"Over here," an unfamiliar woman led me toward the office I already knew too well. A wave of guilt passed through me when I realized the previous receptionist had lost her job because of me. I didn't protest, following her like sheep. This woman was different in every way. She was a brunette and much shorter than the other one. She was not smiling and she had an air around her that made me uncomfortable. I didn't also speak because I didn't want anything that would make Davis fire any other person on my account again. "Go to the last room down this hall and knock," she said, pointing down the hallway to Davis' office. "He has company at the moment, but he specifically requested you be brought to his office immediately, so just…" Before she could round off the list of her instructions, we heard the loud angry voice of Davis thunder all the way from his office. She froze beside me, fear instantly washing over her. Inasmuch as she was different from the previous receptionist, they bo

I hated the smug look on his face. I hated the fact that he had all the power and could do whatever he pleased. I hated the fact that there was nothing I could do but acquiesce to his demands. "Your training will kickstart officially from tomorrow, so get prepared," he said, going back to his computer and dismissing me. I didn't know what to do with my hands. I couldn't complain. He knew I needed this job and that was why he was doing this. He said I was impatient. I'd show him how wrong he was. With a smile on my face I hoped looked natural, and I nodded. "Sure. I can't wait." He simply waved me away before speaking into the intercom. "Bring in my next guest." How rude! "Should I leave or…?" I asked, hating this feeling. There was a knock on the door, interrupting me. Davis shut the laptop down, relaxed lower into his seat, and adjusted his tie. "Come in," he said, his eyes beaming. A beautiful woman who looked specifically handcrafted by god himself strutted into the r

Davis was just back, but he had already made it his duty to push me to my limit. I wouldn't let him do that. Pushing my unfinished plate of food to the side, I stood up to leave, but a steady hand on my shoulder pushed me back down. "You're not going anywhere. I said you will eat and eat, you will," he said with a sharp tone that left no room for objection. Turning to Gloria he said, "Take this plate and get her dessert." He sat down beside me when Natalie and Gloria both left to do as he asked. I felt uncomfortable but didn't say anything. When the food came, I tried my best not to even look at it even though it smelt so divine. It was going to be difficult to act like I didn't want to eat it. "You may leave. Both of you," he said to them. "And don't come back unless I specifically ask you to." They were more than eager to leave and a part of me wished I could go with them. Being alone with Davis wasn't on my list of things I looked forward to doing that evening. I looked stra

The effrontery. How dare he order me like that? But why couldn't I stop thinking about him? "Earth to Cassie," Kayden said, waving a hand at me. "Sorry," I sighed, sitting closer to him. "I've been preoccupied with a lot of things." "Like what," he asked, resting a hand on my thigh. "You can tell me. I don't have anything better to do here. I like hearing you talk." He liked hearing me talk. But how could I tell him I was thinking about my husband? "I'm just bothered with work," I said instead, lifting his hand and resting my chin on it. This felt right. He didn't say anything for a few moments but stared at me with that look of his that made me feel immediately secure. "The doctor told me I'll soon be discharged." "Oh my god. That's great news!" I exclaimed, hugging him. I was happy he would be free to leave, but one fact nagged at us both. His memory. "We'll figure it out," he said, reading my thoughts. "I already feel so close to you even without it." "We were meant

I kept to myself through most of the journey which was much longer than our drive to Davis' office usually was. I probably shouldn't have asked the nurse to tell Kayden I'd be back in twenty minutes. I didn't want him to wait for too long. My mind was preoccupied with him. Who had given him an offer? What was the offer even about and why had he been chosen even with his memory problems? Everything seemed sketchy to me but I was probably not on board simply because he would be taken away from me. I was going to tell him exactly what I thought. He was my responsibility and I wouldn't sit idly and watch someone take advantage of my man. I refused to speak to Solomon, not even asking questions when he took suspicious-looking turns and kept going deeper into unfamiliar paths. Davis had asked to see me privately, but this wasn't what I had imagined. When we kept going for over forty-five minutes with no signs of stopping, I had to speak up. "Where exactly are we going to?" I asked, look

Davis was sitting in front of me at the dining table, taking his dinner one spoon at a time. The atmosphere was charged, the deafening silence only making things worse. If looks could kill, Davis would have been dead from my lethal and unwavering glare. The only sound in the room was the occasional low chewing sound from Davis who pretended to be oblivious to my fury. My food remained untouched, the only appetite I had being murder. Kayden was gone, and it was all because of this man who had managed to turn my entire life upside down in less than two months of being in it. I was so mad I couldn't speak. I didn't even know what I would say. I didn't understand why. Why he was so obsessed with ruining my happiness? He had nothing to gain at this point. It was now plain wickedness than anything. "Gloria," he said, clearing his throat, "take out her plate and get dessert. It appears she no longer has an appetite." Gloria nodded, cleared my plate, and started to leave. "If you come

"Where do you think you're going?" Davis asked me as I packed a few things into a big bag. I didn't answer. "Look, I know you're mad but it's already just an hour until midnight. You can't possibly leave this house now," he said, standing at the door. "You must be delusional to think I'll stay one second more in this cursed house and with you," I barked. "I almost died here. My worst moments ever have happened in this house but I foolishly remained here. This is the last straw. I think this has been a game to you to see how far you can push me. You win. I'm leaving." He was by my side in a second, looking down at me with an expression that was a mixture of anger and concern. "None of this is a freaking game. I removed him for good reason." "What reason? At least tell me!" I yelled. His jaw twitched. "You won't understand." "Again with that," I said giving up and going back to putting the basic things I needed in the bag. I didn't know where I would go, but anywhere was bette

"No, you may not," I said curtly, hoping she would see I wasn't in the mood and leave me alone. She didn't. "It's not even going to take long," she said, coming up the stairs to me and placing a small mic by her mouth and giving me another one. "I said no," turning fully to her so she would see I really didn't want to. "Look. It's only just gonna take like ten minutes," she continued, her demure expression disappearing and a determined expression replacing it. It was a mask she'd used to get me. "There are so many questions we've been asking Davis Monroe but he has simply ignored us. We've been hoping to find you so we could remedy that. First of all, how did you get him to settle down with you? No woman has been able to achieve that, not even Vera, his girlfriend, I mean ex-girlfriend, although there are some speculations. Or maybe I should ask first what you're doing in this hotel? Are you here to meet another man? Or do you have problems with Davis? Do tell us. This is so gonn

I couldn't believe my ears. "What?" He sighed, rubbing his eyes with the tips of his fingers to show he was tired of me. "You don't always have to act so clueless or surprised all the time. You got the job. Go upstairs, shower if you haven't, and dress like someone who's going to work. All of that should take you less than ten minutes." Only Davis could make getting a job sound so condescending. I did as he asked, going upstairs. The fact that he was giving me a job now after everything he had put me through was quite hurtful. I didn't want to dwell on the fact that he only gave me the job because I had agreed to let him be in charge of me. That was already a sign of how demanding and infuriating the job would be. I dressed up within five minutes but the stubborn part of me wanted to test him. I remained on the bed, pressing my phone and watching as each minute passed. After ten minutes, I was beginning to feel jittery at my disobedience but I forced myself to remain calm, remin

"The job is not difficult. You just need to be ready to do as he says. Have you ever held a job similar to this one?" Quinn asked me after we entered his office. How could I tell him I'd never held a job before? "Not really," I answered vaguely. "What sort of things will I be doing exactly?" "You'll schedule most of his appointments and brief him on them, you'll manage his calendar and prepare his travel appointments, handle his phone calls and correspondence, and maintain his files," he said like he was reciting something from a book and I penned everything down. "Anything else?" I asked, knowing Davis would find a way to make this seemingly easy job difficult for me and wanting to be prepared beforehand. "Hmm, there is something," Quinn said, looking up and down at me in a way that made me uncomfortable, before shaking his head. "But you're not his type. You'll just schedule those kinds of appointments for him." Oh. I wish I didn't immediately understand what he was implying.
