Chapter 60: The Rogues

The werewolves considered Camden for a moment, clearly uncertain of what to do next. After sharing a glance with one another, they too shifted into their human forms. Both of them were men. One was tall and incredibly muscular. His biceps as big as Camden's thighs. He had short cropped dark hair and dark brown, almost black eyes. His partner in crime was significantly shorter than him, but still taller than Camden. He was also muscular and had dark hair, but it was long and wavy and he had copper skin. Camden sat before them, probably quite a pathetic sight. Her long blonde hair hung loose as she tried to use it to cover her breasts. She was covered in mud and scratches and was still holding her aching ribs, trying to catch her breath."We thought you were a man," the tall one said in a deep, gruff voice. The smaller man chimed in, adding, "Your wolf is big," as if to explain their initial aggressive response. Camden felt a mix of relief and fear that she had shifted. It might have sa

Chapter 61: The Leader

Camden sat in silence on the dusty, worn-out couch, her gaze fixed on the darkness as it saturated outside, seeping through the dusty windows. As she watched she observed the flickering glow of a colossal bonfire, its warmth unable to reach her confined space. Jake and Kai moved about the hunting lodge, lighting candles to provide some kind of illumination inside. As Camden's adrenaline began to ebb away, so too did her warmth. She pulled her feet up on the couch, crossing her ankles and pulling her knees into her chest to try and conserve warmth in her still naked body. "I'm cold," she whispered, looking at Kai, hoping he would take pity on her. He sighed and left the room, returning with a musty blanket which he tossed to her. She wrapped herself up, grateful for the warmth it provided as well as the barrier between her naked form and Jake's lingering eyes.As the minutes stretched on, the men watched her in silence as Camden tried to formulate some kind of plan before this Jamie ch

Chapter 62: The Long Awaited Meal

Jamie had asked Camden why she believed she was there, and she wasn't too sure how to answer. Instead, she took a hearty gulp of wine. Realising she had been quiet for too long and needed to give him some kind of an answer, she began, "Um..." she sighed deeply. "I think..." she trailed off, wondering if her idea would work and how to phrase her response. Then she had it. "I think maybe it's because of you," she finally said, her cheeks reddening as she glanced away, avoiding eye contact, trying to seem coy. She took another gulp of wine, trying to steady her nerves. "Me?" Jamie asked, clearly intrigued. "What does your being here have to do with me?" His gaze remained fixed on her, focusing on her lips. Camden exhaled deeply and drained the last of the wine in her glass. "I don't know exactly," she confessed. "I just feel drawn to you," she lied, feeling disgusted with herself. "That's interesting," Jamie said, his eyes never leaving her. "Because I feel the same way." "Well that's a

Chapter 63: The Lie

TRIGGER WARNING: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE"You must be tired," Jamie said sympathetically. "Come with me, you can stay in my room," he said, standing up and reaching his hand out to help her to her feet. She gratefully accepted it with a smile, then he ushered her to a room just off to the side of the lounge they had been sitting in. The room was dark as she walked in. "Hang on, let me get some candles," Jamie said thoughtfully as he hurried back to the lounge to retrieve two candles. He led her into the room, using the candles to guide the way. It was cluttered with furniture from other parts of the house, as they carried out their 'renovations', but there was a large, comfortable-looking bed and, even more exciting to Camden, there was a window with no glass. "Get comfortable, I'll join you later," Jamie said, causing Camden's stomach to churn. Thankfully, she was facing away from him because she couldn't help the shift in her expression from relief to fear. She managed to pull herself tog

Chapter 64: The Morning After

Camden awoke to the feel of someone gently stroking her hair. Once again, her mind immediately drew up pictures of Clayton's face, but when she opened her eyes, she saw Jamie looking at her with longing eyes. She realized she was snuggled against him, and he was smiling at her. "Good morning," he whispered. "Morning," she croaked, her voice thick with sleep. "How did you sleep?" he asked. "Pretty good actually," she replied honestly, a smile brewing on her lips. "How about you?" she asked. "Pretty good," he replied, smiling brightly. "How are your ribs?" he asked, his brows suddenly furrowing as he thought about her complaint during the night. "They hurt," she frowned. "But I've had worse," she said, thinking of some of her previous sword fighting injuries, though he obviously deduced that she was talking about her fictional abusive ex-mate."Can I see?" he asked. Camden frowned. "I guess," she said, feeling awkward exposing herself to him. She lifted the oversized t-shirt she had sle

Chapter 65: The Great Outdoors

"Are you hungry?" Jamie asked, breaking the silence. Camden looked up at him, her thoughts interrupted. "I could eat," she answered, realizing that her stomach had been growling softly. "I'll be back," Jamie said as he sneaked out of the room, pulling the door closed behind him. Camden heard the familiar sound of the lock rolling, and a sense of unease settled within her. She sat there on the bed, finishing off her coffee and pondering her predicament. She needed to somehow find a way out of here before Jamie got wise about the lack of a mate bond between them. But even then, if he still believed there was a bond, he would likely pursue her. She flopped back on the bed, annoyed with herself and annoyed with the situation. Fortunately, Jamie seemed to be treating her well. He hadn't hurt her or tried to take advantage of her in any way, for which she was grateful. He actually reminded her a lot of a friend she had had in high school when she was about 17 years old. She'd spent almost a

Chapter 66: The New Waterfall

Camden abruptly stopped in her tracks, releasing Jamie's hand and fixing him with a stern look. "It's not what you think," he quickly interjected. Unconvinced, she demanded, "Then what is it?" Her voice conveyed a mix of disbelief and concern. "Cameron, it's complicated," Jamie sighed, clearly exasperated by the situation. Undeterred, Camden insisted, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "Well, explain it to me, Jamie. I'm smart, I'm sure I'll get it." A faint smile flickered on his lips as he remarked, "There's that Alpha blood coming through." Camden's expression remained steadfast, her eyes fixed on him, silently demanding an explanation. Jamie relented, realizing she deserved to know. "The Alpha of the Wildwood Pack, he's not a good guy," he confessed. Camden remained silent, allowing him to continue. Jamie's words tumbled out, carrying the weight of sorrow and anger. "We used to be peaceful people, but he's brought out the worst in all of us." His eyes were shadowed with pain and his

Chapter 67: The Kiss

Jamie kissed her gently. It was sudden and unexpected and Camden didn't quite know what to do besides let it happen to her. She was surprised by how gentle he was, as if she was some soft, delicate flower that he wanted to hold and cherish in spite of having big, clumsy hands. He broke away, looking at her face, searchingly. She blushed, looking away shyly. "Did you feel anything?" he asked. She nodded, "It's like butterflies," Camden said, which was not entirely untrue. The mate bond felt way more intense though, but he'd obviously never experienced it to compare. "Did you?" she asked, curious and nervous to know what he might say. "Yeah, it's like butterflies," he said with a smile. She smiled and turned to look over the waterfall again. "Thank you for bringing me here," she whispered. "Its so beautiful and peaceful," she added. He wrapped his arms around her and stood behind her, nuzzling down into the crook of her neck. All she could think about was how much she missed Clayton.Af

Chapter 68: The Broken Promise

TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULTCamden's heart skipped a beat at the unexpected appearance of Jake in the room with her. He quickly turned and closed the door, locking it behind him with the key. Jamie must have left it in the lock in his urgency to investigate what had the men in a frenzy. Panic cut through Camden like a knife. "What are you doing in here, Jake?" she asked, trying to convey a tone that was more confident than she felt. "I'm here for you," Jake said, his eyes raking over her hungrily. "You know I'm Jamie's mate," Camden said, trying to brush him off casually as she continued to deal cards, but inside she was terrified. "I don't believe that," Jake said. "I think you're full of shit," he added. "Well, it doesn't really matter what you think at the end of the day, but I think you should leave. Jamie will be furious if he finds you in here," she threatened.Jake laughed at her, and her heart sank. "You're going to do what I say," he said, his voice low and menacing, "or

Chapter 69: The Interloper

Matt didn't sleep well. The storm raged on relentlessly through the night and he couldn't tear his thoughts from Camden and whether she was okay. He woke up early to get a headstart, hoping to catch up with her, but he still wasn't picking up her scent. He paced up and down the area, still in his wolf form, desperately sniffing at the air, trying to pick something up. A short distance away from the path he'd been following, he found a muddy footprint, but there was no guarantee it was hers. As a result, he decided it would be best not to follow it.He paced up and down, desperate to get going, but it was as if nature were conspiring against him. He returned to the spot he had fallen asleep last night, where he had lost her scent, and waited, hopefully. Hours later, he finally got a break as the wind changed direction and he caught her scent once again. He quickly grabbed his backpack in his jaws and followed her trail. He reached a number of points on the trail where he lost her scent
