Their Target

Ash shielded me from the wolves, pushing me back into the corridor. "Baltazar, walk away and take your wolves with you before I take it as an act of treason," Ash hissed, his nails turning into sharp blades."Ashtar, I am here because I'm loyal," the old wolf claimed, lowering his head."Loyal to who?!" Ash growled."To your family!" Baltazar roared but then bowed and took a deep breath. "Give her to us; that's all we want. You know that it has to be done, and either we do it or the King's men will. At least we can grant her a seemingly painless death."I clamped my hand over my mouth. The fear, the anger, the confusion—all those emotions violently rose inside me, and I had to restrain them before they burst out in a scream that was already building in my throat.Ash glanced at me over his shoulder and quickly returned his gaze to Baltazar. "She is NOT a threat!" He stood on the threshold, blocking the way into the house as he spread his arms, armed with sharp claws. There was a momen

Escape

"Nala! Nala, can you hear me?!" The familiar voice was breaking through the blur of distorted sounds. A light slap on my cheek brought back the feeling of heaviness in my body. Other senses returned at once, hitting me with an overwhelming dose of pain. The ache came from everywhere, as if I had managed to strain every muscle in my body and put all my nerves on fire. A ragged exhale left me, and I forced myself to open my eyes, processing my position and surroundings. My legs were lying on the ground, and I couldn't move them. My upper body hung limply, supported by Ash's arms as he knelt next to me. His chest rattled with shallow breaths while his filled-with-concern eyes studied me. His fingers squeezed my arms as if he were urging my reaction."What… happened?" I rasped."You killed them, Nala," he said softly before glancing around. I followed his line of sight and saw burned, still-smoking bodies lying on the ground wherever I looked. Ash and I were the only ones alive. I gasped,

The Only Way

After some time, I could finally walk without Ash's help. I was regenerating faster than before, although I was still a little lightheaded and walked rather wobbly on my feet. Ash constantly asked me how I felt, even though it was his condition that I was more worried about. Some of his wounds were still bleeding, and that was one of the things that made me anxious. What if Baltazar knew about the tunnels? What if we encountered his warriors again? If that happened, I would have to rely on Ash's strength, but how could I do that if he wasn't even properly healing?! I had yet to fully understand and control my inner power, and my fighting skills hardly allowed me to fight against the weaker wolves. My energy could be enough for a single blast that could take down several wolves, but then what? I tried to stay positive, hoping that Calvel and others would come to our aid, but I couldn't stop the panic from rising. "Why are your wounds not healing?" I asked softly. Ash sighed and gave

Heartache

I drifted into nothingness. I didn't know how long I was lying on the ground, unconscious. The screech of metal grinding against the stone was the first sound to pull me toward the land of the living. It made my body jerk, or so I thought because I was certain I couldn't move on my own. The feel of a pair of strong arms wrapping around me and lifting me came a moment later. I sensed the unique scent of the summer storm heavily mixed with the coppery smell of blood."Thank you for your gift, angel mine." Ash's voice vibrated through my skin. Then his lips touched my forehead, and for the first time, I felt that my skin was colder than his.I couldn't move. I couldn't even open my eyes. I couldn't utter a word. All I could do was hear and feel... and everything I felt was overwhelming.Ash's grip on my body tightened as he started walking, carrying me. I didn't see what was happening. I merely felt the movement, my body shifting at the pace of energetic steps."Fucking hell!" I heard Ca

Resolution

A few servants saw me as I walked back to my chamber, but they simply passed me by. I felt as if something had changed. Except for a few, no one here treated me with the utmost respect, but they had never openly shown their hostility either. Now I saw their lips curve downward as they sent me glances filled with disdain and sometimes... pity. That only helped my anxieties grow stronger.I wondered if any of those servants were going to inform Ash about my midnight stroll. I was almost certain that someone would. I hoped that it would make him come to my room and ask about it. I expected him to come as soon as I returned to my chamber, but that didn't happen…I started finding it frighteningly disturbing. No one checked up on me. Neither Ash, Amanda, nor Calvel came to see if I was still alive as if it no longer mattered. Not even Hunter stayed around my room for my safety; no guards did. Thinking about it caused another crack in my aching heart because it only made everything I heard

Estelle Island

Amanda wasn't sure if there was any place for us to sleep on the island. Rumors had it there was a cottage house somewhere in the middle of a forest, but since no one aside from Ash visited this place, and he—conveniently—was out of reach, we had no chance to confirm it. The next morning, I filled my bag with sweats, jeans, and sneakers, preparing for at least a week of camping in tents.I hated camping. I had been sleeping in a tent twice my entire life, both on school trips, and I remembered both times as a dreadful experience. I truly hoped we would find this damn house to be real.As I sat inside the car, I was flooded with a new wave of uncertainty. What was I even doing? I was too heartbroken, confused, and angry to properly think this through. I was so focused on the fact that someone had given me some kind of answer that I didn't—not even once—question it. A stranger who covered his face in a deep hood told me to go and seek knowledge on an island, and I blindly trusted him th

Talking to the Ghost

I exhaled slowly, staring at the person, or rather, a ghost, in front of me. A few months ago, I would have screamed my lungs out if a spirit—or whatever supernatural being Estelle was—had appeared in front of me. Now, I simply stood warily, looking at the seemingly solid shape of her body, and wondered if she was a threat to me…According to Silas, Estelle was an angry spirit, and since I was currently in a form of a relationship with the one who was the reason she killed herself, I knew that her hatred could be easily aimed at me."What do you want from me, Estelle?" I strained through my teeth. Her dark grin widened. "Do you think I want to harm you, Nala? All this time, I've only been trying to help you. I wanted you to see the truth, even if you may not like it."My brows rose. "All this time?" I repeated her words with rising curiosity."From the moment you found my picture," she explained, and chills ran down my spine. "Don't be so surprised. I'm a witch. When I was alive, I wa

Looking for Answers

I spent the entire day arguing with Amanda. She demanded answers, and I was forced to tell her the truth—partially. I told her that I talked with Estelle and that she was using my energy to manifest herself. I skipped the entire topic of our conversation, and I was glad that Amanda focused on the fact that our conversation happened and that it exhausted my body."Absolutely not!" she exclaimed when I told her that I wanted to spend a few more days on the island. "That Estelle could have killed you! There's no way I'm letting you stay in the only place where she can feed on your energy!"My lips stretched into a thin line. I knew the risk, but I couldn't leave this place without finding out the truth about what I was or without even trying. The problem was, telling Amanda that I wanted to chase after all-knowing ancient spirits living on this island might not have sounded like a convincing reason to stay. Fortunately, I decided to tell her that because the island was a power spot, I ha

Awakening

I didn't know how I got out of that cave, but suddenly I was in the middle of the forest. A single high-pitched tone rang in my ears. My legs were folding under me. Everything within me resonated. I felt my anger and sadness like physical pain, flooding my bones and muscles. I thought that I was prepared to hear the truth in all its ugliness, but I wasn't.God, I might have been in love with Ash already. I couldn't even think of what would have happened if I had confessed to him. Would he thank me for giving him my heart before taking my life? A dumb, naïve part of me still held to the tiny bit of a chance that killing me was never a part of Ash's plan, that I was never just a tool for him, that I should confront him before deciding that everything he did and said was nothing but a lie. But then wouldn't only a fool do that? Would a prey ask the predator if he was going to kill it?Whatever was happening inside me, it was getting stronger. My chest heaved and fell rapidly. I greedily

The New Strength

Amanda pushed me away. "Run, Nala!" she growled.I stared at the snarling wolf in front of us and his blazing-red eyes. "I'm not leaving you!" I shouted."I can handle him!" Amanda insisted, but Landon only laughed."Oh, will you now?" He looked at Amanda wide-eyed and smirked. "I don't need to shift to tear you apart, and you know that. Stop playing a hero. The outcome of this fight is already known."As soon as he said it, two more wolves jumped from the boat. Their claws were already out, and their teeth prepared to tear flesh. Landon ripped off his tank top and stood in a fighting stance. I gulped. I didn't know if Amanda was strong enough to fight them. I had never seen her fight. But even if she could handle Landon, what about the two others?Fuck.Amanda didn't wait for Landon's strike. She lunged first, swiping her claws in a few swift moves across his neck and chest. The cuts reached deep, parting the blood-soaked folds of skin and muscles. That made me think Amanda had a cha
