Chapter 11

Caroline*****My favorite day! Friday. It's literally the best. Just a few hours of torture at school and then freedom for a whole two days. I wondered if I could be named Friday like Wednesday Addams. Probably not, she was way hotter than me.Fuck, why did I smoke before school?Groaning, I dragged my feet as I stared at the sidewalk leading out of the neighborhood. I was just starting it and I had so far to go. Why didn't I take the damn bus?Somehow, I remembered to plug my earbuds in and scrolled through my Spotify to find a decent playlist. There were an embarrassing number of Selena Gomez albums in there. I picked the Mac DeMarco playlist that had been stuck in my head. Each step became slightly more bearable.Honey, the stars keep on calling my nameBut don't worry, I've told you again and againWhen I'm down, you're always the first one to knowSkipping town, I'll take you wherever I goI finally turned onto the Main Street and started towards school. Chapter 12

Okay, this wasn't too bad. The bleachers filled in as the game started and by half-time, it didn't feel like I was even sitting alone. It didn't hurt that Greg was a pretty good quarterback. My football knowledge was limited but I could see that he was agile and had an impressive arm, despite being built like a linebacker. I even found myself yelling and hooting with the rest of the crowd as we scored touchdown after touchdown. At the final buzzer, my fellow spectators poured out of the bleachers. The old lady who sat next to me with her walker needed assistance so I waited with her until everyone was gone. Then I held her hand and guided her down to the ramp."Aren't you a sweet girl," she cooed at the bottom.I chuckled. "Less sweet, more sour."She patted my arm with a laugh. "Thank you, dear. My son is just over there. He'll help me to the car."Her son? That piece of shit wasn't here to help her down the stairs? My eyes followed her finger to the blue and white jacket hanging off

Chapter 13

Marshall*****She wore her heart in her eyes. I could see every desire, every ounce of adoration and trust, teeming in those hazel green eyes. In the dark, lying beneath me, she looked more like a fallen angel than anything a holy god would keep around. She was sin embodied, my personal elixir. Wavy golden hair, bright eyes, and never-ending curves. My hand stroked down her side while she blinked up at me. Trustingly. She shouldn't trust me. I was a true monster under all these human layers. I was arrogant, not blind. Although I was obsessed with her and knew deep in my bones that I would never get bored of her, I also knew what I was incapable of.Love! If I couldn't feel love for my own parents or siblings, I was incapable. My angel was a sensitive being, though she tried to hide it. She wanted love. I knew it was the one thing I'd never be able to give her.Not that it mattered. She would be mine, regardless of whether she wanted to be. From the moment I set eyes on her, I wanted

Chapter 14

Caroline*****Yawning, I slowly roused from my sleep. A sweet smell lifted into my nostrils, beckoning me to get up. I sat up and pushed the covers down. My jeans were all tangled down around my ankles. I frowned as last night returned to the forefront of my mind.Marshall! I jumped and looked around but there was no evidence of him or his presence. No note or anything. Oh shit. He wasn't out there . . . in the kitchen . . . Was he? I sprang out of the bed and instantly tripped over my jeans. Huffing, I kicked them off and yanked on a pair of sleep shorts from my dresser. I moved the chair from the door knob and hurried out.Freya smiled at me from the stove. I glanced around the kitchen but it was empty. She chuckled. "Good morning to you, too, sleepyhead. Looking for someone?""I—" I swallowed. "Oh, I just wondered if, uh, Valentina was still here.""Yeah, she's worse than you. Still in bed."I relaxed and padded over to her. When my eyes locked sight on the golden pancakes in her

Caroline*****Greg showed up at 7:29. I hurried out to the door, waving farewell at Freya and Valentina from their spot on the couch."Wait, where are you going?" Freya asked."The senior bonfire is tonight," I told her. "I won't stay out too late."She shrugged. "Stay out as late as you want, but be responsible. No teen pregnancies or DUIs, okay?"I saluted her and grabbed the door knob."And you look hot by the way!" she shouted as I slipped outside."Thanks!" I shouted back.Nervous, I glanced down at my outfit and wondered if I was going to be overdressed. I was wearing black jeans and a cropped sweater with combat boots. Just for good measure, I brought a coat with a hood on it in case I really did freeze my ass off.Greg honked as I scuttled over to his freshly waxed BMW. I jumped into the passenger seat."Well, I'll be damned, Wilder," he said with a smirk. "You don't look like a nerd tonight."I chuckled. "Is that supposed to be a compliment?"My eyes roamed over his tan Carh

Chapter 16

Marshall*****Los Angeles was a mad house even early on Sunday morning. Our flight touched down at five and Nuel and I rented a car. We were driving first to the address where his phone was tracked to. It wasn't one I recognized but I wasn't surprised he still lived in LA. This was all he ever knew.It was almost seven-thirty when we rolled up to a white stucco cottage with an orange tiled roof. I nodded and we got out, hands on the weapons at our waist. If I wasn't so impatient, we could've picked up some guns here. I had many connections to this city, the homeland of the Tare family legacy. I didn't want to make unnecessary visits or waste any time. So, we were making do with blades.Nuel went to the door while I circled the house. All the windows were dark. As I reached the back of the house, I slipped into the gated yard and crept up to the back door. I could hear the doorbell ringing through the empty walls.I had a feeling Atlas wasn't here. He knew better. I was pleased that h

Chapter 17

Caroline*****Warm. So warm. I sighed and moved underneath the sheets but found my body heavier than I expected. Thinking it would maybe be better on my side, I attempted to roll over. A hand clasped my breast, fingers tensing around my nipple."Stalker," I moaned with a small smile. The body spooned against me closer. "Only sometimes," purred a female voice. My eyes shot open. When I turned my head, I found myself looking into a pimply woman's face, her hair a mess around her head. I jumped up realizing that Valentina was in my bed. Her hands fell away from me as she slowly sat up."What are you doing?" I rasped, pulling the sheets up to my neck. "What are you doing here?""I just wanted to cuddle," she said, dipping her head demurely."You have a girlfriend. My cousin. What the fuck, Valentina?"It felt like her hands were still on me, burning me with their dirty touch. I felt disgusted."You touched me," I whispered."Don't be stupid." She rolled her eyes. "You turned and my hand

Chapter 18

Caroline*****My hands smoothed over the soft cotton short-sleeve shirt and distressed jeans I wore. The weather would be reaching the low seventies today, so I didn't have to wear a sweater today. I draped a light leather jacket over my shoulders just in case and grabbed my backpack.Freya had left for work already and I was confident that Valentina wasn't here, since she was always gone during the week. I poured some coffee into a thermos and doused it with half and half. I grabbed a bar from the pantry and turned to leave. My earbuds were already in my ears, blasting some nostalgic Parachute songs, so I didn't hear the presence of another enter the room behind me.When I turned to leave, I was blocked by a bright yellow hoodie in my path. I fell back a step and put a hand over my heart. Valentina snickered as I plucked the ear buds out of my ears. Knowing we were alone in the house unnerved me."Didn't mean to scare you there, Caroline."I backtracked a step to put space between u

Marshall*****The jet touched down late Sunday night. After a series of technical issues, we arrived hours later than expected. I'd only calmed slightly from my earlier panic. It was too painful to consider what I might find when I went to her home. If she was gone, I'd know.Nuel and I split ways at the airport. He left directly for the warehouses and I left for her house. I sped as quickly as I could but it was still nearly midnight when I parked down by the playground. My heart crawled into my throat as I hiked up to her house. Her bedroom window was illuminated. I crept underneath it to peek through a misalignment in the blinds. She was lying in bed, the blue light of her screen glowing on her face. For the first time in hours, I relaxed. I sat there for a long time and just watched her. I was completely exhausted. I hadn't slept well all weekend and the added stress of her possible kidnapping, rape, and murder didn't help.It was much later when she put her phone down and left h

Chapter 20

Caroline*****This feeling was like being on fire with a fire-resistant cape on. My skin burned as bright orange embers on the verge of catching. It was all the deep-bone melting heat without any of the pain, the injury, the scarring.Scalding water tumbled down my naked body. I'd never stood naked in front of a man before. My hands itched to cover myself but I focused on bathing myself. I wanted Marshall like a drug. I secretly hoped I pushed him too far. He didn't think I was ready, but I'd waited for what felt like forever to experience this. For years, other people my age coupled up, found love, reveled in freeing their sexuality. I waited! Waited to meet someone I wanted to do those things with. Someone who didn't think I was a freak or a nerd. I never met anyone who made me want more until Marshall. He took one look at me and set my world ablaze. And I was dancing in the flames. You don't know who you're seducing. His words rang through my skull repeatedly. He wasn't wrong.I d
