Back In Beoutown

*Ainslee*The next few days are just the same. At night, we run through the darkness on tired limbs. During the day, we find a place to lie together in a cave or other shelter, usually taking solace in one another’s arms. I’m fairly certain we’ve lost, or at least put a good deal of distance between, our pursuers. I’m exhausted by the time we reach Longclaw lands. My feet are raw. I’m covered in cuts and scrapes from thorns and sharp rocks. I’m ready to find someone I know in my home village and collapse for the night.Rafe isn’t nearly as torn up as I am, though he is tired. His marble-like physique protected him from most of the snarls that bit into my skin. “We’re almost there,” Rafe says, patting me on the shoulder encouragingly. I manage a growl of acknowledgement, but that’s all I can do as I continue to trudge forward. When we enter Beoutown, the moon is just starting to set. We’re met on the road into the village by a small pack of wolves.I recognize my friend from the cull

Shifter Secrets

*Rafe*I should’ve let her sleep more, but I couldn’t help it. Lying in a nice, soft bed with Ainslee made her impossible to resist. Especially since she was naked.I think the desperation of our situation is making me more ravenous than usual, though Ainslee always whets my appetite. There is just something in her scent, the taste of her skin, that has me addicted. We sleep all day and into the next evening. Nightfall comes too soon, and I kiss Ainslee awake, stroking her cheek gently. “It’s time, my love.”Ainslee smacks me with her pillow. “Oh no you don’t! I’ve only been sleeping for an hour or two.”I laugh and yank the pillow out of her hands, tossing it aside. “While I’d like very much to let you keep sleeping, the sun has gone down. We do have to reach Warfang as soon as possible.”Ainslee looks out the window at the rising moon and groans. “Already? All right.”Her delicious, naked body slides out of bed, and I ogle her, pretending to stretch and yawn.“We have to go.” Ainsle

Troubling Times

*Ainslee*Rafe turns to me in shock, and I can’t blame him. I probably should have told him sooner. “You’re pregnant?!” he yelps.“Uhm, well… yes…” I admit, hugging my stomach.“You two have a lot to talk about,” my cousin, Karl, chuckles. “Might I suggest we all turn in for the evening? I’ve already told you I will send my troops. I gave my word, after all. You just need to hold up your end.”“O-Of course,” Rafe stammers, still looking shocked.Karl nods to some servants standing subtly by the receiving room doors. “Take them to the crimson room. We’ll talk more over breakfast.”“Yes. Over breakfast…” Rafe replies to Karl though his eyes are completely zeroed in on me.“Don’t keep her up too late. She needs to rest for the sake of the child, after all,” Karl reminds Rafe with a wink. Then he walks out of the receiving room in a swirl of robes.“Maybe we should go take a bath?” I squeak.“Mhm. Or maybe ‘we’ should tell Rafe why I didn’t know you were pregnant.” Rafe narrows his eyes a

Getting It All Straight

*Rafe*Ainslee is still sleeping when I roll off the intricately carved loveseat. While it may look pretty, it did not make for a good night’s rest.I stand over Ainslee’s sleeping form for several minutes, contemplating this new chapter I wasn’t expecting in our life. I’m not going to wake her up, I decide. The minute I open my mouth, I know I’ll say something stupid, or at least something she’ll take the wrong way, and we’ll be fighting again. No, I need to sort myself out before talking to her about the baby again.Unfortunately, I also need to tackle a war in my kingdom, and that has to take priority. I lean down and kiss Ainslee’s forehead, then tuck the covers more securely around her before heading out of the crimson room to find Alpha King Striker.Karl, I remind myself. I need to start thinking of him as Karl. I’m marrying his cousin, after all.The king is at breakfast, a helpful servant tells me, and even takes me to the long hall with towering stained glass windows depicti

A Fang and a Prayer

*Ainslee*‘Regardless of any trouble between the two of you, you WILL marry my cousin,’ plays repeatedly in my head as I stumble down the hall and out of the packhouse.Goddess, now that I am pregnant with a hybrid child, Rafe’s own child, he doesn’t want me anymore?Tears stream down my cheeks. I have to get away. I just have to.Wolf shifters part in surprise as I pass the surrounding houses and shops. I’m a sobbing mess and no one wants to be around that.Maybe they can smell I’m pregnant with a vampire’s baby and don’t want to be around that, either.I see a bookshop and dart inside. It will at least be quiet there.Blessedly, I am the only one in the shop. The little bell over the door rings as I close it behind me, and the shopkeeper pops his head up over a stack of books.“Oh dear me,” he says, raising bushy gray eyebrows. “You must be Luna Queen Ainslee Bleiz. What on earth is the matter, Your Majesty?”I hiccup and shake my head, hunkering down on a chair in a little nook of

A Chance to Apologize

*Rafe*I can’t find Ainslee. I can’t find her anywhere.I scour the packhouse, frantic, poking my head into public and private places. I surprise servants and nobles. I get the impression Karl has called the Alphas in from their various regions and they are beginning to arrive. My suspicion is confirmed when I push past the guards and throw open the doors to the receiving room. Karl is on his throne with Alphas sitting in a half circle around him. Some chairs are empty. I expect some Alphas are coming a long way and haven’t arrived yet.“Rafe?” Karl says, startled from whatever they were talking about.“I can’t find Ainslee.” I don’t care who hears it or how they judge me. I’ve lost my love and my queen. “I can’t find her anywhere.”“Oh.” Karl looks at the other Alphas, who are all suddenly very absorbed in the woodwork. Karl rises from his throne and walks through the circle of Alphas to come to my side.“You know where she is,” I accuse him as soon as I can see his face up close.Ka

We Are Mates

*Rafe*Everyone is staring at me. I can feel their eyes on the back of my head.. Everyone’s but Ainslee.Ainslee has her head pressed to the prayer rail at the feet of an enormous statue of the Moon Goddess. She’s crying, her chest heaving with sobs. I can tell by the rasp in her breathing that she’s been crying this way for some time.It seems strange to see her cry. This isn’t the same woman who screamed at me over bread in the roadway. She has changed. We have all changed.I go to her, ignoring everyone, barely hearing the hiss of the priestesses behind me. From the corner of my eye, I can see all the priestesses surrounding the High Priestess. They’re arguing with her. I feel for her, I do, but she also strikes me as the kind of woman who doesn’t need defending, even from a mob of protesting priestesses. Kind of like my Ainslee. At the feet of the Goddess, I stand over Ainslee. My shadow falls over her in the flickering candlelight, and she looks up slowly. Her face is streaked w

The Handfasting Ceremony

*Ainslee*I suppose some people might think it strange to lay on the chest of a man who doesn’t have to breathe and is a few degrees cooler than you are. But I’m mated to him so I don’t really mind. I’m getting used to it.Rafe is sleeping soundly while I just watch him in the early dawn hours. His cheeks are cool like marble. I ran my palm over one of them, remembering how good it feels to have his cheeks pressed against my thighs. I shiver. There’s something to be said for older, more mature, more experienced men.Not that I’ll ever have anyone else to make the comparison. I’m just assuming.Rafe nips my fingertips on my second pass, and I grin as he yawns and runs his fingers through my hair. “You’re staring.”“Can’t help it,” I reply. “You’re breathtaking.”Rafe chuckles and kisses me soundly. “We never did get you fed,” he says with concern, trailing firm fingertips over my belly.“I wouldn’t say that…” I tease him.“That is not food.” But Rafe laughs just the same. He pulls the

A Bit Woozy

*Rafe*“How do we make it official in Shadowglade?” I say, frowning in confusion at Karl. “We have handfastings in Shadowglade.”“Yes, but that’s not the kind of ceremony King Axel and my cousin were going to have,” Karl points out. “I want to make sure your vampire nobles also respect your marriage.”The vampire nobles are bastards. I’m surprised Karl knows this. Then again, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. If I’ve learned anything while I’ve been in Warfang, it’s that Karl knows everything.I look at Ainslee. Would the vampire nobles spit on our marriage because it was only a simple handfasting?“Anyone have a glass?” I ask cautiously. “And… maybe a doctor who can…”Ainslee is the only wolf shifter who doesn’t wrinkle her nose.“So, we need to have some sort of surgical procedure to mate you properly?” Karl hazards.“No, not a surgical… I just need… we need to share a cup of blood… and at King Axel’s wedding it was going to be hers,” I explain.“You’re going to have a wolf shifter dr

Honeymoon Bliss

*Ainslee* Despite our teasing, I do feel a bit woozy. But my senses sharpen when Rafe enters me with his tongue. “Oh Goddess!” I gasp, wrapping my legs around his shoulders and tangling my fingers in his hair. “Rafe!” “Mm-hmm,” Rafe hums against my core. I don’t think he’s had quite enough of tasting me, like my blood was not enough. ‘Not nearly enough,’ Rafe says in my mind and I remember what Edmund said about leaking. “Everyone in Warfang is going to know what we’re doing,” I groan. But I don’t stop Rafe. How can I? His clever tongue and lips just feel too good. ‘Not everyone in Warfang. Maybe everyone in the capital,’ Rafe teases me. I can feel the heat of his desire over our connection and it fans the flames of mine. “You’re mean,” I moan, bucking my hips as my body starts to burn all over. ‘You like it.’ Rafe gives me a mental smile. He also smiles down below, I can feel it. I grip his hair. “Don’t stop!” ‘Wasn’t going to. Easy, my Queen. Ouch,’ Rafe says, detangling my
