Chapter 11: Secret Agent Vibes

Jamie did not manage to make it down to dinner beyond grabbing a bread roll and a banana, but the quick and easy lie of her ribs bothering her and going to sleep it off kept everyone at bay, even Valerie. It seemed no one was the wiser to her snooping, not even Andy. A blessing, truly, but a curse to her dreams since she couldn't go in guns blazing and hold the man up by the collar of his shirt and shake him till he confessed. She might've been just a bit murderous. Little Daniella didn't know why Jamie gave her candy, but the girl very happily accepted it. You paid back the little pups who helped you, even if they didn't know it. Jamie learned that from a young age, especially with their pack's beta Gabriel giving her sweets then releasing her onto the more misbehaving children in the sparring rings. The amount of people she knowingly or unknowingly sold out in her childhood was rather high, but she learned from it. Children knew things and could get away with things too. Even

Chapter 12: Alpha Retirement Plan

"So, I've been meaning to ask…" "Ask what?" asked Valerie, looking up from the book she was reading while in their cabin. Jamie had gotten rather lucky that the other very rarely stayed inside the cabin, preferring to go on long walks or lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. It was storming outside though, meaning it was the perfect opportunity for Jamie to ask what no doubt were sensitive questions as she tried to get dirt on Andy without making it look like she was targeting him. "About how old you are. You said you were with the pack for about 4 years so…22, like Logan, right?" "Ah…not quite," laughed Valerie nervously before closing her book and setting it aside. Aw crap. Jamie definitely put her foot in her mouth and tripped onto something way more than 'something sensitive'. It was personal. "I'm 24, my–uh, parents, well my mother, you see, was from outside the White Oak Territory. Traditions can be a bit different when that happens and one of them was that shifting c

Chapter 13: Helping You to Help Myself

All in all, four weeks to heal a broken collarbone was not bad. Shifters always did heal a bit faster than regular humans. While she was still a bit tender, and too many hits could re-break it, Jamie was feeling rather good. She had to get the bone rechecked by Andy and had to bite her tongue so she didn't bite his prodding fingers off instead, but she'd been cleared to remove her sling and was allowed to partake in light exercise. Valerie had even believed her when she said that she no longer needed the pills to deal with the pain–not like she was using them in the first place but still. It was nice to no longer have to carry on that ruse. Gathering dirt on Andy had been less successful than her healing bones though. The man was smart, or at least had a lot of practice on avoiding detection, discovery, and skirting the Territory Laws. Naturally, medics had an allowance for crossing the borders to get to patients. However, Andy seemed to take advantage of this for even when he wa

Chapter 14: Alpha Pack Rat

"Now I know why you didn't let me see inside last time. This place is a wreck." Jamie couldn't help but stare at the chaos inside Logan's office. She wasn't sure whether to be impressed or disappointed with his organization skills. There was paper everywhere, on the desk, the bookshelves, stacked on the floor. The closet was slipping out into the room, miscellaneous things from shoes and suits to a beachball of all things. It bespoke of a man who knew where everything down to the last rubber band was. Or he was so done with everything that the pigpen he worked in was the least of his worries. "Hey! Well…you're not wrong, but I've managed to keep things running for four years so you gotta give me some credit." "Oh, trust me, I am. Credit doesn't mean I'm impressed." Jamie snickered at his dramatic, wounded expression before stretching out her arms. It looked like she would be getting a workout today. "Anything I'm not supposed to see?" She had to ask at the very least even if she

Chapter 15: I Spy a Spy

3:00 AM was a terrible time no matter the day, and Jamie wanted nothing more than to stay in bed, but of course she had to go all secret agent on the matter with Andy. Of course, she had to sneak into Logan's office in the dead of night. She couldn't be a normal person and break in at lunch time, no, she had to be 'dramatic'.In all truth though, night was the only time she could sneak in and sneak out relatively easily without being caught or put under suspicion. Her sleep would suffer, but it could take a hit or two for her peace of mind. Sneaking into the main house was…easy. Almost painfully so. If it was a regularly sized pack there'd be more patrols, more guards, someone on the night shift. Instead, there was a closed connection CCTV camera set up around the borders and a mix of locks and deadbolts to most of the thick wooden doors. You'd have to put some force into it to break them down, but by then everyone in the pack would've heard you. It was a good thing Jamie wasn't b

Chapter 16: Call Me Out On It

Logan stared at her, locking them in a stalemate. He had caught her red handed, holding the picture frame, sitting in the office chair. It was hard to misconstrue what she was doing. She broke into his office, was holding a no doubt treasured photo, and did who knows what when he wasn't there. Things weren't looking too good for her. It would end before it even began if he threw her from the pack now. "Do you think—" Jamie spoke up, ignoring the rage in his expression and doing the only thing she could to salvage this situation. Allow herself to be weak. "That they would want to hear from me?" The fight bled from him, and she allowed herself to tear her eyes away from him, looking at the landline phone, sitting so innocently on the desk. "Do you think they care?" she whispered out her fear. The one she'd been trying to ignore since coming here. Jamie wanted to believe they loved her, that they did this because they cared but they hadn't said anything, just sent her away without

Chapter 17: Believing in Love

There was a loud thump from the other end of the phone, and Jamie could hear her mother asking what happened before there was another thump, her dad letting out a woosh of air and Jamie couldn't help but laugh, not knowing what else to do. Her mother just tackled her father to get closer to the phone. "Jamie?! Oh Jamie, sweetheart, we've been so worried!" "Hi Mama," she choked out, closing her eyes and trying not to cry."Are you okay? Have they been treating you well? Do I need to start something?" demanded her father and a sob left her throat because her dad was willing to start a fight with another pack for her. "No–no, daddy, I'm alright. The Northeastern pack's been good to me. I miss home though. I miss the path I'd take a morning run on. I miss sparring with the pack, messing around with Sarah, I miss you…why didn't you tell me I was going? I could've understood." "If we told you, we wouldn't have been able to let you go." Jamie could tell her mother was crying, her voice w

Chapter 18: Rationalizations in the Night

Her father couldn't find the origins of the members of the Northeastern pack. Jamie knew it was a longshot, but she'd been hopeful. Without their names and without knowing where they were from it'd be hard for him to ask, especially when they were being so careful with this.Faith Anderson, the Southern pack's medic, had some documents but couldn't even send hers over yet. There were hoops she had to jump through to do it since Andy was supposed to be the only one who had access now. To get the medical files from a pack that wasn't theirs though? She was gonna have to jump through a lot more than hoops. Jamie was already lucky her parents were on her side and that Faith also believed in her to even do something like this that went against all pack standards. It was a waiting game now, so why did Jamie feel like there was a time limit?Logan hadn't been upset with her breaking in, even allowing her to continue to help with the paperwork. In truth, Jamie had to punish herself, takin

Chapter 19: Like...Oh No

"So, what did you want to be when you grew up?" asked Jamie curiously. She was sitting in Logan's office on the floor, sorting through one of the last piles of paperwork. Two weeks of work and here they were. It was almost decent. It was up to Logan to sort through the coats though and how the closet was bulging, and some sort of carnival stuffed snake was sticking halfway out, she didn't think that was going to happen. "Huh? Oh, well…did you know what you wanted to be?" "The alpha." Logan made a small noise, giving her a look, and Jamie laughed. "No, but in all seriousness, it was more like being the alpha was a means to an end to get to where I really wanted to be. I'm sure you've heard people call me wild." "Don't forget feral," he grinned roguishly, making her roll her eyes. "That too, but I know what I'm about. I don't like being controlled. Alphas are the last people you'd even think about trying to control, and when someone takes over for you? You're just an elder and do

Chapter 20: Area of Affect and Affection

Jamie chose to ignore her sudden realization about her feelings for Logan. She did not have time for that when she was trying to expose and convict his best friend. Yeah, that wasn't a good starting point for a relationship. More like a situationship. The fallout of that would be even worse if they were dating. Logan was a good guy. He was funny and strong and pretty handsome…AHHHHHH!'Heart, you've betrayed me!' Jamie inwardly screamed, slamming her face back into her pillow—thanking God Valerie was still asleep. She didn't need to have that conversation. Help for her love life was not really the help she needed right now. Her heart got her into this in the first place though. Not only did she feel the need to take down Andy for hurting them all, now she was crushing on the guy who'd defend him, who also happened to be the pack alpha. "Stupid emotions," muttered Jamie before looking at the clock and now cursing God. 2:07 AM was not a decent time for all that it was considered 'th
