To the master

Chapter 11Nancy was rudely awakened when the good woman burst into the room that morning. "Wake up! Wake up, child, before she returns and finds you here"Just then, the front door opened again and Anna burst into the room too, Nancy raised her head and saw that Victory was no longer beside her. Then she looked at the stern, hard faced woman standing by the bed and shot her a look of contempt. She wondered what the woman would do if she attacked her. She would probably run off screaming to the entire village that the cursed black magician had tried to kill her and she had narrowly escaped, she looked around and saw Mirabel staring curiously at her too, Nancy was yet to learn whether or not she had need to be wary of the child, was she like her mother or her aunt? She would never know."Be quick, child, go and dress yourself," The good woman continued, handing Nancy a rough woolen shift. "This place is not safe for you, the men from yesterday are everywhere now. They seem very convin

Caught in questions

Chapter 12Nancy was lifted roughly into the canoe by one of the men, another one was sent out by the older man to inform the others that the Lady had been captured so they should return immediately. The old man and the younger fellow with him did not wait for the other men to join them, the younger man pushed the canoe into the river with Nancy and the old man in it and jumped into it to paddle away. The chill morning breeze played with Nancy's features, she reached out and let her hair loose, it flew in the breeze and must have brushed the younger man's face because he turned his head to her and gave her a warning look, Nancy paid him no mind and just stared into the water ahead."What is that with you and why do you have it?" The younger man who was glaring at her asked Nancy in a contemptuous tone. Nancy said nothing and just continued looking at the water, the man reached out and opened the sac containing Victory to reveal its head. Sensing the rough handling and the tension, w

A fire before the flowers

Chapter 13It was not just the gate, the fence of this place spread wide across the lands around it, Nancy looked in awe as they approached the mighty spread before her. She peaked around to be sure she memorized the landscapes, but how could one master all of these wonderful spreads of property? And who could own such a house in a stretch? Maybe it was another community, for whatever lay behind these walls had to be another city, it was too big to be just one house. As they approached the mighty gate, she sighted men outside there, with most of them with swords and others with crossed bows and arrows, Nancy gasped. Were they preparing for a war? She would soon find out.Soon, the horses halted in front of the massive gate, even taller now that they were near, the armed men approached Nancy and her company, they inspected the horses and came back in front of the other men. "You had no trouble bringing the lady then?" One man asked Salem after inspecting and realizing they were all a

An early dinner

Chapter 14Nancy was allowed to sleep the whole afternoon away, she was surprised when she woke up to find Rosey still in the room. She blinked a few times before she could finally come to terms with her surroundings and in alarm, she immediately reached out to find Victory, who had been waiting patiently for her to wake. Victory ran to her and sniffed her immediately she saw her eyes open, Nancy smiled and rubbed the animal's fur teasingly. "You waited up for Mama, ehh" She said playfully, the animal meowed in response. "I greet you, My Lady" Rosey greeted from where she stood at the far end of the bed.Nancy grunted, for a split second she had imagined she was dreaming this whole castle and estate up. How her life had switched from a normal African girl to a rich English Lord's bride was still a mystery to her, it was something to marvel at"I suppose you have been waiting for me to wake up, then?""I was instructed to, My lady. You had nothing to eat before sleeping" The maid rep

No escaping

Chapter 15"You have been sitting there for hours now, it's about time we get back with the rest of the men." Derek ignored his friend and threw another pebble into the lake. He had been doing that for hours but even his mind was absent. His thoughts were in disarray, he could swear he was lost, losing his mind and worst would happen if nothing was done to save him… from whatever was awaiting him at home."Come on man, you don't plan on ignoring me again, do you?" Derek scoffed, "Can't you tell when a man needs to be left alone?" "How can a girl like me know that, ehh?" Harvey replied sarcastically. Derek eyed his friend, "This is not time for your dry jokes, you should just go away" Harvey ignored him and took a seat beside him on the spot. He took one pebble and threw it into the lake as well. They both watched the bubble that formed as the pebble sank in, Derek threw the next, a fish leapt out of the water and dived back into the water. "So, how long do you intend to run away

A master cannot marry a slave...

Chapter 16When neither Rosey nor any of the family were around to tell her no, Nancy spent the day lazily in the house, getting to know the servants. She had managed to put Victory to a short nap, she knew this because the cat rarely took naps since they arrived here and it's been well over two weeks already. Nancy kissed the cat's head hastily and left the room after she dressed, stealthily opening the door to avoid any noise that might draw the cat's attention, Victory had gotten so attached and grown fond of this place. Probably because it was big enough for it to roam about with no fear of falling or jumping into the ocean, Nancy chuckled at the thought. She wondered how the cat would feel when Master Derek finally returns and they have to leave. If she thought the weather back home was nice then this one was far better. Nancy was almost tempted to take one of the horses and go out to explore the rest of this city, but she knew that will be a stupid one on her part, that is if one

Unease in Expectation

Chapter 17Reading was not helping, Nancy dropped the sixth book on the table with a bang. She took a sip from the fresh juice Mitchelle had brought in earlier and stood up to pace the length of the room. That too was not helping to calm her nerves, her thoughts were in a mess. She could not help the unease she felt and the panic that threatened to blind her senses, Derek Lincoln had sent words to his father earlier to inform them of their homecoming. The hustling and bustling in the house had not ceased ever since the messenger arrived at the estate. For Nancy, his homecoming would either be the beginning of her end or the end to a means, it might put an end to all these or it would seal her fate forever. His father did not waste time before informing Nancy to prepare for a wedding, one which will be held the day after Derek's return. This was so they can carry on with the celebration of their return and also celebrate the wedding feast.Having the wedding soon would mean her suppos

A Return Surprise

Chapter 18Derek stared into the fields absent mindedly as the horses approached the gates of the Lincoln estate. His men wished to cheer and make merry to announce their arrival as they crossed into the Lincoln territory but Derek stopped them. Though the midnight breeze blew over the leaves on the horizon, it was still the middle of the night, and nearly everyone would be sleeping soundly. Derek knew there would be plenty of time to celebrate tomorrow, for their victory and the greetings of old friends and family. But for now Derek only wanted to be home, to sleep through the remainder of the night in his own bed.The men would stay the night at the Lincoln's estate house. In the morning they would return to their homes, collect their families and return to the estate for a gala welcome celebration. They were all as exhausted as he was because they had fought a storm that ended only hours earlier. Two men were elected to stay with the horses since the stable boy had gone to bed alrea

You do not own me

Chapter 19"Well?" Derek asked grimly.Nancy said nothing, she just stood there staring blankly at the man in front of her. Was this some kind of joke or a dream perhaps? It had to be. How can this man be as beautiful as sin and what was she supposed to do, hate him? "God damn it!" Nancy said in frustration, a hand rubbing her forehead to soothe the headache that was already threatening to burst her brain."Is there no end to your foul language, Coffee?" She heard Derek ask in disgust."Did you say coffee?" Nancy asked instead, she heard him say it the first time, thought it was a mistake and now he was saying it again. "And what if I did?" He retorted.Nancy turned around like she was searching for something, "I don't see any coffee around here""Oh, but you look like one. I mean you have the exact same color like coffee." She saw him relax as he folded his hands across his chest. Her temper was rising terribly by the minute, how in hell was she even supposed to put up with this ma

Better off for nothing

Chapter 20Unlike many men, spending the night with his soon to be bride was not something Derek looked forward to or even enjoyed. Last night had been nothing short of hell for him, he was too pissed to even partake in any of the parties that were going on around the house. His men were jubilating and joining in on the celebrations, many even stopped by to congratulate him on his betrothal and soon to hold marriage.Anger and frustration. That was the only feelings that surged through his body as he listened to the chattering going on and on about him and his ebony bride. Involuntarily, Derek's mind wandered back to Nancy, she had come into his life uninvited and occupied everything; his life and his thoughts. Somehow, Derek found that he could not keep his thoughts straight without thinking about the woman, the beginning of his sorrows. She was nothing like he had seen before, feisty and fiery as hell herself. With her foul temper and sharp mouth, she was going to drive him crazy i
