CHAPTER 31 Poking the Beast

Damien's POV Hours, I had watched them together; they looked and acted like a little family. The pair of them gushing and pandering to every one of the kid's needs. It was sickening to watch the absolute guile of the little pup thinking he could swoop in and steal what I had distinctly marked as mine yesterday at the town meeting. Did I have to fully mark my territory for this halfwit to realise he was stepping on some rather large toes? Mate or no mate bond he wasn’t having her!   I wanted to stride over there and crush this parasite that had latched itself onto Red. I knew of his family; I had grown up close by, we had all heard the stories of our father's rivalry! The brutality and cruelty that had transpired from both sides causing a ridiculous feud; people just needed to accept when they were beaten. But it was no secret how hungry for power the pup's father was. Apparently, that trait was passed down to wolf boy, too, as he desperately tried to get his paws into my ruby an

CHAPTER 32 Three of Us

Jason's POV I knew as soon as the door opened that it was Lizzy's mother; the aged woman had the same dark eyes as Lizzy, even her hair was the same shade of raven like Lizzy’s. Seeing her sway against the door, the foul smell of tequila and vodka that clung to the air around her told me she had spent her child-free afternoon drowning in self-pity and memories. No care for her child, instantly I understood why Abigail seemed to go through so many emotions at the mention of Lizzy's mother. She was undeserving of such a remarkable child. For a moment, all my anger seemed to focus on this pathetic human conversing with Abigail. Damien was no longer a concern to me, although Archer was still on alert, ready to pounce if provoked. "Bout time you brought her back... I was about to phone the police and file a missing person's report." She grumbled ungratefully at Abigail, who had taken Lizzy's hand and headed towards the door; the tension in Abigail's shoulders only exacerbated my fou

CHAPTER 33 She Enjoyed My Touch

Damien's POV "Why do you have to be such an ass?" She scolded me the second the door was closed, crossing her arms in front of her chest, looking at me furiously. Seeing how her breasts push against her arms made me smirk devilishly, knowing from my earlier observations that she had no bra on. Sensing my roaming eyes, she huffed, rolling her eyes at me, making her frustration evident. "Come on; he had it coming. Acting like a protective boyfriend, what the fuck Red? He has only known you a day!" I argued back, unhappy that our first moments together today had started with an argument because of some male.   "Oh yeah, remind me... how long have you known me, huh?" Shaking her head, clearly exasperated by my behaviour and the situation.   "Longer than him!" I protested, trying to stand my ground, but she looked so damn cute when she was pissed off it was hard to keep a straight face. Not getting the response she wanted from me, she walked towards her bedroom; without a second tho

CHAPTER 34 A Good Distraction

Jason's POV Violently slamming the large oak door to the pack house, even I could feel the anger radiating from me crashing furiously into anyone who dared approach. Ignoring the curious faces of other pack members, wanting to avoid causing more damage than needed tonight, I made a beeline for the stairs to the alpha quarters on the top floor, taking the steps two at a time. "Bit late for that; you nearly split the door in two. Are we done with this temper tantrum yet!" Archer chided sarcastically.   "This is all your fucking fault." I hissed angrily to Archer, fed up with his attitude. "How do you work that out? I wanted to rip the half-breed, a new asshole. You wouldn't let me!" He replied angrily "Instead, you wanted to keep the peace! Now tell me, what did playing peacemaker get us, huh!"   "Fuck off", I hissed back at him angrily. "Oh yeah, he is in there now with OUR mate, doing god knows what while you throw a tantrum like a two-year-old." He roared internally. I kne

CHAPTER 35 Escaping Dreamland

Abigail's POV I felt like I had only been asleep for seconds; I could still feel Damien beside me on the sofa, having fallen asleep with him while watching some crime documentary. The distant sound of the tv echoed around my head, mixing with the strong beat of Damien's heart. I could feel him fidgeting to get comfortable, pulling me closer to his chest, the gentle lull of his breathing soothing my nerves as I let sleep take hold. I knew I should wake up and ask him to leave so he didn't get the wrong idea about us, but after my traumatic dream the night before, I subconsciously decided to stay safely wrapped in his arms.   Visions of the luscious green fields surrounding my childhood home filtered through my mind. Beautiful fields filled with stunning white and yellow wild daisies and majestic horses. Had it always been this beautiful? I could have sworn this place once made me feel trapped and alone, feeling that the bordering fences I was never allowed to cross hid from me the

CHAPTER 36 A Good Friend

Jason's POV Dressing silently, not wanting to wake Kayla, who slept soundly, I knew I had pushed her harder than usual last night; she had to be exhausted. Even without my wolf, my animalistic nature knew no limits last night; I had been completely ravenous. Letting out an exhausted breath, I groaned, acknowledging that without Archer's presence, my body seemed to be paying for our night of frenzied passion. Swallowing my pride, I reached out to my stubborn wolf.   "Buddy, I am sorry," I admitted honestly. I felt like I was missing one of my limbs, not having his endless commentary flowing through my mind. "I am not healing you!" He spat from the depths of my mind making me sigh. Apparently, today was going to be a long ass day! "I didn't ask you to; I just wanted to say I am sorry; I shouldn't have taken my bad mood out on you." I tried to explain but knew my words were falling on deaf ears. He was upset about more than me shutting him out; this was about Abbi. He was angry t

CHAPTER 37 Radio Silence

Jason's POV Walking through the packhouse, I sighed. Morning training was the last thing I wanted to be doing today, I really could have done with an easy office day today. With Archer awol- my body ached. It didn't help that my head thundered after my disagreement with Tommy this morning. I knew I was feeling sorry for myself, but I honestly did feel lost without Archer. He had been part of my life for as long as I could remember. I knew most got their wolves when they hit their late teens, but Archer had been with me since at least my 4th birthday.   When I started talking about my friend 'Archer', my parents thought I had an imaginary friend, but they soon realised it was my wolf. Throughout the years, Archer and I had disagreements and fallings out, but that was normal when you spent 24 hours a day with someone, especially someone as self-righteous as Archer. But he had never fully shut me out before. Sighing heavily, I considered for a brief moment if Abigail was going to com

CHAPTER 38 Hell Fire

Damien's POV Thanks to my family's bloodline, sleep wasn't something I needed but instead chose to do. I wasn't some mere mortal who needed to 'recharge their batteries' or 'get some beauty sleep'. I was lucky enough to be handsome and alert 24/7. However, tonight was a rare exception to my rules.   Lying next to Red, her head resting against my chest as she giggled at some chick flick we had settled on watching, I felt my body relax in ways it had not before. Maybe it was the way she absentmindedly trailed her fingertips across my chest in little patterns or the way her heart slowly stopped racing and eased into a steady, strong beat, soothing my soul. Whatever the reason, I was not complaining. Smiling as I opened my eyes to see her head nuzzled perfectly in the crook of my neck, her hands tightened under my arms and around my back, hugging herself to my chest tightly. My arms cradled her head protectively. Even in my sleep, I wanted to keep her safe. Being this close to her w

CHAPTER 39 Different Colour

Abigail's POV   Growing up, I thought that my unique black and white wings were a warning from God, a daily reminder of the constant struggle I would have to face navigating through life, fighting the urge to give in to the primal need for destruction and chaos that I had inherited from my father. I wanted to believe God had faith in my strength and determination not to allow sin and corruption to take root inside me; believing instead, he wanted me to follow my mother's example of compassion and mercy. But I knew he would test my faith and resolve from time to time- like now in the realm of sleep—a place where I could so easily close my eyes and shut out the harrowing cries of innocence. I had grown up to be ashamed of my wings; they always reminded me of how different I was, how unnatural and damned. I can count the times I have shown them to people on one hand. One! My mother! That is it! So, it seemed fitting to unleash my one white, one black wing in a world where they belong

CHAPTER 40 The Rampant Beast

Jason's POV Leaving my Father's office, I felt like I was going to throw up; my only saving grace was that I had not eaten anything yet! Nor would I have time now! Following my Father and Marcus down the stairs with Tommy silently at my side, I could feel the apprehension rolling off him. I knew he was picking up on the dread that was eating me up. Kicking myself for being unable to hide it from him, I didn't want to concern the pack with my suspicions until I had chance to talk to Abigail!   Coming to stand beside my Father on the steps of the packhouse, I tried to steady my racing heart, locking my hands behind my back stoically. Tommy and Marcus stood to my right, my mother; the packs Luna appeared beside her mate. Taking his hand in her loving embrace, I knew my Father had linked her and asked her to come and address the pack with him; he wanted to show unity and strength. Marcus whistled to get the pack's attention, sensing their alpha had something to say; they all assembled
