Chapter forty one

Vanessa’s P.O.VSummer arrived back at my apartment an hour before our girls’ night began and thoroughly attacked me with makeup brushes and tight-fitting outfits. After telling Summer, “I am not going out in public in that,” multiple times, and trying on many scandalous outfits, we finally settled on a simple black slip dress and strappy heels. Summer had worked my blonde hair into a French twist with accented pieces hanging down around my face. The makeup was a bit more than I usually applied myself, but I had to admit, I felt stunning. Summer had chosen a far more exciting outfit which included a tiny strapless blue dress with cutouts on the side and matching blue stilettos. A knock on the door signaled it was eight. “That must be Arie and Leah!” Summer squealed. She opened the door to find not just Arie and Leah, but Alpha Marcus and Darren as well. Summer glared at the men. “No. No boys allowed.” Alpha Marcus glared back at her. “With everything that’s going on, I’m a

Vanessa P.O.VI woke from a dreamless sleep, alone. The memory of the girl from last night made my stomach turn. I showered, trying to wash off the feelings of sadness, and guilt. I changed into my training clothes, which actually fit thanks to Summer, and sat on the couch until there was a knock at the door. I opened it, finding Leah. “Darren is working closely with Alpha Marcus,” Leah explained. I felt a stab of disappointment knowing Marcus might not be around today. I followed Leah in silence as we made our way through the complex. When I entered the training room, i was surprised to see Arie and Summer already there. Summer grinned. “Girls’ training date!” “What are you doing here?” I wondered. “Aren’t we supposed to be training?” Summer scoffed. “Listen, honey, I’m the daughter of an Alpha and the sister of an Alpha. I have been well-trained.” Leah rolled her eyes. “Today we will be focusing on hand-to-hand combat techniques. In the event you are attacked and unable to use

Vanessa’s P.O.V “Relax, Vanessa . I’ll answer all your questions, but just one at a time.” Nick said with his soothing and relaxing voice. “And remember, we’re all on the same side now. You made sure of it or have you forgotten.” He continued. How could I forget that I had negotiated a peace treaty between Alpha Marcus and Alpha Ace and their packs . “To be honest, am a bit disappointed, I thought you’d be happier to see me . We shared some good moments back then.” Nick said as he glared into my eyes. “I won’t lie. Am glad that you are here but it is your motive that makes me doubt your presence.” I answered. “You know I’d never do anything that may bring you harm, I just wanted to get closer to you and this was the only way.” He admitted and I could tell he was being genuine. Nick was the only genuine friend I had made over the years and something about him always drew me to him but there was always an obstacle ahead of us. Maybe something about the forbidden fruit made me crave mor

Chapter forty four

Vanessa’s P.O.VLeah’s wolf was long and lean, nearly twice the size of a normal wolf. It walked low to the ground and was covered in solid black fur that rose up high along its back. Intimidating as the animal was, it wasn’t the size or shape of her wolf that had stopped him, it was the eyes. The way her black eyes glowed among her dark fur was unimaginably horrifying. Looking into those deep black orbs felt like looking into the face of death. It was disturbing and dark and soulless. Even I felt a chill rip through my chest as the beast approached. Suddenly my world began to spin. I had felt something similar before, back when i was taken against my will. I gasped in recognition. He was trying to teleport us out. To where? I didn’t want to find out. “Leah!” she cried. And by the time the word had left her lips, the wolf was already there, sailing through the air. I could feel the heat as the wolf dove above my left shoulder and straight into the face of my captor. The impact k

Vanessa’s P.O.V A tightness formed in my stomach, realizing I had been the one who killed him. “Though they have never attempted to breach the complex before, they’re clearly becoming desperate now. We need a way to secure our borders. I’ve spoken with Aria who believes she knows someone who can help. Aria.” He looked over at the beautiful blonde.“As lycans,” Aria began, “you all have incredible speed and strength. There is no question of how you can handle everyday threats. The Collectors have put us in an interesting position by pitting us against a magic we do not possess. It’s time we started to gathersome magic on our side as well.” Aria’s gaze fell onto me. “While Vanessa is extremely powerful, she is still a new Celestial and cannot be expected to defend us all single-handedly. I will be contacting the local covens in hopes of recruiting new Chosen to our cause. In particular, we are seeking someone who can draw wards to defend our building. This would keep the Collectors fr

By the time Vanessa crawled into bed, she was exhausted. Nick remained in an armchair in the corner of the room, insisting he needed very little sleep as a lycan. Vanessa was too tired to fight him, and sleep soon overtook her. She was running through the cave, screams echoing around her. She saw swirling white eyes in the dark, a voice overhead. “If she doesn’t change soon, she’s of no use to us.” Another scream rang through the air. Ice crawled up Vanessa’s arms, leaving behind bubbled flesh. Something glowed in the distance. A cold breath whispered in her ear, “Soon you’ll belong to me.” Vanessa shot awake, gasping for breath. Nick was on her in seconds. He planted his hands on either side of her shoulders. “It was just a dream,” he soothed. Tears streamed down Vanessa’s cheeks. They sparkled then froze in place. “They’re coming for me,” she sobbed. “I could feel it. They’re trying to get to me. He said it, he said…” Nick pulled her to his chest. She leaned into him, and cried.

Vanessa was returned to her apartment by Leah. Nick apparently had to take care of some things for the Alpha. A few minutes later, she heard a knock at the door. Her heart beat wildly as she pulled it open. Instead of Nick, a squealing Aria came running inside. “What an exciting day!” She grabbed Vanessa by the hands and walked her over to the couch. “So tell me about this Traveler. He’s a gypsy right? Is he cute? Can he teleport anywhere? Maybe he’ll teleport me out of here so I can finally get some…” Aria was speaking so quickly, Vanessa didn’t even have time to respond. “Speaking of which.” Aria’s eyes glittered, “So you and Nick, huh?” She stared at Vanessa eagerly. “Please, I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Aria tilted her head, those deep blue eyes burning straight into Vanessa’s guilty soul. “Okay, fine!” Vanessa relented. “Some stuff happened.” “Eeep!” Aria squealed. “I need to know everything, all the juicy details!” There was another knock at the door. “But first…

Chapter Fourty eight

Vanessa awoke the next morning with a terrible headache. She was still dressed in yesterday’s clothes. Flashbacks of takeout and sake bombs came flooding back. I’m going to kill Aria , she thought as she staggered toward the kitchen. Water was the only thing on her mind right now. Using her powers, Vanessa created a small, packed handful of ice. Holding it to her throbbing head, she crawled out of the bedroom. “Good morning, drunkface!” chirped a cheerful, and seemingly un-hungover Aria. “Geez!” Vanessa startled, her heart beating a million miles a second. Adrenaline jumpstarted Vanessa’s body and mind. “What are you doing here?” Aria only smiled one of those gorgeous pearly-teeth smiles. “I stayed the night, silly! You slept in, so I went and got us donuts!” Vanessa sighed and let out a grumbled string of curses while also including the words Aria, sake, and no more girls’ nights. Aria only laughed. “It’s so easy to forget you’re not a lycan! My metabolism basically burns off the a

It was then that Vanessa noticed the two women next to Laurie. One was an elderly woman, her skin wrinkled and drawn. Long grey hair trailed down her back. A variety of glittering rings covered her arthritic fingers. Though the body had aged, her bright mossy eyes gleamed with vitality. Next to her was a younger woman, probably near Vanessa’s age. She had soft-looking red hair that fell past her shoulders, and striking turquoise eyes. The fiery-red hair and brilliant eyes shone brightly against her pale, freckled skin. She was one of the most unique-looking people Vanessa had ever seen. “Please give a warm welcome to Matlena and Brona. They have come to help us strengthen the complex and protect those within it.” The older woman’s gaze moved to Vanessa. She studied her carefully. Vanessa did not feel the need to look away. A maternal energy radiated from the woman they called Matlena. She spoke with strength behind her aging face. “We are glad to be here and happy to help in this ma

That wasn’t what made Vanessa’s jaw drop. The room was made entirely of glass. It extended beyond the building walls and onto a gorgeous glass overhang. Vanessa walked to the edge of the glittering balcony and looked up. Encased completely in its transparent material, she could see an expanse of soft blues and fluffy white clouds. It was almost like being outside as she stared up at the sunny Georgia sky. “What is this place?” Vanessa asked with wonder. “It was Marcus’s mother’s. She loved all things green.” There was a sadness in Nick’s voice. They took a seat on a small stone bench as they began to eat their sandwiches and fruit. “What was she like?” Vanessa asked between bites. “Marcus’s mother, I mean.” Nick smiled. “She was beautiful and kind. There was a gentleness to her nature, and at the same time a deep strength. She was generous, and just, but she also didn’t take any shit from the Alpha or anyone else.” “Hmm sounds a lot like Aria, minus the foul mouth and no filter.”
