Chapter 11

Emily's POV A shot ricocheted through the dark and dank basement, sending my heart into overdrive. I gave a loud gasp that sent Ethan looking straight into my eyes. I watched as his eyes widened and he mouthed the word: fuck. What I didn't wait to hear was him calling out my name.I turned and raced out of the basement, darting up the stairs, the taste of fear lingering on my tongue. My breath was ragged and my heart thundered against my ribcage as I raced through the house, hearing his footsteps behind me."Emily!" He called out again, but I didn't stop. I reached my bedroom before him and closed the door behind me. My hands shook as I turned the key, not stopping until I heard the satisfying click. I quickly took a shaky breath to calm my jumpy nerves, but there was no time to take more breaths. Not with him hot on my heels, the memory of his murderous face imprinted on my mind. I knew what he would do to me if I wasted any time. I knew I had to act fast.My entire body shook as I

Chapter 12

Chloe's POVI stormed out of Ethan's house, my anger boiling over like a heated storm. Anger at Ethan for supporting that miserable girl over his own birth mother, anger at that pathetic excuse for a surrogate mother, anger at myself for insisting that Ethan got me someone to bear our child. One of Ethan's guards rushed to me to escort me outside, but I shooed him off with an impatient wave of my habd I didn't need his help, or that of anyone else who worked with him to feel better. Ethan and his cronies could go to hell for all I cared. And what was worse was how he'd threatened me when I'd opened my mouth to defend his mother. What was wrong with him? Had that puny surrogate mother charmed him so well he didn't know where his priorities lied again?I pushed open the door and walked out. The cool evening air did little to soothe my hatred and anger as I made my way to my car. Frustration made me clench my fists, and I could feel my heart beating erratically in my chest, drowning out

Chapter 13

Emily's POVSeveral weeks had passed after Chloe had stumbled on Ethan Brown and I. In those weeks, Ethan had basically ignored my presence. It was as though whatever private discussion he'd had with his fiancée had been for the worst. I'd only seen him once during those weeks, and that had been when he'd instructed Zadok to fetch me from my room to have a very quiet breakfast with him.Throughout that breakfast, Ethan had been very reserved, barely meeting my eyes even as I'd thrown question after question at him. In the end he'd snapped and told me to keep my questions and let him have a peaceful breakfast. Ethan was an asshole, I'd always known that, but his attitude had surprised me.Right now I was standing before a full-length mirror in my room, utterly naked and cradling my belly. A tiny bump was starting to show already, nothing more than what I would have seen had I had a very full meal. I hadn't eaten today—my tray of breakfast was on the coffee table in the room, untouched.

Chapter 14

Ethan's POVI wasn't prepared for the human storm that hit my office that afternoon. Before it came, I was standing behind my desk, with a glass of brandy in my hands, staring out the French windows at the busy downtown sight.I owned almost half of the city, but sometimes the thought of it made me sad instead of elated. The mafia lifestyle was demanding. It took the best out of you and made you neglect the things that truly made you happy, leaving you nothing but a shell of your former, happier self. I'd been born into this life: from my cradle I'd been taught that I existed simply to move our family legacy forward. Forge alliances with other mafia families, trade and smuggle ammo and other forbidden goods, buy more property to add to the family's already sprawling estate: the list went on. I'd never been given the opportunity to pursue my own singular interest, but for as long as I could remember, I'd wanted to have children of my own and raise them free of the burdens that came wit

Chapter 15

Emily's POVSomething smelled good, I thought as I took a deep breath in my sleep. I wondered what it could be. I sniffed again, half expecting the nauseating smell that came with morning sickness, but it didn't come. All I smelled was the slightly sweet scent of something baking.I sat up suddenly and opened my eyes. It was night already, the balcony filled with milky light from the moon above. The ceiling above me was white, which was quite different from the painted murals I was used to staring up at in my room. Where was I?It too me a good minute of groggily staring around to realise that I was in one of the many balconies that lined Ethan's mansion.I groaned and rubbed my eyes, then stood to my feet. I'd fallen asleep on a recliner, and my flimsy robe had slipped, exposing my bare thighs and other more embarrassing things. My cheeks heated up in abashment as I tied the robe more securely around me and looked around, hoping no one had seen me. Only a gardener stood directly unde

Chapter 16

The platter of Bundt cake left my hands and went flying into the air, landing somewhere close to Ethan Brown's feet. Hot pain immediately shot up my arm. My elbows tingled with agony. I was aware of my robe which was trailing on the ground, exposing my bare body underneath. My cheeks flushed in embarrassment again. Man, today was so not a good day.I heard footsteps as Zadok rushed towards me and stretched out his hand to help me up. "Are you okay, Miss Davis?""Yeah," I grunted, accepting his hand. "Yeah, I'm fine."Zadok helped me to my feet, and I pulled my silky robes more securely around me. I let go of his hand, and immediately a wave of dizziness came over me. "Whoa there!" Ethan's second in command called out, holding me before I hit the ground again. "Let's get you up to your room, miss.""No, Zadok. I'm fine, promise." I murmured and looked up towards Ethan. His face was a mask of pure rage. Immediately he saw that I was well and good, he crossed the large foyer towards Flo

Chapter 17

Emily's POV The gun fight was all I could dream of. I saw it being recreated into my nightmares, but this time it was Ethan Brown being shot by Floyd Alderman. It was Ethan's blood that stained the clean tiled floor, and Ethan who squirmed while being carried out.I screamed his name frantically until my eyes flew open. I rolled over and saw that I was on the bed in my room, several metres away from the foyer and the gun fight that had happened there. I frowned and sat up, wondering how I had gotten to be on the bed. The last thing I remembered was that cracking of the gun and the whistling of the bullet as it had shot past me and buried itself in the ceramic pot. It wasn't the last thing per se, as I'd also remembered another gun shot, and the pained cry of a wounded man.Ethan Brown had shot Floyd Alderman.Ethan Brown had shot Floyd Alderman! The weight behind those words finally sank in and I gasped in fear, then threw aside the bed covers and flung my feet down to the rug. Emily's POV The woman walked slowly into the kitchen, eyes narrowed as she looked at us suspiciously. My eyes darted from her immaculate blonde bob to her perfectly manicured nails. And those heels! How could she walk so effortlessly on those 7-inch high daggers? The sight of her repulsed as well as amazed me. "I heard you had a gun fight with Floyd of all people. Floyd Alderman!" She gasped."News travel so fast, doesn't it?"Chloe laughed smugly and walked forward. She stopped in front of the kitchen tabletop and her eyes caught the chocolate cake Ethan had baked, half of which was already gone. "Oh, great! There's cake. I'm starving!"Ethan and I watched as she pulled the platter towards herself. Then she reached forward and plucked Ethan's fork neatly from his grasp and began digging into the cake. The entire kitchen was fraught with silence as she took the first bite of the cake. Her eyes widened."Damn! Who baked this? That servant should be given a pay raise, for real." She

Emily POV… It was a cold night, and the rain continued to swatter, As tossed to and fro on my bed, however, I found it strenuous to shut my eyes. The thought of Ethan and Chloe together was something I would rather not imagine. For some reason, I couldn't understand why I suddenly became jealous of them. I blamed myself for everything that had happened if I hadn't slept with Ethan just for help. my mother, I wouldn't be in this mess today. Finding it so restless to sleep, I spun out of bed, and picked up a pitcher of water; however, it was devoid. Chapter 20

CHAPTER NINETEENEthan's POVI stood beside the bed and waited until Emily was fast asleep, her light snores reverberating through the room. She looked so peaceful when she slept, the woman. Soft and care-free, as though she had not a burden in the world. She murmured something as she slept, then rolled over to the other side.It was funny how much had changed since she came into my life, how she seemed to have turned the trajectory of my life, my purpose, my ambition. She'd given me the one thing, the only thing I wished for above all else: a child. If only she knew just how much she meant to me.I sighed and turned away from the bed, my smile morphing into a scowl as I moved to the door. Now, I had to face the hardest part of my day. I reached the door and wrapped my fingers around the doorknob, taking a moment to sigh. I glanced back at Emily, who was still snoring peacefully on the bed, her face made pale by the slanting moonlight from the window above her. She shouldn't see thi
