THEY MADE it to the hotel in record time. Because they were early, traffic wasn't bad yet. Their security team maintained crowd control as they stepped out of the limousine. They were like a pride of lions, confident and powerful. Every step was graceful and commanding as if they own the very ground beneath their feet. Their eyes were sharp and intense, but their smile carried enough spark to warm the place. A red carpet was aligned perfectly up the enormous stairs leading to the entrance of the hotel. Reporters, paparazzi, fans, and whatnot were already behind the barriers of the stairs, clicking photos, shooting questions, and cheering hysterically. Le Grand Château was befitting of its name. From the vast, sophisticated lobby, down the wide hallways covered in luxurious Oriental rugs, to the entranceway into the ballroom, the place was awash in flowers and tiny white lights and golden gauze bows. Pale orchids in cream and lavender emitted a subtle fragrance. The hotel w

SIXTY-ONE

JASON FOLLOWED her gaze to the center of her attention. He sighed when his eyes met him and forced a smile. "Yup!" He replied nonchalantly. "Your Adam Cupid. I figured you'd want to meet him in person." "But it's your birthday, not mine. Why are you giving me such a precious gift?" Evelyn squeaked in a tiny, subdued voice. Swooning. Her eyes not leaving the gorgeous specimen walking towards them, not even for a second. "Wow! he's way hotter in person." Jason frowned, giving her an intense, sidelong glance. Was this how other guys felt when their girlfriends drool whenever they see him? Jason leaned over and whispered into her ear, "Okay, don't stare at him like that. You're getting me jealous." But, Evelyn was totally deaf to the world. When Adam Cupid finally reach them he said a "Hey, Happy Birthday" in a smooth, vibrating baritone to Jason. Jason stretched out his arm, shaking him in that universal, macho handshake that involved clutching each other hands,

"MARCUS! REPLACE that dress with the top most trendy dress from last month. Let's add that to the collection!" Aubrey called to Marcus who was dressing one of the mannequins "Yes, ma'am!" Marcus jeered humorously, saluting. "Tess! Lola! Those mannequins are not properly dressed. Please, straighten out the crease," Aubrey blurted to the other girls. "Lilly! Come give me a with this pile of fabric." Meanwhile, Evelyn was in her office compiling the designs in her sketchbook. Two days after Jason's grand birthday, Celine Philippe contacted her and notified her that she would be at the showroom in two days. Which was today. The air around the showroom had been filled with anticipation as they prepared for the momentous day. In an hour, she received a text from Celine that she was arriving. Evelyn hurried out to the showroom where her assistants were waiting. "Guys, guys, guys..." Evelyn surged in clapping to get their attention. They stood up from their various seats r

SIXTY-THREE

THE NEIGHBORHOOD where Dr. Adam Fletcher had been last seen was situated in a warren of narrow streets, lined with shabby houses and ramshackle stores. There were a few trees, and those that were there were gaunt and half-dead. The sounds of the neighborhood were a cacophony of music and voices, the smell of exotic spices and cooking fires filled the air. The streets were filled with children playing, their laughter echoing off the walls of the houses. The sidewalks were cracked and uneven, and trash was piled up in corners. The air was thick with the smell of garbage and decay. When Evelyn got to the exact address she'd been given, she rapped softly on the run-down door with fear it may fall off its hinges. This place was desperately in need of renovation. After reading her sister's last diary a couple of days ago, Evelyn decided she needed to find Doctor Fletcher, who had been the one responsible for Jason's mother's treatment all these while until recently. If there w

A WEEK later and Evelyn was still skeptical about telling Jason about everything that was going on. With how genuine he'd been expressing his feelings for her, she knew she should be able to trust him by now, but she wasn't sure if it was factual or if it was just all an act. Especially now she'd found out her sister couldn't trust him either. It wasn't that difficult evading him these days, anyway. Ever since the release of his album, Jason had been in one show or the other, one signing event or the other, and every other stuff musical artists do during their music promotion. Evelyn had a lot on her plate. She'd waited for one longanimous week to get a response from Dr. Adam Fletcher which never came. She'd been trying to remain reasonable to avoid taking drastic measures she may regret for life. A knock on her office door drew her attention from her troubling thought. "Hey, there!" Julia singsonged, bearing carry-outs in her hands. When Julia balanced the food c

REALIZING HOW less time he'd spent with Evelyn since the release of his album, Jason cleared his schedule for the day and decided to take her on a lunch date, ravaging her with some delicious delicacies. In his car, close to her showroom, he caught sight of her waving for a cab. Because he was stuck at red light and he didn't want to lose sight of her, he rang her phone, but to his dismay, she lied that she was at Doris' while he was clearly watching her get into a cab. Did she really didn't want to have lunch with him so bad that she had to lie to evade him? Was she mad at him for being scarce lately? When the traffic light flickered to green, Jason contemplated turning back to where he came from or completing the distance to Evelyn's showroom. He chose the latter. When he pulled over at the curb and found Evelyn's chauffeur hanging around the entrance and out of curiosity, he asked where Evelyn was headed and why he didn't go with her. "Sir, she said my ser

EVELYN INHALED, stirring groggily. Her eyes fluttered open as she slowly began to regain consciousness. Her vision was still blurred as she struggled to figure out how where she was. She was in a dimly lit room, the only light coming from a single bulb hanging from the ceiling. The room was bare, save for a few cardboard boxes and a single, metal chair that sat in front of her. She tried to sit straight, but a wave of dizziness and nausea hit her and she slumped back down. Her head throbbed, and as she raised her hand to reach for the back of her head, she realized that her wrists were chained to the arms of the metal chair she was sitting on and as her eyes adjusted to the dim light, she could see that her ankles were shackled to the legs of the chair. She winced as she strained her head, striving to remember how she had gotten here, then her memory came surging with maximum force. She began to call out, hoping someone would hear her and come to her aid. As she strugg

SIXTY-SEVEN

SEVEN YEARS AGO: THE DAY OF CLARISSA'S DEATH... Clarissa was disheartened and looked all ruffled up as she trudged reluctantly away from Jason's mansion. Like having that horrible fight with her little sister wasn't enough for one day, that lunatic Diane Smithson had to show up and launched her latest exhibition of obsession on her. But how had she found out about Olivia's biological father? Clarissa thought. Julia was the only person she'd told about this. No one else. Not even her family. She was already suspicious of Julia, especially after she'd found out about her background which Julia had so flawlessly lied about. She'd still given her the benefit of the doubt because probably she might have been ashamed of her past. But disclosing what she'd told her in confidentiality was not acceptable. Clarissa pulled out her phone in the intention of confronting Julia about it but her weak voice over the phone discouraged her. Instead of confronting her, she resulted to as

JASON DIDN'T care if the criminals were successfully disarmed by the cops, his priority was Evelyn. His heart was pounding in his chest, and his hands trembling as his eyes scanned the room for any sign of the woman he loved. Then he saw her. She was sitting on a metal chair, her hands bound to it. Her eyes were closed, her face was slightly bruised and her cloth bloodied. But she was still breathing, and he felt a rush of relief wash over him. He ran to her side, dropping to his knees and gently lifting her head, checking her body for any other sign of injury. "Are you okay?" He asked, his voice hoarse with emotion. "Ja--Jason! She did it. She--she killed Clarissa," Evelyn stuttered, her eyes unsteady. "She killed my sister." Jason nodded. "Shh! Shh! I know. I know," said softly, trying to free her from her bonds. "Get the keys to this damn thing." One of the uniform officers passed him the bunch of keys he found on the table while the rest fanned out, securi

SIXTY-NINE

"JASON...?" Evelyn searched his pale and weak face as his eyes fluttered open and focused on her. When he saw her, a smile broke out on his face. "Hey!" Jason whispered, his voice hoarse from disuse. Evelyn's heart swelled with relief. "I was so worried about you," she said, her voice shaking. "Are you okay?" He reached up to brush her face but she took his hand in midway and squeezed it gently. "I think I'm okay now," he said. "You think?" Evelyn dropped his hand, abruptly. "You think...?" She began to beat his chest softly in feigning annoyance as Jason laughed and groaned weakly. "Do you know how worried I was? I thought I'd lost you. How could you scare me like that? How dare you try to die on me?" Evelyn said, still thumping his chest. "Aw! Evy..." Jason winced. "I'm a patient, remember?" "Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to hit hard," He rubbed the front of the blue and white striped hospital attire. "My chest hurt." Evelyn caressed his che
