Chapter 21

The stretch of the elevator ride to the underground parking was completely silent. From his spot, Max looked at Emma, who was staring at the elevator doors in front of her. He had noticed how her face had relaxed moments after they had started moving. He really wanted to ask her how she felt, maybe pat her back as a sign of understanding, or even take her right there and make her forget the world for a couple of times. But neither of those things happened once the elevator doors opened. Emma walked out, saying thank you, but without looking at him. Max stood there for a moment, watching her walk away. He gathered the courage and walked after her, just to make sure she was okay to drive. Then Emma stopped next to a pillar marked with a capital letter A in dark blue. Max did the same, and there he was, a couple of meters away from her, silent, waiting for her to turn around and look at him, to demand to know what the hell he was doing following her. But what came next was unexpected."H

Chapter 22

The warm grip of Max's hand intensified as they walked towards the men's restroom. He stopped Emma at a certain distance while he entered to check how many people were inside. Upon inspection, he found only two individuals with long hair discussing the upcoming rock concert in the city while washing their hands. When they left, he lightly tapped on the four cubicle doors, but there was no response. Not wanting to take any chances, he peeked over the doors, risking the possibility of someone not answering and finding him sitting there. After confirming that no one was inside, he went back to Emma, who was clearly euphoric and excited about what was to come. They closed the door, and Max made sure that no one would catch them. Being tall, his head could easily be seen. They entered the last stall and hurriedly shut the door."Are you sure you want to do this?" Emma asked, looking at Max's face."Yes, I also want to fulfill that fantasy for myself," he smiled to show that he desired it t

Chapter 23

Max continued to smile as he reached his apartment building. He put his hand in his pocket and caressed the lace fabric. He replayed in his mind over and over again what they had done in the restroom cubicle at that bar. It would undoubtedly be a memory to cherish when he couldn't see her anymore. When the elevator doors opened, he already had his routine planned out—shower and then bed. He had sent Emma a text message asking if she had arrived safely, and she promptly replied that she had and hoped he had as well. She sent him a smiling emoji and wished him a good night. He responded that he had just arrived and wished her the same, to which she replied, "Likewise." He noticed that she had put up that wall, but he understood. When he looked up to head to his apartment, he came face to face with Irina. Max stopped in his tracks and widened his eyes. "Well, if it isn't Mr. Müller," she spat with anger. He wanted to tell her the truth, but he held back. "Good evening, Irina. What are y

Chapter 24

Hotel Four Seasons, Downtown, New YorkEmma entered the lobby of the hotel nearly ten minutes before the scheduled time with Mr. Bradford. She glanced at her watch and sighed with gratitude for successfully navigating through the heavy traffic in the area."Miss Spencer?" a male voice called out from behind her. She turned to face the person and found a tall, elegant man whose tension was visible on his face. Unintentionally, she estimated that he must be in his fifties. Gray hair didn't conceal his appearance; instead, he seemed proud to carry it."Yes?" Emma smiled. "Are you Mr...?" She couldn't finish her sentence."Bradford, Jack Bradford," he said. Emma wondered why she had imagined it could be him. Then she remembered her uniform with a small logo on the left side and another discreet one on her laptop bag."Pleasure to meet you, Emma Spencer," he offered his hand in greeting, and she returned the gesture."Have you had breakfast yet?" he asked, leading her into a private dining

Chapter 25

Emma arrived at the company feeling upset. She couldn't believe that Max had attended a business breakfast for no apparent reason. But then she remembered that he had secured that client, and of course, he was the owner of the company. She tilted her neck and massaged it as she sat in her chair, feeling a lot of tension. She decided to focus on her work and put her mind on that matter once she finished. However, half an hour later, Max had summoned Emma to the main office."Is everything alright?" Mrs. Byrne asked upon learning that Mr. Müller had called for Emma. Emma was getting up from her chair to go to Max's office. She nodded. "But is everything okay with Mr. Müller?" Byrne wanted to know."Yes, ma'am.""And why has he called you to his office?" Emma wasn't surprised that she knew; she was always up to date with everything happening on her floor and in the company."I don't know, I'm unaware of the reason, Mrs. Byrne." They left the office and then went their separate ways. The

Chapter 26

Max stepped aside to let Irina enter the office, closing the door with a glance towards Katharina, who immediately mouthed an apology to him."What are you doing at the company?" Max asked in a cold tone. Irina rarely made visits, especially unannounced ones, and he knew it wasn't something she approved of. Irina settled herself on one of the armchairs, taking her time to get comfortable."You didn't answer my calls. You left without saying anything, and I woke up naked in your bed," she said, then glanced at him standing by the door. "I'm not giving up on you, Max.""We'll talk about that tonight, but right now, I have a lot of work to do," Max replied."I won't take long," Irina said, seemingly unfazed by Max's cold gaze. "I want to discuss your infidelity." His words made her tense."Let's talk about yours first," Max said, walking toward her and sitting in the armchair next to hers. Her eyes widened."I've never been unfaithful to you, Max," she retorted angrily. Max leaned back i

Chapter 27

Irina stopped the car in front of an elegant vacation home on the outskirts of New York City. She got out of the vehicle in fury and slammed the door of her Lamborghini shut. Horacio, with a big smile on his lips, descended the stairs, jogging towards her. As he saw Irina so angry, the smile vanished from his face immediately."What's wrong? Who made my little bunny so mad?" Horacio said, approaching her. Irina gave him a hateful look."Max knows," she said. Those three words alone made Horacio turn pale. He raised his eyebrows and ran a hand through his hair."How did he find out?" he asked immediately, standing in front of her. Irina leaned against the car door, covered her face with both hands, and began to cry. "Calm down, calm down, bunny. If you want me to talk to him and say that it was me who seduced you or something, you'll have your wedding of the century," he said, stroking her arms, trying to comfort her, even though the last thing he wanted was to help Horacio. He wanted

Chapter 28

Max looked at Emma, noticing her cold and distant expression, but he didn't care. She had to give him a chance to speak and clarify things."Yes, you're my friend," Max replied, leaning against the railing next to her. He looked at her and she merely lifted her gaze. "What are you doing here? Waiting for your ex-fiancé?" he said, annoyed. Emma shook her head."You're the least qualified to say anything, you know?" Emma complained. There was a brief silence. "My heel broke when I was trying to avoid you in the elevator, but I managed to hear you yelling at my boss.""I wasn't yelling," Max defended himself."Well, you seemed upset," Emma retorted. "You shouldn't have given her more information than she had. Now she'll think there's something going on between us.""But there is something going on between us. Can't you see it?""It's not like that. Just..." Emma didn't continue as Max sat back on his heels and tried to take hold of her foot."Let me see your heel," he said, but she refus

Chapter 29

Emma made it back to her apartment in less time than usual. She had stayed inside her car, thinking about what Max had said on the stairs. "She had ended her engagement," but he was still the owner of the company she worked for. She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose. She wanted to regain control; her body was reacting impulsively to his presence, and it shouldn't be. There were rules she had to follow. So, what now? She removed her fingers from her nose and opened her eyes, startled to see Elaine standing in front of her car."What are you doing here alone?" Elaine asked, furrowing her brow. Emma got out of the car and activated the alarm. She headed towards the elevator that would take her to her apartment, the sound of Elaine's flip-flops echoing throughout the area. Emma simply shook her head."You have shoes. Why are you walking around like that? You know you look ridiculous. What are you doing in the parking lot?" Emma complained, but she didn't really care. Chapter 30

Max stood under the cold shower, his head down, eyes closed, with the image of Emma when they had sex in the dining room that morning. It had been three days since he saw her in his apartment and couldn't kiss her. The worst part for him was that he hadn't run into her again, and this afternoon, she left early. He was indeed being intense and needed to calm down. It was finally Friday, and he was getting ready to go to his father's house. It was his birthday. He let out a sigh and turned off the faucet, then walked out naked in search of a towel. When he stood in front of the mirror, he wiped away the steam with his hand and finally saw his reflection, damp and glistening."Du bist am Arsch, Max," he said in German, which meant, "You're screwed, Max." Then he started getting ready to go to his father's house, who had already called several times to confirm if he was on his way.Once he parked his car in front of his father's grand mansion, he told himself that he wouldn't tell him abo
