Chapter 10 - The Law Of Misfortune

It was after school one day when William and Cailen were playing in the living room that everything went down the toilet. They were just having fun, William had challenged Cailen to a handstand contest and said Cailen was too afraid to try it. So naturally, Cailen just had to prove him wrong.William had already done his, falling over on his first attempt but succeeding in staying up for about five seconds on his second try. William looked smug when he planted his feet on the ground, insisting that Cailen couldn't possibly do better and waiting impatiently for him to gather the courage to try.The thing was that he didn't want William to think he was boring and no fun.He wanted William to keep liking him and wanting to play with him because he liked playing with William. He knew it was stupid to get so attached when he'd probably be sent back at any moment but Cailen couldn't help himself. He just kind of enjoys being William’s big brother. He didn't know how because really, they did

Chapter 11 - The First Person

"Send him back?" Eden asked, looking to her curly haired son. "What on earth..." she trailed off as she took in the pleading eyes of her son, the worried look of her daughter and the completely regretful and scared look on Cailen. She sighed again, wiping at Cailen's face one more time before setting the cloth down."Stella, William, go get Dean. Ask him to clean up the vase, please," Eden instructed. The children looked troubled, as if they weren't sure they should listen to their mother for fear of Cailen being sent back without their consent. It was probably better this way, Cailen thought, less embarrassing and all."But Mom-""Go," she said firmly, shutting William up and watching as Stella led him away to go get Dean.Eden turned back to Cailen. He had more tears running down his cheeks. His tears really had nothing to do with the pain in his wrist but the fear of being sent away.He hadn't realized just how attached he had gotten here. Not just to William but to Stella and Eden

Chapter 12 - Dreams Shattered

"On Monday, you won't be going to school, love," Eden explained. She was sitting on the edge of Cailen's bed, brushing some hair out of his face while Dean stood beside the bed, looking down at him.It was hard not to jump to conclusions with what Eden had said. Cailen immediately thought they were returning him to the orphanage because, why else would he be not going to school?"We've got to go back to the orphanage and talk about the arrangements," Dean added, not doing anything to change Cailen's assumptions."We've got to fill out some paperwork and then head down to the adoption agency," Eden said with a smile.Cailen frowned at this. Adoption Agency?"Why?" Cailen asked, not following what they were telling him."Cailen, it'll be one month on Monday," Eden explained sweetly.Cailen was shocked. He's never made one month before or even anywhere near it. He'd nearly forgotten there was a second step to all this.He was so used to just being moved in and out of different families,

Chapter 13 - Proof Of Love

Cailen woke up in an emergency room.Or what he was guessing was the emergency room.He was lying in a bed that was a in room surrounded with white walls. Wherever he looked, or his eyes land on- because he can’t really move his head around to look properly at his surroundings- were color white. The walls, the ceiling, the curtain by the window- everything. He hurt everywhere and couldn't help but groan when he tried to move."Cailen?" A small worried voice came from his right.Cailen tried to turn his head towards William’s voice, but he groaned again when pain hit him. He took a deep breath and that even hurts too.He tried to calm down and tried again- more gently and carefully this time. He slowly turned his head to see William standing beside his bed, his curly hair in a disarray, green eyes red and puffy as if he had been crying."Hi, William," Cailen smiled weakly at him before something caught his attention at the corner of his eyes.He slowly turned his head to see Matthew

Chapter 14 - Back Again

7 years later…Cailen sat in the backseat of the taxi, staring out the window at the familiar roads of Beverwood. It was the first time he's been home since he went off to university two years ago. He realized what a dick move that was but Eden and Dean were very understanding that he needed to focus on his studies. He felt really bad about lying to them, because of course, he could have made time to come home for Christmas at least but he didn't. He was worried that being around them would make them see through his mask he's worked so hard to construct. He knew he couldn't be his true self around his family or they wouldn't accept him. He learned early on that he needed to act more like other boys or Eden and Dean wouldn't have kept him. That's not to say he is a completely different person around them, no, just... More reserved in a way. There were certain things he didn't discuss with them or around them, certain things he didn't do around them and he was okay with that. Pretending

Chapter 15 - Missing Out

Eden spun around in confusion, her eyes searching the room until they landed on Cailen. She gasped as well, dropping her oven mitts on the ground. Cailen thanks whatever god is up there that she wasn't holding a roast or something.Stella turned as well, wondering who could have caused such a reaction and squealed when she saw him."Cailen! You came!" Stella said excitedly, making her way around the kitchen to pull him into a hug.Cailen chuckled and wrapped his arms around her waist, hugging her tightly but also being cautious of the knife she still held in her hand."If you poke me with that thing, I'm gone," Cailen teased as he pulled away, eyeing the knife. She grinned at him, then turned to set the knife down. Cailen actually saw Stella not too long ago so she really hadn't changed a whole lot since then. The only thing that's changed is she may have gotten a hair cut, but Caile

Chapter 16 - The Boy From Seven Years Ago

Asher looked up and met Cailen's cerulean eyes.He smiled shyly at Cailen and he didn't blame him because he knew he was staring but he couldn't pull his eyes from him."Hey, Cai," Asher said awkwardly with a small wave.Cailen really had to pull it together. He knew that but he couldn't believe this was Asher. He couldn't believe this was little scrawny Asher. Asher that begged him to tell on the bullies in school. Asher who cries at Toy Story, every time.Asher who always made sure to include Cailen at the parties he was invited to. He couldn't believe this was Asher."Jesus, what's in the water here?" Cailen joked, trying to cover up his utter shock and possible drool. All four boys chuckled at Cailen, even Noah who really didn't know him."I should have stuck around. I seemed to have missed the puberty bus," Cailen joked, looking down at his s

Chapter 17 - Unexpected

"This summer is going to be ace," Matthew informed the other four boys while they waited for their food to arrive. They were sat in a local diner that they always used to eat at. Cailen supposed they still ate here. It was only him that used to eat here before. They sat in a booth with Matthew, William and Noah squished in on one side and Asher and Cailen sitting comfortably on the other. Cailen was looking around at the diner, seeing it really hadn't changed a bit.It still had the old beat up chairs and tables, the red booths still had rips in them, if not more, but Cailen loved it all the same.It was a piece of home and Cailen wouldn't change it even if he could."Yeah, we'll actually be able to score some beer without begging people to buy it for us," Noah said, grinning at Matthew.Matthew snorted. "Who said you wouldn't have to beg? I want you on

Chapter 18 - First Sign

The two boys silently climbed the stairs to William's room together, Cailen flopping on the bed when they got there and William flopping down beside him.William's room looked like any other teenager's room.A bed against the wall in the middle, a desk on the far wall that had his school bag hanging from the office chair there, and a TV on the opposite wall of his bed, facing the bed so he could watch while laying down. There were band posters lining the walls along with school awards and sports medals, most of them being the award for 'most improved' or 'hardest working' because William really wasn't very coordinated and tended to fall a lot but that didn't stop him from trying."What do you think happened?" William asked, finally breaking the silence."I don’t know. She'd tell us if someone died, right?" Cailen asked.William nodded."Could be nothing... She really could be

Chapter 19 - Connection

When Cailen first saw Asher come out of the bathroom the first day he came back, he was surprised and very pleased with who Asher had turned into. Now, seeing him nearly naked, jogging into the water, took his breath away.Asher had a defined chest with a growing six pack abs, his arms were muscled but nicely toned and that's all Cailen could see in the faint light the moon offered but that's all he neede- or could handle because he was fairly certain- anymore, and his brain might short-circuit."What are you gonna do about it?" Asher asked, grinning at Cailen as he approached but he wasn't capable of speech right now. "Hmm?" Asher encouraged and frowned when all Cailen could do was stare. "Cai? Are you okay? I didn't hurt you, did I? Cai?""Hm, what? No! No, I'm fine," Cailen said quickly but Asher continued to frown at him, probabl
