Chapter 31: Goodbyes

I sat in my bedroom, staring out the window at the town below. After my emotional exit from Leo yesterday, I couldn't bear to look at him. He must've thought I was an absolute mess of a person. In all honesty, he'd be right. I had heard him and Orene leave sometime last night just before dinner, and return well into the evening. I found myself wondering about trivial things, like how the rest of his day went or how he was feeling. But I couldn't bring myself to face him. I knew in doing so, I'd be back at square one.My half-packed bag sat on my floor in the same spot it had been for the past few days. I couldn't bring myself to continue filling it. I hadn't changed my mind. Even though everything around me had gone haywire since then, I was still resolute on the fact that I had to leave. Yet, it still didn't change the fact that the thought of potentially never being in Bloodmoon again or seeing Leo alive, hurt. I shook my head free of any such thoughts and grabbed the couple t-shi

Chapter 32: Handwritten Notes

"Leo," I said somewhat breathlessly. His eyes scanned me and then fell onto my bag. A weight pressed on my chest. "Can we talk outside?" he asked, not taking his eyes off mine. I nodded and followed him to the front steps leading up to his house. Leo reached around me and closed the door, giving us privacy. His scent was typically wondrous to me, but the added layer of musk and natural scent played with my emotions more than usual. I inhaled—not to breathe him in more, but to steady myself and regain control of my senses. He stepped back and eyed me for what seemed like a long time. I wish I knew what he was thinking. Even my ability to feel his emotions were dwindling. Is this what it was like to reject your mate?"You're leaving," he said, finally speaking, pointing to my bag. "Yeah," I said, looking at it. "Gwenna gave me some food for the trip and I think I have everything." "Does this have to do with what happened yesterday?" he questioned, almost cutting into my spee

Chapter 33: The Secrets You Keep

I fought with myself for a long while. Should I go back and tell Leo? Would he even believe me? He didn't want to hear it the first time around, so there was a giant possibility that he wouldn't hear me out again. But now I had concrete proof. That had to count for something. I shoved the paper back into my bag and tied the drawstring. Then, I shifted back, clutched it in my teeth, and turned around. I felt my wolf yip at my decision and I couldn't help but smile as I made my way back to Bloodmoon. Once I entered Bloodmoon territory again, I shifted into my human form and put on the outfit I had just changed out of before continuing to Leo's house. The sooner I got there, the better. I didn't think Gwenna was a danger to him, but I had no idea what she was truly up to. Plus, I wouldn't sleep knowing I could've done something and didn't, even if it meant I was dismissed or proven wrong. I quickly made haste and soon found myself standing at the end of Leo's driveway. I was here not

Chapter 34: Visions of the Past

TRIGGER WARNING: This chapter has mention of child death. Although not explicitly shown or described in detail, please read at your own discretion. "Gwenna?" Leo asked, confusion clearly toying with his voice. "That doesn't make sense." "I thought so too," I began. "Read what it says." Leo leaned forward more and I could feel his breath on the back of my neck. "Azure Mountains, amulet, death of a loved one. Resurrection. I don't get it. Why would Gwenna be looking at this?""I have no idea," I replied. "I thought you might know. Maybe research for the pups at the school. I mean, we learned this story when I was younger too…" I knew that wasn't it, but I was trying to give her the benefit of the doubt for Leo, even if my wolf didn't agree with me. I didn't really know what angle I was coming in with here, I just knew that something about Gwenna had seemed off from the second we met, and that somehow, this, along with what I overheard the other night, confirmed it. "Hmm, could

Chapter 35: Tied to the Alpha

*LEO'S POV*I watched as Nia's head flew back. Her eyes rolled back into her head and her body started to shake. "Nia? Nia!"I shook her, trying to rouse her from whatever stupor she was in. I remembered her mention of visions—the first one she experienced being about Erylis. Was this another one?My hands trembled as I tried to think of ways to help her; to wake her. F*ck, come on, Leo. Think, think! And then, as soon as the convulsions started, they stopped. I waited, fearfully, for any sign of her awakening. I got down on my knees in front of her and reached a hand out, cusping her face. It was warmer than usual. "Princess," I said, rubbing her cheek with my thumb, trying to keep my voice as calm and soothing as possible. "Princess…come back—" But I didn't get a chance to finish. An intense pain jostled my internal system and I seized up. It felt like I was being ripped apart. I tightly gripped the arm of the chair Nia was sitting in, and closed my eyes. My jaw instinctiv

Chapter 36: Keep Me Close

As I drew in a breath, I could hear familiar voices coming back to me. Everything was still black—I had no idea what was happening. I tried to open my eyes but it was like I wasn't in control of my body or movements. "Orene, what in heavens is going on—oh my…what happened? I thought she left?" My ears quickly picked up Gwenna's voice. It seemed like my reappearance tousled her a little. I felt her breath on my face, and wanted so badly to move away. She was so close and her hand touched my forehead; first, the palm, then the back of it. "I-I don't know," Orene stammered, followed by a frustrated sigh. "Leo just said to call Sylvie and then took off to the office for something." Gwenna scoffed. "Typical." She, too, sighed and then backed away. I was relieved the second her hand left my face. "She's running a small fever, but nothing extreme. Did you get a hold of Sylvie? I know she's been tied up lately. There was a case of influenza in the school and—" She was cut short by a

Chapter 37: A Heart's Confession

I swear my breath left me. Everything we'd been trying to avoid—working so hard to avoid—was coming true, and from what I heard, there was no stopping it. I didn't take my eyes off him, but I also didn't speak either. It was totally unexpected, and I now knew what Malissa meant when I first told her of it all. To me, it was almost second nature—an Ancient Alpha, a curse, an amulet. But now, hearing that Leo had the blood of this vile monster, and that his fate was tied to this awakening…it was a lot. "Say something…" Leo coaxed. I blinked and finally turned away. "I will," I assured him. "I just—are you sure?" Leo nodded, and I deeply inhaled. "Alright, alright…" I found myself repeating. "What do we need to do?"I looked back at him, and he was staring at me in amazement."Do?""Yeah," I agreed. "What can we do to prepare for this? I can alert the pack, let the community center know. We can have Erylis and Orene send word to nearby packs so they can prepare. What needs to

Chapter 38: Seeing is Believing

When I woke the next morning, I rolled over to outstretch my arm over Leo's chiseled torso, only to find his side of the bed empty. Groggily, I lifted my head to find a note on the bedside stand. I reached over and grabbed the paper, reading it in its entirety. 'Had to run into town. Call if you need anything.Leo' I grinned to myself as I set it back on the table and then rolled over onto my back. Leo said he loved me last night, and showed it in the most beautiful way. I couldn't stop picturing the way he moved against my body—we fit perfectly together and it was unlike anything I imagined the bonding process would be and then some. The thought of desiring to be alone without a pack or mate seemed so foreign to me now. That person was entirely different from the one I was on the path to becoming, and I wasn't eager to stop it any time soon. Was this what the Alpha connection was like? As I stared up at the ceiling, another thought entered into my mind. It was what Leo had said

Chapter 39: Warning Signs

My hands trembled as I typed in my father's name. I was assuming Leo's meeting was to decide how to warn the other packs, but I needed to tell my father everything that had been happening before it was too late. I listened to the dial tone ring through four times before it went to voicemail. I hung up and immediately redialed, hoping to get through on the second time, with very little success. I cursed as I tapped the red button again and typed him a text to call me, then shoved it into my pocket. I leaned my head on the patio post and sighed, staring out at the driveway. The front door creaked open, and I spun around—half expecting for Gwenna or Erylis to be there—only to find Malissa. She smiled as she closed it behind her and sat down on the step beside me. "Hey," she said softly, nudging my shoulder. "That was quite the scene back there. How're you holding up? Really?" Her eyes were large, and I couldn't deny her the truth. She'd been through just as much as me since we got h

Chapter 40: A Mother's Love

After Malissa left to go back inside, I made my way to the training facility. The last place I wanted to be was inside that house. I didn't know if I'd ever be able to look at Erylis again after that encounter. Not until we figured out what was happening to him, at least. I reached the doors to find the hatch still unlocked. I opened it and headed inside, making sure to close the doors behind me after flicking on the light. I still couldn't get over the size of this place. It was definitely a master class location, and probably one of the reasons Leo and the rest of the Bloodmoon pack were so combat ready. I stripped down in one of the cubbies and put my clothes inside, then shifted. If I was to keep my promise to Malissa, I needed to practice my training. There was no guarantee what we were walking into and with the Ancient Alpha more than likely on the way, it was best that I could handle myself. I scraped my paw against the dirt, feeling the pieces of natural earth between my
