Chapter 71

Bella looked up at the stage to see Sarah beckoning her. "Come along, darling. That's enough dancing. We still haven't had cake, and you've only opened one of your presents," Sarah said. The orchestra stopped playing in unison, and the sudden stop made it sound as if the needle had been pulled from a record. Bella turned back to Victor for guidance. He touched her face with a gloved hand. Before she could register what he was doing, he pulled her in for a deep kiss that called everything in her world into question. The kiss made her heart ache with betrayal, and yet she returned it with far too much passion, desperate for more. As long as their lips touched, there were no vampires or werewolves or psychotic party hosts. There was no Daria, either. In that moment, Bella and Victor were the only things that existed, a single entity. The kiss was over much too soon. If Victor hadn't held her for a moment while she got her bearings, she knew her legs would give out on her.

Chapter 72

"Like I said, I laid the framework in your mind a long time before Jeff and his old man came into the picture and you were just fine. I did it to protect you, to keep both sides dormant until it was time for you to embrace who you really are." She sighed. "That idiot werewolf expedited things by marking you, of course, but everything I've done has been to protect you.""You're lying," Bella said, backing away from her. "You don't care about protecting me. If you did, you wouldn't have abandoned me. You wouldn't have let me spend eighteen years of my life moving from one home to another, wondering what I had done to make you hate me so much that you would leave me." Tears streamed down her face as she struggled to keep herself together. "If you gave a shit about me, you would have stopped the abuse, the neglect, the loneliness. You would have done something before now, anything to let me know that I was something more than trash you threw away." She listened without a

"I know you're upset I wasn't there to protect you when you were younger, but I made sure that Jeff paid for his sins and I'm about to give you the gift of revenge against the other man who tormented you," she continued, resting her hands on her shoulders. Bella squinted and tried to block out the light with her hand. "Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you your clan leader, Phillip Alderdice in all his glory." Jeff's father was suspended on a huge wooden panel, naked except for his white cotton underpants, suspenders and socks. His usually intimidating visage was dashed as he hung from the board, his gut exposed as he hung and writhed from the four posts his arms and legs were tied to. "As you can see, this present requires a bit more disassembly than the last one." Sarah withdrew a wooden stake identical to the one I had found in Jeff's heart and offered it to her. Bella shook her head, horrified. "I can't." "I thought you might say that," Sarah said,

Bella smiled. "Timing was never our thing.""Oh, so you remember me for once," he said, walking over to stand in front of her. "You're a hard dream to track down, you know that, kiddo?""Hey, I'm older than you now, even if it's only for a moment in whatever year this is," Bella said, gesturing to the illusion around them.He shrugged. "Time, space, it all kind of blends together in a place like this. It's all based on theoretical physics you wouldn't understand, being a social sciences dweeb and all that.""Is that so?" Bella laughed. She looked around the room, then back at him. "How many times have you visited me?""About once a month. The full moon heightens my abilities and makes it easier to find you, but I'm working with a really good teacher at the temple now. I'm getting better every day.""I'm sure you are." "I'm getting to know you better, too," he murmured thoughtfully. "You know, I think you're the only person in the world I can have the same conversation with

Chapter 75

Although Bella had been sure that all her hidden memories had already been put back in place, the moment she looked at Mr. Alderdice, an entire missing chunk of her life flashed before her eyes in the cinematic display she had been expecting during her near-death experience in the woods.Sarah was right. She hadn't been seeing Mr. Alderdice for the person he was. Now that the wall in her mind was removed, she could see the lies and the betrayal that clung to him like filth. She could remember the family dinners that would end in him leading her off under some thin guise only to pin her down on the bed in his room and sink his fangs into her neck. She could feel him tearing off her clothes as he covered her mouth with his other hand so she couldn't scream, all while the door was wide open. She saw the thrill in his eyes when Mrs. Alderdice had finally walked in on them one night, and she realized that was half the game for him. She saw the exact scar she had drawn a

Chapter 76

Bella spun sharply on the crowd. "You all fucking watched, didn't you?" She snarled. A familiar growl built in her chest, and the lights flickered overhead. They had flickered that night, too, as one silhouette after another eclipsed the light over her head during intermittent periods of consciousness. The crowd said nothing. "What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" Bella laughed. If she didn't laugh, it felt like she was going to scream. "None of you said anything then, either, and why would you? You thought I was just another human blood slave to sate your every twisted desire." She scanned the crowd, making note of every face she remembered from that night. "I never did anything to any of you!" Tears threatened to spill, but she held them back by force of will. "You're monsters. Every fucking one of you." "That they are," Sarah said, suddenly beside her. She squeezed Bella's shoulder in what seemed almost like a genuine gesture of sympathy. She opened Bella's

Champagne. Chandeliers. The most exquisite collection of men and women who had ever been gathered in a room, all draped in silks and brocades in a variety of rich hues, were dancing and mingling on the floor. A jazz band played with precise timing and a wealth of soul. Everything was warmth, bliss, electric energy buzzing as if something truly spectacular was going to happen at any moment. And then it did. The band started playing a different tune, one far more regal than lively. Everyone took note of the silver thrones on the center of the stage and turned to focus on the doors behind them. Applause thundered and the partygoers lifted glasses of some red nectar as they welcomed the guests of honor. It was Bella and Sarah. She was wearing a golden strapless gown, looking the part of a Hollywood starlet from the early thirties. Bella was draped in a flowing silver suit, smiling proudly and looking the part of a proper prince as she shook hands with the guests sh

Chapter 78

"She doesn't care!" Bella's heart clenched as she remembered her own role in that last vision. "The thing that makes her like this is inside of me, too. It's part of me, just as much as being a wolf is. I felt it. The fact that she suppressed that side of me is probably the only reason I'm not like her." He lowered the stake reluctantly and tilted Bella's chin toward him. "You're not like her because you're not her. Period.""If I let you kill her, I will be," Bella said, refusing to break eye contact. His jaw clenched in frustration but he grabbed Bella's hand and dragged her toward the stairs. "Let's go."They were barely off the stage when they heard, "Isn't that sweet?" They both froze as Sarah's voice rang out from behind them. When Bella turned, she saw Sarah already on her feet, wiping the lip that had been split open in her fall."Your boyfriend is right, though, sweetie. You should really listen to him more. He is the smart one," she said, stalking towar

Bella couldn't look at Victor even though he was now free to move around. It wasn't his condemnation that she feared but rather his pity. She knew it would be waiting for her the moment she looked into his eyes, and she couldn't stomach it. Not now.Sarah had called the rest of her troupe out, or at least everyone who was present at the gathering. Saban watched her with a surprisingly sympathetic gaze and the peddler who had given her the drugged rose in the airport kept making off-color jokes about the whole sordid affair. The only other woman in the group said nothing at all but kept a watchful eye on her and Victor the entire time. The other vampires in Sarah's troupe were all drinking and having a grand old time while the party guests watched them from the dance floor. One of the heavily controlled waiters walked by the edge of the stage where they were sitting and she snatched a glass of wine off his tray. She waited for Victor to protest when she guzzled the entire

If Sarah noticed her lack of reaction, she said nothing."Then I'll leave the pack," said Victor. From the look on her face, his words surprised Sarah as much as they surprised Bella. "Just let me stay by his side." "A loyal dog," she said once she'd recovered from her shock, "but a dog all the same." She watched him with crossed arms and an appraising gaze she didn't like at all. "I guess it would be a hoot to keep one of Ulric's beloved packmates as a guard dog," she mused. "He doesn't know what she's saying," Bella interrupted, ignoring the stern look Victor was giving her."The hell I don't."Sarah sighed. "Alright, children, we'll fight it out later. For now, be a good boy and try to make yourself less of an imposition, hm, Victor?"He remained silent but Bella could feel his anger, refined and smoldering."Can we just get this over with?" Bella pleaded. "This is not a punishment, little one," said Saban. His deep, rich voice at once chided and soothed her
