#Chapter61Adela pursed her lips and appeared to be considering my offer, but then she started to roar out with laughter. “Not going to happen, but nice try. I will not walk away from the opportunity to watch your blood spill all over this forest floor.” She growled. Thunder was now starting to boom around us, and lightning lit up the night sky, signs of an impending storm. Just like the one that we now faced, a storm between siblings. She smiled broadly. “Goodbye Freja, I won’t miss you.” I closed my eyes, readying myself for the plunge of the blade, but it never came, and suddenly, I was released, collapsing onto the ground. My eyes shot open, and I looked around me, wondering what was going on. Adela lay on the ground, her hand to her head and all three of the vampires were battling it out with none other than my dear brother, Gunnar. I was surprised by his arrival and curious as to how he knew that I needed him but relieved that he was here, here to save my ass. Gu

#Chapter62We had been running for just a few minutes now, but we weren’t fast enough in human form, and I knew if we shifted, we could get back to the house more quickly, where she would be safe. So, I stopped and looked at her. “Do you think your wolf could keep up with mine if we were to shift?” I asked her. She didn’t hesitate to answer me. “Yes, she can. I think it's best if we shift too, we will make it back to the packhouse faster.” I nodded in agreement with her, glad she wasn’t arguing with me on this. We prepared ourselves for the shift but stopped before it could take effect as the sound of a snapping branch grabbed our attention. I whipped my head in the direction of the sound, but there was nothing there but trees. My wolf and I were becoming anxious and tense at the idea of Freja being in danger because of us. Freja came to my side, and I could sense the small amount of fear she was experiencing. I gazed down at her affectionately, hoping to reassure her that things

#Chapter63I stood there, hovering over Adela’s lifeless body and gazed into her soulless eyes, wishing I could have done more to save her from the pain she felt. I crouched down beside her body and closed her eyes shut before kissing her cheek, then I whispered. “I will always love you, Adela, and I forgive you.” I wiped away the wayward tear that streamed down my face and stood back up. Glancing around at my surroundings, I could no longer see Gunnar or Cain or anyone else for that matter. I started to walk North, hoping I would find someone, and I did, but it was the last person I expected to see here. I came to a dead stop, blinking rapidly and thinking that I was imagining things as I stared into those familiar eyes. “Erik?” I said aloud. He rushed over to me and engulfed me in a longing hug. “I have missed you so much, Freja,” Erik whispered sweetly, and I had missed him too. I reared back, “What are you doing here?” I asked him, baffled by his presence. Erik released me but

#Chapter64I squirmed beneath him, trying to buck him off me, but it was no use, and I was trapped beneath him. He snarled and bared his teeth at me, probably hoping that would scare me and I would cooperate with him. However, his actions didn’t frighten me, and I continued to fight him. Erik reached for my wrists, trying to grab ahold of them, and I swatted his hands away before punching him in the jaw. I prayed to the moon goddess for her assistance, as my wolf and I used all our strength to get free. Once again, I pondered where Cain was. Wondering if he was hurt, if he was even alive, and I could only hope that he was alright and would reach me before Erik either killed me or took me away from him. “Ca…” I tried to yell for Cain, but Erik slapped a hand over my mouth and silenced my pleas. He glared down at me. “Shut the fuck up!” I bit down on his hand, causing blood to trickle into my mouth. Erik ripped his hand away from my lips and stared at the teeth marks before lifti

#Chapter65Fear and panic began to rise within me as I stared down at the knife that had struck Cain in the back, just below his shoulder. The blade didn’t appear to be embedded too deep, but blood was now pooling around the wound. I didn’t know what to do, and my frazzled nerves were getting the better of me as my wolf howled with sorrow at the sight of our fallen mate. I leaned down and placed my ear to his back, listening for a heartbeat, and I almost cried at the relief I felt when I heard the faint sound of a beating heart. Reeling back, I did the only thing I could think of and pulled the knife from his back, then tore pieces of my shirt off and tried my best to wrap his wound, hoping to stop the bleeding or at least slow it down enough to get him home. After I had horribly wrapped him up, I stood to my feet and realized that Erik was still here. He was just standing there, appearing to be half dazed, but he also had a look of satisfaction in his eyes. My upper lip twitched, a

#Chapter66Gunnar exhaled heavily. “I will do my best, but he is a big boy, and it may be difficult for me to carry him that far.” He told me truthfully, and I knew it would be a struggle, but if we could get close enough, then I could try to mind-link with someone in the pack to help. He bent down, then flipped Cain over and onto his back before picking him up bridal style and standing to his feet. Gunnar scowled at me, “You fucking owe me big for this shit!” I snorted and gave him a frivolous expression. “Yea, yea. Now come on, we need to hurry.” Gunnar gave me a deadpan stare and shook his head at my impatience; before we started to walk. Now, we faced a new dilemma, finding our way back to the pack house as neither of us was familiar with this land, and trying to navigate through the woods, in the dark, was going to be tricky. As we continued to walk through the dense forest, Gunnar peered down at me. “You still haven’t told me what the fuck is going on, Freja?” He said whil

#Chapter67My eyes fluttered open, but I couldn’t see anything. I was surrounded by darkness and deafening silence as a foul smell invaded my nostrils. My head was pounding, and my body ached like I was tossed around for hours. I slowly sat up, rubbing my forehead and glanced around me, but there was nothing except darkness. I didn’t know where I was, and dread began to rise within me at the possible threats that could be closing in on me. I tried to channel my wolf, hoping to see things through her eyes. However, something seemed off; it was as if she was being suppressed. I could feel her, but not like usual, and it felt like she was fighting to stay with me; this sparked even more apprehension. I closed my eyes, trying to reel her back in, but the more I tried, the deeper she went inside my head and further away from me. Finally, I stopped, afraid that if I continued to reach out for her, I would push her to the point of no return. I inhaled and exhaled heavily, and when I opened

#Chapter68Gunnar looked at me curiously. “Are you sure? You were banged up pretty bad, and you also passed out.” I smiled, knowing that he was concerned for my wellbeing. I opened my mouth to respond when something to the right of me caught my attention. That’s when I realized that Rose was still in the room with us, just standing there in the corner. With all the commotion that just arose, I had forgotten she was even in here. I looked over to her and smiled. “Rose, this is my brother, Gunnar.” Through hooded lashes, she gazed up at him, and a broad smile appeared on her face. Gunnar’s attention was on Rose now, and he seemed trapped in those coffee-coloured eyes of hers for a beat before shaking his head and extending his hand out. Rose’s cheeks turned a shade of light pink as she reached out to shake his hand, but he took her by surprise and kissed the top of her hand, causing her to gasp in delight. Now, this was an intriguing turn of events. As I continued to watch the enc

#Chapter69Her honesty hit me like a train, right in the chest. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, like a piece of me had been shattered. But, I wasn’t ready to lose Cain, to lose the man I was just starting to truly, get to know. The man that had stolen a piece of my soul and my heart. I looked up at her. “Is he suffering? Is there a way to save him?” I asked her, desperation in my tone. Rose looked away from me. “I can’t give you an answer as to whether or not if the Alpha is suffering, as we don’t know.” She met my gaze and inhaled deeply before continuing. “There are tales of a cure, but there is no actual proof that it really exists or if it would even work.” She said wistfully. I stood to my feet and faced her. “What cure? Rose, if there is a chance, even the slightest possibility, I am taking it. I will do whatever it takes to try and save his life.” I told her, meaning every single word. She took a step back and pinched the bridge of her nose, reluctance etching her featu

#Chapter70We ran towards the woods, careful to watch our surroundings for anyone that would stop us. Finally, we reached the tree line and stepped into the dense brush, blending ourselves with the forest. We went further in and continued running for a few minutes before stopping. Gunnar and I had closed enough distance between us and the pack house that it was safe to stop now, but only for a moment.Kneeling on the ground, I opened the bag Rose gave us and started pulling the contents out. First, I pulled out an old map showing directions to the forest and the willow tree. Then, I dug into the bag again, pulling out salt, a lighter, a flashlight, a pair of gloves, a compass and a silver knife. Although the knife was dangerous to us, it was also a threat to other supernatural creatures, but I was glad Rose had packed some gloves. Gunnar knelt beside me, and we both started to go over the map, memorizing key points. “According to the map, it doesn’t seem like it's too far of a jour
