Chapter 30: Stranger in the room

I spent the rest of the day in my room, reading a book I picked up somewhere in the library. I didn’t join the two for lunch and had my meal sent over. Because obviously, they wouldn’t enjoy my company, nor would I.I slept during the afternoon. Yesterday was a tough day and I didn’t have a good sleep because I dreamt of the maid who was thrown in the Cursed Mirror. I could still remember the sound of her screams vividly. It haunted me.When I woke up after the same nightmare, it was five in the afternoon. I went for a warm bath to soothe my nerves and forget about it. After staying in the tub for almost an hour, I heard the door of the bathroom click and got alarmed.“Who are you?” I panicked. I couldn’t see the person on the other side because of the frosted glass dividing the bathroom.“Oh shit! I’m sorry, I think I got lost,” it was a man’s voice I wasn’t familiar with. Then there was a loud thud from the shutting of the door.I slipped on the full bathrobe and went to see who it

Chapter 31: We'll go hunting

“It was accidental-““So he did?” Alpha's eyes darkened.“I was on the tub. He didn’t see me. He immediately left when he knew someone was inside,” I reasoned out. It wasn’t something big deal but with his line of questions, I couldn’t help but get intimidated.“Why didn’t you even lock your door?”“I usually don’t lock my doors because the maids would always knock even when it’s open. Besides, I didn’t think any of the guests would wander around this part of the mansion.”“Get dressed,” he ordered before leaving the room. When I went downstairs, my jaw dropped upon seeing what a mess the main hall was. The maids were panicking in removing the decorations and putting back the things in their original places. Some guests had already arrived but Calix didn’t mind any of them. Roselle and Sophie were speechless on the side, couldn’t stand in front of Calix with the foul mood he was in.“I know you want to throw a party for me, dear Aunt Roselle, and I am truly touched by your thoughtfuln

Chapter 32: Prisoner in Asylum

The car stopped in front of an old dilapidated building in the middle of nowhere which looked like an abandoned asylum. It was rather creepy, especially with the tall trees and thick fog surrounding the place.“What are we going to do here?” I asked Alpha Calix when we were both out of the car.“I told you. We’ll go hunting.”My gaze went down to the pistol on his right hand. I swallowed hard. I had a bad feeling about this.“But why are we…” I stopped when someone from inside came out. A man in a black suit, must be in his late mid or late thirties.“Good evening, Alpha Calix. He is on the third floor, room 006.”Calix just nodded and started to walk. I had no choice but to follow him.On contrary to what I assumed, the building wasn’t abandoned and was clean inside. Pretty decent, even. There was no elevator so we had to walk our way up. There were a few people around who seemed to be Calix's employees because they bowed when they saw him, which made me think this might be Calix's s

Chapter 33: Big black wolf

“He’s fooling around,” Alpha Calix said. The man spit some blood and smirked. He looked at me. “Come on, Lory. Why choose someone so ruthless? You can do better than this.”“Quit the act and give me the answer I want, bastard. Who do you work for?” Calix was tapping on his gun with a serious expression.“How did you know my father? Did you work for him?” I asked before Calix would lose all his patience and pull the trigger.“Well, you can say that I worked for him some time ago,” the man nodded to himself. “It’s a shame you forgot about me, Lory I must say I’m hurt.”“Who are you?”“What, you forgot my name already? I just introduced myself to you a couple of hours ago, remember?”“But didn’t you give me a fake name?”He shook his head, a small smile cracked on his lips. “Nikolai Wheeler, that is my name.”“Why did you want to see me-“ The sound of gunshot made me stop. I turned to Lucius and I saw him raise his brow at the sudden interruption.Nikolai chuckled as if he knew what was

Chapter 34: A loyal dog

With no chance of putting up a fight, I ran to the opposite side of the corridor where there was a huge window at the end. I didn’t think using stairs would be of great help, so I thought of jumping off the window instead. We were on the third floor. It would surely hurt but it wouldn’t kill me, right? The wolf ran after me. I would have thought twice of jumping but I didn’t have the chance. Before the wolf’s teeth could reach me, I had thrown myself out of the window.I closed my eyes, expecting the impact of my fall. But I didn’t fall to the ground. Instead, I felt myself in someone’s arms.“What a crazy stunt you pulled there, little wolf.”Alpha Calix's voice somehow calmed me. Thinking I was safe with him around. Well, he was still dangerous in my eyes but I was assured he wouldn’t hurt me. For now, at least.“I couldn’t shift. Is that your doing? Did you perhaps make me drink something to make sure I wouldn’t kill you?” I asked when he put me down.“You think I am that petty?” H

Chapter 35: Won't think twice

“I tried to shift earlier when the black wolf was about to attack me but I couldn’t,” I said when Alpha Calix wondered why I asked him if he made me drink something that wouldn’t allow me to shift to my wolf form.He looked at me with a slight crease on his forehead. His expression was serious which made me think he truly didn’t know about it.“Did it happen to you before?”“No,” I quickly answered. I didn’t shift often back then because it wasn’t needed. “Then it must be because of the Cursed Mirror. It might have weakened the state of your mind. Wolf shifters need a strong state of mind since it is where the shifting process starts and the reason why those who have mental problems couldn’t shift. This is just an assumption though. I didn’t study about it because I never knew someone who got out of the mirror.”“Does that mean I wouldn’t be able to shift forever? Or is it just temporary?” Wolf shifters who couldn’t shift were considered a disgrace and bad luck to their family and pa

Chapter 36: Honey Trap

The scent of alcohol and loud music welcomed me when I entered the club. It was one of those high-end clubs in the city, and it was my first time visiting one. But I wasn’t ignorant and Alpha Calix briefed me about it, so I didn’t look like a nerd trying to fit in.I was wearing a mesh top with a tube inside and a black skirt and heels. I didn’t tie my hair because every time I do, I look younger than my age. Being chased out for being a minor was the last thing I would want to experience.Like Alpha promised, he stationed men around the club to make sure Benedict wouldn’t pull some stunt, like try to abduct me. Although there were a lot of people who would see, it wasn’t impossible. Lucius also said he’d be staying nearby and that he would know all my moves because he had access to the CCTV cameras around here, which I wasn’t surprised of. A very influential man like him, both in our kind and humans, he surely could manipulate most things.I went to the bar counter to act like I was

Chapter 37: Caught in strife

Come back to him? Was he serious?I wanted to laugh because it sounded awfully ridiculous to my ears.“Are you drunk, Benedict?”He hissed. “It’s you who is drunk, Lory.”“Right,” I agreed. “But I want to get drunk… I don’t know what to do now you know. I want to kick your ass off, but I don’t know where to start. I’m not even sure if I can trust Alpha Calix or not. I have no one else.” I looked down on my glass, trying to bring a bit of tears out.“And whose fault is that? You should have stayed with me instead of running away. Life is far crueler than you think. See where your stubbornness brought you? You were caught by human traffickers and sold off to the underground society. You’re nothing less than a plaything to that man. Staying by his side means you would either get killed by his enemies or you’d get killed by him.”“And you’re suggesting that I better stay with you, the person who betrayed my family and pack?” I chuckled. “Seriously? You think I am that dumb?”He said somet

Chapter 38: Friendly advice

“Don’t you think it’s a good chance to get to Benedict’s good side?” I whispered to Alpha Calix because I could see that our plan was working out well.Alpha narrowed his eyes a bit. He stared at me for a moment before he answered a hard “No.”“Why? Look, he’s biting the trap. This is our opportunity. Let’s just say I’d stay with him for a few days to think about our relationship. After that, you can always make a way to get me back.”“Not now, Lory,” he dismissed the idea. “Back off, Leandro, if you want your men to leave alive. I’m a little merciful but not when I’m in a foul mood.”Alpha Calix dragged me out of the club. His butler was waiting outside and opened the car right away when he saw us.He was silent the whole drive to the mansion. He was serious as if something critical happened to him. Was he thinking why the Vancouver pack wanted me? I wanted to ask him but chose not to.When we arrived, I thought he would talk to me but he didn’t and went straight to his room. I did t

Chapter 39: It's your job

The next day, I woke up with the sunlight hitting my face. That was when I realized I forgot to close the windows last night after I got back from the kitchen. I was done taking a bath when I heard a knock on my door.I opened it and saw Bentley standing straight. He was smaller than average men. We were just of the same height. “Miss Loraine, Alpha Calix is requesting you in his study room.”“Okay,” I nodded, wondering if it was about last night. It would be better if that would be the case because a lot of things happened last night. I felt like something was wrong. Why would the hell other people be interested in me, especially a huge pack? When I got to the study room, I saw Calix standing in front of the window. But when he sensed someone went in, he turned to face me.“How’s your sleep? Good?” He asked in his usual light tone and blank eyes.“Adequate.”He nodded and went in front of his table and leaned on it with his one hand laid flat above.“You did a good job last night, li
