another. I recognize him from my time at the castle, but his name escapes me. Lyle stares back at me with a hint of excited fury in his eyes.“Thank you for clearing the air, Pet. It’s much easier to drain your friends when I can see them. Who should I start with?”“Why don’t you start with me and see how far you get?”“Hmm. I’d rather save the best for last. I could start with the bitch that Thaddeus betrayed me for or maybe the Luna would like to join her friend.”“Witches make good meals too, my Lord.” The blonde vampire next to him says.“You’re right, Levi. They would be fantastic appetizer

Chapter Seventy-Five: Amber

“Is something wrong?” The sound of my voice startles him. “How?” “Doesn’t feel good to have someone in your head, does it?” “This doesn’t make sense. You’re weak, you can’t get into my head.” “I’ve survived your attacks how many times now and you’re still convinced it’s me who is weak? If you were half the vampire you thought you were, I’d have been dead a long time ago.” My voice echoes through his mind. He shakes his head, trying to rid it of me. But it’s too late. His rampant thoughts of victory begin to take a dark shape. I can’t control the mind like he can, but I can manipulate it to turn against him. I just need to find the memory he’s most connected with. Satisfaction washes over me as I search through his mind. After all this man has done to m

Chapter Seventy-Six: Amber

The doorknob rests in my trembling hand. I’m trying to be brave, but I also know that what’s behind this door will forever be carved into my soul. I’m not ready to see this. But what choice do I have? I look back at everyone. I consider changing my mind about doing this alone, but I need to. I keep telling myself it’s because I need to show strength but really, I just don’t want anyone to see me breakdown. I take a deep breath and summon all the courage I can. The door opens with no sound.Alex lies on a hospital bed in the middle of the room. His skin as white as the sheets that cover him. All I can do is stare. He looks so broken. I can’t make sense of all this. Somewhere inside of me, I know this is my fault. If I had just stayed away from him, he wouldn’t be lying here. I reach out to stroke his hand. Pleasurable sparks comfort my skin, rupturing my heart in the process. All the guilt I repressed is swallowi

Chapter Seventy-Seven: Amber

When I wake, it’s dark out. I guess the fighting and worrying took more from me than I thought. My hands fumble around until landing on the lamp and switching it on. The hairs on the back of my neck stand when I realize that Alex isn’t in his bed. My movements turn frantic. I’m ready to bolt out the door and find a doctor when I hear the bathroom door open.“Hey, gorgeous. Leaving already?”The smooth voice coats my soul in peace. I turn around and get lost in an emerald sea. Joy colors my face and I close the gap between us in record time. Even with one arm confined to a sling, his warm embrace is the home I’ve been missing.“No tears, princess.”“I was so scared that I lost you. Dr. Davis said he didn’t know if you’d wake up or walk again.”“That man should’ve

Chapter Seventy-Eight: Alex

The second the words came out of Diana’s mouth, I knew Amber was going to leave. No matter how much she tries to hide it, I know she cares what these people think. It pisses me off. I can see how hard she’s trying to be better, to make amends, but everyone still treats her badly. Either these people are fucking blind, or they’ve written her off without caring if she changes.“Get out.”“Excuse me, Gamma?”“Oh right, I forgot that you’re an idiot. Let me make it simple for you. Get the fuck out of my hospital room. I don’t want you anywhere near me or Amber. You’ll be lucky if I don’t get Alpha to make you leave the pack.”Tears well up in Diana’s eyes. The agitation filling my veins leaves little room to worry if I’m going too far. She exits my room without another word.

Chapter Seventy-Nine: Alex

“How is Paige?”“Not good. She’s been quiet, almost catatonic since losing Val. She’s hardly eating and when she does eat, she can’t keep it down. I think the grief is making her sick. I don’t know how to help her, and she’s refusing to see a doctor. I’m worried.”“Just be with her. Maybe you can’t fix this, but you can help her carry the burden.” The car comes to a halt outside Amber’s house. The yellow wood almost looks rejuvenated underneath the bright sky. I inhale before exiting the car. Somehow, even though the fanged evil is defeated, I don’t feel at ease. After all we’ve been through, I just want to start my life with my mate. I want to watch the sunset with her every night. I want to wake up next to her every day. But that feels so far away.“Honey, I’m home.”

Chapter Eighty: Alex

I pull her into my chest, placing a kiss on the top of her head. My phone rings breaking the comfortable silence around us. “Hello?” I answer. “Hey, can you and Amber come to the packhouse, and we’ll talk to Harrison here?” Colin asks. “I already brought Peyton up to speed and sent him to pick up Harrison.” “Didn’t I suggest that from the start?” “Whatever asshole, just get here.” “As you wish, Alpha.” I laugh. Colin grumbles something before hanging up. “Change of plans, we’re eating at the packhouse. I’ve got to get up there and talk to Harrison.” “You’re wasting no time getting back to work.” “The quicker I deal with this, the quic
