38. ARIEL —"You met Asher?"

I stared at Roseline in surprise. "You met Asher?" I asked. I had been hesitant to meet with Asher because I did not know what to tell him. Right now, he must be fuming mad. "I did. And he wants to see you." She replied. I was ruffling through my closet for a dress to wear but when she said that, I stopped. She rose from her place on my bed and stood behind me. "I know it's risky to be meeting him at a time like this but you have to. He's going crazy without you." I did not say anything. If only she knew how much I wanted to run to Asher right now but I was weighing the pros and cons. "I know you're scared you'll be caught but don't worry, you won't be meeting him inside the palace." She said. I turned to look at her in surprise. I could bet my eyes were already glistening with mischief. "So?" I asked. "He's going to wait for you in the woods." I contemplated this for a while and seeing no harm in it, I nodded. "I'll meet him but I have a small problem." "What is it?

39. XAVIER — "we need to find her!"

I pulled the door open and let Juliet in. "Seems like you weren't expecting me." She said taking her seat on the edge of my bed. I wasn't. Ariel was supposed to meet me two hours ago and even though she was the type that usually ran late, this was too much, even for her. Juliet stretched out her hand towards me and in her open palm, I saw a Jade hairpin. It was significant of royalty but I knew it did not belong to Juliet. She hated things like that. "Why are you showing that to me?" "It belongs to princess Ariel." I arched an eyebrow at her and waited for her to continue speaking. "I've seen her wear this a few times." "What has that got to do with me?" If this was Juliet's idea of getting the princess and me to be closer, then she needed to think again. "I think she dropped it while she snuck out of the palace." I was now on high alert. Why did she think that now was a good time to sneak out of the palace especially when her mother had people watching her like a

40. ROSELINE — " we both know Xavier will find her"

I inhaled and then exhaled roughly. This was not the plan. This was not the goddamn plan. Xavier was not supposed to interfere. The princess was supposed to be missing all night. She was supposed to return to the palace all by herself, battered and bruised. Only then would the king and queen believe that the northerners had indeed been behind the abduction. What good would it do for Xavier to rescue her now? I ran a finger through my hair in anger and threw my shoe at my mirror. "My princess, the Queen sends for you." I heard my maid cry from outside in her too-loud voice. Of course, the Queen was sending for me. After all, I was Ariel's lackey. I forced a smile back on my face and retrieved my shoe from where it had landed in front of my vanity. I couldn't be caught looking happy but a guilty look would do me no good either. I tucked hair behind my ear and pulled my door open. My maid had a mourning look on her face. "What is the issue?" I snapped. "Princess Ariel. I hop

41. ARIEL— "something was fishy"

I stared at Xavier's guard in shock. I dashed out of the room with Rosy following close behind. How could he just die like that when we were yet to get anything out of him? Something was fishy. "Ariel, you have to calm down. You're still sick." Rosy called from behind me but I did not look back. If only I could turn back the hand of time and interrogate him myself before he had the chance to commit suicide. The prison was even darker than the rest of the palace. When I got there, Xavier and some other of the palace guards were gathered around the body of the dead kidnapper. I pushed through them until I was standing directly in front of the body. "What happened to him exactly?" I asked breathing heavily. Xavier turned to look at me for the first time. He looked surprised to see me there. "You should not be here." He said and started to lead me away but I brushed his hand off violently and stood my ground. Did he expect me to rest in my room while something of this magnitud

42. ROSELINE — "what are you doing? "

I stared at the small knife in my hand. I honestly did not want to go through the hassle of getting blood on my hands but this was becoming unavoidable. But first, there was so much to do. I tucked the knife into the pocket of my jacket and zipped it shut. Stealthily, I made my way to Asher's room. As I expected, he was not in. He was probably somewhere, feeding Ariel with lies, and knowing my cousin, she was most likely eating it all up with an unrivaled hunger. I walked straight to his dressing table and opened the drawers underneath. There was nothing much to see in the first drawer; A few combs, a pack of wipes, perfume bottles, a bracelet, a pocket knife, and a wristwatch. There were no pills anywhere. I looked through the second drawer. It held a brown journal and a small camera which surprised me because I did not think he was someone who had an interest in such things as photography. The last drawer was locked and try as I might, it refused to open. I looked around f

43. XAVIER — "He's dead"

I paused and listened. My ears had picked up on a dull thud somewhere in the distance. "Did you hear that, Sean?" I asked advancing towards the wall. "What?" He asked but his eyes were focused somewhere else. "That sound. I think something fell on the other side." I said looking up at the wall. I was already mentally preparing myself to climb to the other side when Sean gave a loud gasp. I turned to look at him and he was stealthily turning the corner, his eyes narrowed. "What is it?" I whispered. If Sean was acting this way, then it meant that something was up. He was not an alarmist usually. "It's suspicious." He said and continued to make his way round the corner to the entrance. I followed behind him on my tiptoes, careful not to make a sound. He suddenly turned the corner and I did the same. Right in front of us were the two guards, lying on the ground unconscious. I rushed to them and took their pulse while Sean looked around us for signs of movement. "They

44. ARIEL — "The wedding was moved. Again?!"

I grabbed my chest to contain the pain I felt congregating there. I was already going crazy as it was and now what? The wedding was being moved again? "We'll be leaving here in four days." My father said but I was hardly listening. I was already finding it so difficult to process the events of the past twenty-four hours and here my parents were setting off another bomb on my head. When did it ever end? "My king, this is so sudden. Have you discussed this with the moon priestess?" Xavier asked. I gave him the side eye. Of course, he could think of things like that in this situation. He was probably so eager to please his father that he had lost all sense of reasoning. He was supposed to be protesting this marriage but of course, he was asking something as irrelevant as if the moon priestess allowed this. I zoned out when my father started explaining the urgency of the situation and how, fortunately, the moon priestess thought it was a lucky day too. I thought of Asher. It w

45. ROSELINE — "you look good for someone who just murdered..."

I winced in pain. My back and my head hurt badly. But most importantly, my right foot felt like it was being pounded by seven hefty men. If I had known that Asher would beat me to it, I wouldn't have bothered with sneaking into the prison. Now I had hurt myself and had to live with this terrible pain. But at least, it wasn't all for nothing. The two kidnappers were now silent forever and I had nothing to fear. Now that I thought of it, it was also a good thing that I wasn't directly involved in their deaths. If the truth ended up coming to light, Asher would face the consequences on his own. I lay face up on my bed staring at the ceiling and trying to forget that Ariel would be getting married to Xavier in one week. But it was difficult to just act like everything was fine. I could not even think properly. All my plans had fallen through and now, security around Ariel had been tightened. I thought of Xavier. I imagined how he must be feeling at the moment and I wondered what h

46. XAVIER — "I have someone else"

I paced the length of my room pensively. The marriage was in six days. Six days until I became a married man. Six days until I made the worst mistake of my life. It was painful to think of but it was also something I could not get my mind off. I'd avoided Roseline like a plague since after I rescued Ariel because I did not think I could bear to face her. What would I say? How was she feeling now? I was not even sure if I owed her an explanation or not. All I wanted to do was sleep and forget that this whole thing ever happened. Maybe when I woke up this would all be a dream and I could be with Roseline. I even wished I could travel back to a time before I met Ariel. If there was any way out of this mess, I was ready to take it, even if it meant diving head-first into the fire. But these were the type of thoughts I could not voice out to anybody. They were buried deep inside my mind, suppressed and repressed. I poured wine into a glass and gulped it down. It tasted bitter or

47. ARIEL — "Get married for a month"

I stared at Xavier. I usually found it difficult to read his expression but right now, I could tell that he was excited and it surprised me. He was always so in control, always acting like everything was fine. Who knew that he had someone else back home? I sighed. Poor unlucky girl, she had fallen for a man like the prince. I tried to imagine that maybe he was not so mean to her but I just couldn't. He had a permanent scowl on his face and I knew he thought everyone was beneath him. But all that didn't matter to me now. The possibility of actually ending up with Asher thrilled me and I wondered why he had not thought of this sooner, it would have saved me lots of stress and heartache. "The plan is for you to get married to the princess. It will make both parents very happy and they won't suspect a thing. Moreover, it will ensure that the alliance goes through. It's a win-win." I looked at Asher as he spoke. I liked the way creases formed on his glabella as he talked and I
