CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY ONE

“Well,” Fera takes a step back from me. “The effects of the moonshine are still there but good news is that they’re weakening.”It’s two days after I stumbled on to that room with the portraits of the Righs. Damien has been in a quiet mood ever since, almost pensive. He didn’t get angry with me for going into what was clearly a private room. “I thought that wasn’t possible because –”“Your false memories are folding under the pressure of current events.”However, Fera doesn’t look too pleased.“What?” I ask her, warily.“This pace is not normal,” she finally replies, her voice tense. “If you keep trying to force yourself to remember and try to sort through what’s true and what’s not, it’s going to affect your brain. So many nose bleeds back to back aren’t good for you.”“I-”“I know you’re frustrated, Isabel,” Fera sighed. “I would be going mad if I was in your shoes as well but you have to let nature takes its course. Your memories are going to return gradually and you have

I stare at her, stunned.“W-What’s that supposed to mean?” I stammer.Fera studies me and then her voice is unbearably gentle, “Isabel, none of the Righs ever had children with the elves.”“But Sila-”“Sila was –” I can see Fera struggle with herself, “Sila was one of the Righs that – lived with the elves for a while. We weren’t able to get to her – She killed herself in front of Damien. She is his biggest regret.”I can see the loopholes in her story, the missing gaps but my head is spinning right now. I’m trying to gI feel numb, “The pictures-”“I don’t know about these pictures but no elf can ever procreate outside of their race. Aside from Balin’s word, how do you know that those children were Sila’s?”Aside from that one memory, the pictures, and the stain on the floor, there is nothing else. All of these could be faked right? But for some reason, my heart doesn’t agree with the logic.A part of me felt that loss in a way that seems to too genuine. I open my mouth and t

I fall back as he straddles me, licking my face.“How are you here?!” I’m half crying as I grab his neck, hugging him. He just barks happily and snuggles closer. He’s heavy but I don’t care.I sniffle, burying my face in his neck, “I’m so glad you’re alive!”“I see you’ve met Cerebus,” comes a voice from behind. I look above my head from where I’ pinned to the ground and see Damien standing there, looking amused.“Cerebus?”The name sounds slightly familiar, “Wait, the three-headed dog?!”Damien raises a brow, “The what?”“The hell hound,” I feel a bit sheepish explaining the mythical creature to him.“I assure you, Cerebus does not have three heads. And he’s not a hell hound, whatever that is supposed to be.”He walks over before sitting down on the ground besides me before whistling sharply. Cerebus scrambles off me, allowing me to sit up, “Cerebus is one of the lifelong companions of the Righ. He’s almost as old as the Tree of Souls, I would say.”I blink at the large do

Ever since that evening, Damien often likes to pop up where I am. He used to do it before as well, but now it’s a more frequent event. A part of me is convinced he just enjoys getting under my skin.Once he has me all bristling and riled up, he remembers he has something to do and disappears. “I know wolf shifters don’t get blood pressure but I swear I might be different,” I complain to Fera over breakfast. “He doesn’t leave me alone!”Fera grins, “If you hate him so much why are your eyes always following him?”“Because he’s – I mean, he’s just annoying, Fera!”Fera laughs, grabbing some more butter from across the table, “I wish I could say that this will stop but it won’t. You might not see him for a couple of days though. He and Seth are planning to go repair the barrier. I don’t know when he’s leaving though.”I hesitate, “How is Seth?”Fera’s smile disappears and she looks down at her plate, “He lost both sisters in one go. Both at his own sword. That does something to a

“God, I hate you,” I mutter as I throw myself onto the bed.Damien is watching me from the doorway, “You know I can help you feel better.”“No thanks,” I give him a nasty look. “You’re the reason I’m in this position right now.”“You’re in this position because you’ve grown lazy.”I hiss, “I would smack you if I could move.”“Want me to get closer?”“Aargh!” I scream into the bed in frustration. Then I feel a hand stroking my hair, “I’ll have Fera bring you some muscle relaxing potion. It’ll make you feel better.”My eyes fill up with tears as I feel my whole body ache, and I mumble, “You’re such a jerk, Damien. I swear. You didn’t have to go so hard on me.”I don’t know why I always get so vulnerable when he’s gentle with me. “Will you stop crying if I say sorry?”“I’m not sad-crying!” I growl, embarrassed. “I’m angry crying. These are tears of anger!”He chuckles, “My bad.”“Just go,” I let my body go limp as a noodle. “I just want to float away and not feel a thing.”

I freeze in shock, “W-What? But I’ve been here this whole time. There was – the fruit that I ate maybe –”I’m scrambling but the look in Damien’s eyes is terrible, “You’re saying you can tell that there is moonshine in her system?”Fera picks up a small vial of my blood or what looks like my blood “It shouldn’t be possible but it’s here. I’ve been comparing Isabel’s blood sample very day since she came here. When she first came here, her blood was tainted with small specks of what I can only call silver dust. As time went on, the particles of silver began to disappear. For the past few days, she has been experiencing more headaches and nausea and her attitude was getting colder so I drew another sample this morning. This is what I found.”The vial is shimmering.“Somebody has been feeding her moonshine. There is no mistake about it.”“So, there’s a traitor in the castle,” Damien says, coldly. “I’ll dig them out. In fact, I’ll clean up this entire castle, starting with the kitchen.

“How does moonshine affect me now?” I feel confused. “Whatever brainwashing they did, it’s nearly out of my system. How can-”Fera looks grim, “I don’t know. You seem fine aside from this weakness. But I can’t say how much damage moonshine can do to you now that it has been reintroduced. It seems that we may have miscalculated what moonshine is capable of.”Her hands is on my chest and it glows.“What are you doing?”“Checking your general health.”She’s quiet and then frowns, “Your wolf is too weak. This is not good. How long did you say this has been going on for?”“A while but I didn’t pay much attention to it. I should have.”Fera’s voice is tight, “From what I can understand, your body is deteriorating slowly. You need the cure.”“But getting into the Shadow Forest is impossible.”Fera looks tense, “Yeah. Damien has tried. But he’ll come up with something. Don’t worry. In the meantime, I’m going to try and keep giving you potions to control your health.”Cerebus is by my

“Take me to the portal!”I follow after Rina and she takes me all the way into the forest. “Why did you open a portal this deep in the forest?!” I demand, angry. “I – It was just – That’s where Fera asked me to set it up.”I find the situation odd but then Fera had been acting odd for quite a while. “How does the portal work? How is she supposed to return?”“Our – My family’s portals are connected by blood. The blood of the one passing through the portal is used to reopen the portal at the same spot.”“So you basically gave her the information and means to go into the elven territory and then return. Are you crazy? Why would you just open a portal for her?!”Rina looks close to tears but I’m too angry to care.As we go deeper inside the forest, I hear footsteps behind me and Dayla is running towards us, “What’s going on?”“Fera might have gone into the elven territory!” I say, urgently. “We have to stop her.”Rina is silent and I can see she’s upset. However, when we en

I blink when I enter the elven village territory. My heart skips a beat out of raw fear. I don’t want to run into Balin or anyone. If they see me here they will drag me back. But I miscalculated one very important thing. There is moonshine swimming in my system. And I find myself drawn to this place. This time since I am aware, it’s easier to fight off the effects. The portal is still closing behind me and just when I think it’s about to, Cerebus’s head pops out, his tongue lolling out.I gape at him as the rest of him follows.“No!” I whisper to him. “You’re for sure going to attract attention here, you idiot! Go back!” He stares at me, panting happily.“I know you can understand me!” I hiss at him, fiercely. “Don’t pretend otherwise.”He woofs at me, happily, and then drops something out of his mouth onto the grass. I blink before crouching down to pick up the drool covered item. After a moment, I say, “I’m not even going to ask you where you kept this in your mouth. But

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY

I’m locked in one of the cottages, my face throbbing from where Balin hit me a couple of times. My forehead is stained in my blood from where he smashed it against the tree. And the taste of moonshine is heavy in my mouth.I know he’s coming back. When he dragged me here, I saw the elves cast disdainful looks my way. There’s no confusion in my mind as to who the real enemy is anymore. I’ve tried throwing up the moonshine but it’s difficult to do some when my hands and legs are tied. I hear footsteps as he approaches and I can’t help the cold fear that washes over me. He enters and it’s like looking at a stranger. That’s what bothers me as well. When he hit me with that arrow, I kept making excuses for him. I know that it was brainwashing but since that night at my childhood home and when he captured me now, I can’t see a trace of the man I had once thought I loved. And it’s just been a matter of weeks.Either I was extremely gullible. Or just very desperate to belong somewhere.
