Chapter 21: The mate

Jasper opened the doors for us the moment we got home and the moment he saw me, he had an almost relieved look on his face. He expressed his relief before enthusiastically attempting to announce our arrival. But I urged Jasper to stay silent and I advised Dante not to join us. He was reluctant at first, but I tried to rationalise it to him. I’d seen the way Nicholas had reacted to my bruised knuckles the first time I had arrived. There was no doubt that he’d end Dante within a second, no questions asked. And so, after we had decided not to tell Nicholas anything regarding Wolfsbane or Kiyan and Dante’s involvement in the organisation, he left. It didn’t take long for Nicholas to appear into the foyer. He had his car keys in his hand and a determined look in his eyes. But the moment he saw me, he paused briefly and almost instinctively tried to wear that calm mask again. It vanished almost as soon as he forced its appearance. His eyebrows then furrowed deeply, and he came right towards

Chapter 22: Lip service

Kiyan I barely made it through the door of the grand entrance before my sister grabbed my arm and tugged at it hard, stopping me from moving any further. I turned towards her, enraged beyond anything I’d ever felt, and filled with more hatred than I’d ever known. But I could see that in her eyes, Ariya couldn’t bear to see me this way. She was sad and angry, and she looked at me as though I were some sort of stranger to her. But there was also a look of desperation on her face and her eyes were pleading with me to stay, not to leave again. “So, what, you’re just going to leave? Angry and hateful and blaming everyone else. Just like how you left me and Ophelia that day.” I was right. Her mind was stuck on that day, the day I’d left. But just like then, I couldn’t go back on my words or way of thinking. I’d come too far, and my hatred had grown too powerful. So, I shrugged her hand off of me and took a step away from her before saying, “Ophelia? You expect me to be grateful to someo

Chapter 23: Want

“Ariya, are you sure that you’re okay? Your hands are shaking!” With that, Nicholas stood up from his seat and began to walk across the living room where I was seated. He knelt down in front of me and took my shivering hands in his warm ones and gently rubbed at them.I looked down at him nervously and tried to muster up a smile.“I’m okay, just a little shaky. I haven’t eaten in a while, that’s probably why.”Although I was wolfishly hungry, that was only partly the truth. Theodore had overheard the entire conversation with Kiyan just now, and I was afraid that he would tell his brother everything. My fear only increased the moment Theodore’s footsteps were heard through the house and I began to start making up a few lies and excuses in my head. But the moment Theodore entered the room and saw me, his eyes softened, and he winked at me reassuringly. Kiyan’s secret would be safe with him.“Your brother is really something! I’m glad that this never happened,” he said with a sad tone to

Chapter 24: Dangerous desire

Nicholas leaned down, his hot breath fanning against my ear, “I can smell how much you want me Airya…” The moment he said it, I shivered and closed my thighs together, completely enraptured by his words and just how true they were. “Funny thing is,” he then placed a hot, open-mouthed kiss against the skin of my neck, “I want you just as much.” And with that he grabbed me even closer, placing his lips on mine in a wet, passionate frenzy, and carried me over towards the bed before laying me down carefully. His lips never left mine, not even when he climbed on top of me and pinned my hands to the bed. Every inch of my body revelled in his touch, and I couldn’t get enough of the feeling of his warm lips against mine. His lips then moved down to my neck where they sucked forcefully at my soft flesh and occasionally he’d bite and nibble. My mouth was agape and heavy pants escaped my parted lips. It felt so heavenly that my legs slid across the bedsheets and pulled up, so my knees were off

Chapter 25: Frostbite

As I followed Melissa down the dark, quiet hallway, my mind filled the solemn silence, flooding with so many thoughts that I could barely keep up with them. Yesterday when I’d seen Dante, he was very much alive and well, and so I wondered what had happened between then and now to change that. I’d admit that we hadn’t parted on the best of terms, but Dante was still a good friend of mine. He’d been my first friend here and in him, I saw parts of myself too. Although we sometimes did not see eye-to-eye, I felt as though he truly understood me. And so, the idea of him being gone from my life, and gone from this house was heart shattering. And with every step closer to his room, I could feel my chest tighten and a sore lump begin to form at the back of my throat as the gravity of his loss began to crash down on my shoulders.Dante stayed with the rest of the staff members, in a separate section of Nicholas’ home which surprisingly still matched the grandness of the rest of the place. His

Chapter 26: The man I once knew

At first I thought I was hallucinating or perhaps seeing a ghost. But when Melissa uttered what we were all thinking and Nicholas began to glance at the body on the bed and then back at the doorway, I knew that the man before us was all too real.He chuckled and the scratched then back of his head before saying, “Uh no, you called me on the phone earlier. I am Daniel, Dante’s twin brother.”They were identical with each feature exactly the same from their dark hair to their perfectly chiselled noses.“W-wow… Dante never mentioned that you two were twins,” Melissa said, visibly still in shock.Daniel glanced at his brother solemnly and then gazed back at Melissa before saying, “I didn’t think he’d mention me at all. We never really got along too well. It’s a shame that he passed away before we could change that.”A moment of silence passed before Daniel smiled and then pointed to the body on the bed. “I guess I will take him. I shall hold a funeral for him at about 5 p.m. today if anyo

Chapter 27: Sabotage

Melissa’s words never left my mind, and Dante’s death consumed my every thought too. If I was correct and Dante’s death was an attempt to sabotage this engagement, it meant that someone close to me was responsible. The only Wolfsbane interaction I’d had was the short introduction yesterday. No one else knew that Dante was my friend except for the people in this house and… Kiyan.I shook my head the moment my brother’s name entered it. There was no way my brother would kill Dante. Then again, I was slowly beginning to realise that I barely knew the man my brother had become. And as I thought of our argument yesterday, I couldn’t deny that the man who’d once been my naïve, sweet and kind brother had become something twisted by hatred. A part of me believed that such a man had the capability to kill Dante in the hopes of ending my engagement and getting me away from the royal lycan siblings. But a bigger part of me believed t

Chapter 28: The curse

Slowly I opened my eyes and the moment I did, I let out a little gasp. Nicholas was standing right in front of me, facing Aura. Drops of red blood fell to the floor and I stepped aside to look at his face. His flesh was cut from the top of his eyebrow, through his cheek and right down to the jaw. Blood was gushing down his face, falling onto his clothing and then onto the floor.Aura’s orangey eyes had a striking look of fear in them, and she almost instantly retracted her hand and stuck it to her side. Nicholas on the other hand had his red eyes locked on hers. And in the next moment, the sound of thunder boomed throughout the entire house and the windows shook, the glass rattling inside the windowpanes at the sheer loudness of the thunder.“I… I am sorry Nick,” Aura whispered softly. It was the first time I’d seen her so frightened and fragile. And that was when I realised just why she kept him under such a tight leash. Out of all of the siblings, Nicholas was by far the most powerf

Chapter 29: Nostalgia

“So, you’ve made your choice to continue with the engagement?” Aura asked the moment I entered into the room. She stood beside Nikita who had busied herself with some of my notebooks. I snatched them from her hands and then placed them in my cupboard so she wouldn’t be tempted to touch my belongings again. She gazed up at me with a guilty look on her face and then smiled shyly, “Your writing is pretty good.”“Don’t touch my stuff!” I hissed, then I took a glance at Aura and nodded.“I’m glad you’ve come to your senses. You do your part and I do mine. Now, go and scrub yourself clean, I can smell my brother all over you. Once you’re done, you can wear that robe.” She pointed to a silky blue robe that she’d draped over one of my bedposts. She then smiled at me and sat on my bed expectantly.“You’re just going to wait here?” I questioned with annoyance.Aura nodded, “I will bring my stylist in as soon as you are ready and then I will oversee the process.”I wanted to argue with her, but

Chapter 30: The engagement crasher

I noticed now that all the plants in the house had changed. All of the vases were filled with bright pink roses and these roses seemed to follow us right to the foyer, out of the door, and then, their petals formed a path around the house, leading to the backyard where it was beautifully decorated. A wooden canopy stood in the centre of the yard, surrounded by the strangers who’d come to live stream this engagement. The canopy was draped in vines of pale pink and bright white flowers and surrounded by pink petals. They were gently illuminated by the soft rays of the sun and for a moment, I admired the beauty of the set up. It was something out of a dream, one which I’d never even let myself dare to dream before. I was getting engaged today, and although it was something arranged, I realised in that moment that, to me, it had begun to feel a little more real. I didn’t love Nicholas. I was only starting to like him and warm up to him, but for once I was happy that it was him.The warm t
