CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY ONE

STERLINGWhen I wake up, Ayala is back in the dungeon. I’m so happy to see her - I always hate when Coello takes her out without me. “I have an idea,” Ayala tells me once I sit up and blink through the dimness, letting her know that I’m up.“What kind of an idea?”“A spell that might get us back to earth,” she tells me. “One I remember trying with Layla.”“A spell?” I’m curious - we’ve gone over, and over, and over, the entire list of spells Ayala knows from her time on earth with her Star Twin. Plus the spells she doesn’t know, ones she’s only barely heard of or half remembers. I thought we were long past strategizing about spells Ayala might be able to perform.“Yeah,” she tells me. “I just remembered one.”“Are you sure? Is there something you’re holding back?”Ayala shakes her head, but she won’t look at me. Finally, she admits that she has a half formed plan, but thinks it will work better if I don’t know much about it beforehand. “You just have to tru

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY TWO

The last few times Sterling went out on one of Coello’s stupid missions, he came back without anything I could use in my plan.He always seems to disappointed in himself, worried that he’s let me down. The truth is that I was actually relieved. Every time he returned empty handed was another day that I didn’t have to put this awful plan in motion. Another day I could try to come up with something, anything, besides this. But when he brings back the dirt, holding it triumphantly in his hand after turning out his pocket, I know my time is up. “It’s perfect,” I say, trying to keep my voice light and my smile bright. He passes it over to me, and soon I have a handful of dry earth dust.“What are you going to do with it?” Sterling asks me. My heart breaks at the excitement in his voice. He really does trust me to get us both out of here.“I’m going to try and cast a spell,” I lie. I wish I could tell him the truth of what I’m planning. But I can’t. It would put every

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY THREE

“What is this?” Coello shouts, pointing at me accusingly. “Are you trying to forfeit your agreement? To trade your life for the child’s?”“What’s going on?” Sterling asks, sleepily rubbing his eyes. “I’m not trying to escape,” I say. I come to the front of the cage, reaching out toward Coello. “But I needed you.”Coello raises one eyebrow. “You needed me? For what reason?”“For all the reasons,” I say. “I need you. I want you. I wish to become your mate.”Coello sniffs. “What about this other mate of yours?” He gestures toward Sterling’s cage. I can’t bring myself to look at Sterling and see the hurt and confusion I know must be plain on his face.“I renounce him,” I say. “I am tired of being mated to someone who shares my captivity, and who has failed to protect me. I see now that with your power and majesty, you’re my intended mate.”“Ayala!” Sterling is screaming my name. I hear himself bashing his fists against the bars of his cage, and smell the singed fl

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FOUR

I pad quietly down the hall toward the Moon Rabbit’s chambers. The white pelt, his own fur, shed so many years ago to trade for my entire life, is warm and soft against my skin. It’s nestled under my dress, where I hope he won’t be able to see it.Everything rests on this. My heart pounds in my throat as I make my way toward the heavy, ornately carved door that leads to his bedroom. The hallway air is cold, and perfectly still. My footsteps don’t echo like they would in a similar hallway back on earth. Nothing movies besides me, as I make my determined way toward Coello. He thinks we’re about to mate. I have other plans.I push the door open, bowing my head deferentially.“Welcome, my little pup,” he says. He’s standing beside his massive bed, his shirt unbuttoned. He grins at me like a predator over its prey.I take a deep breath and remind myself that he is a rabbit, and I am a wolf. And I am not his.“Hello,” I say, keeping my voice low.“I am glad that y

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FIVE

The bars of his cage are twisted and mangled. The room smells like singed flesh. But my mate is nowhere to be found.I search frantically for Sterling, calling his name as I run around the dungeons.Nothing. Only silence. I scream for him until my throat is raw and scratchy. I run up and down every staircase, every hallway, until my feet are sore and bruised from pounding them against the stone floor.I tear open doors, growing more desperate after each room turns out to be empty. The entire time, I can feel Coello’s hatred and rage emanating from the bundle in my arms. He’s kicking and twisting, and I know that if he ever got the opportunity to escape, he’d absolutely destroy me. But I don’t have time to think about any of that. I have to find Sterling. He’s not in the dungeons. He’s not in the throne room. He’s not in the living quarters. I go outside, circling the strange castle, calling out for him while trying to ignore the endless emptiness surrounding me

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY SIX

A little while later, Greyson shows back up, with Layla and Arnold close behind him. He steps into the house, says hello to me with a quick nod, then starts looking around the room.“Where’s Sterling?” At his question, I can’t keep it together any longer. I burst into tears. Greyson is such a good Beta for this pack. When he saw that I had returned, he knew we’d need Layla and Arnold to come right away, so he ran to get them. He didn’t stay to see his brother first. He put the pack, and me, before his own needs. As a Star Twin, I can’t imagine ever being able to put anything above my own desire to be with my sister Layla.I sob harder, hit with the realization that Greyson is such an amazing Beta in part because he trained with Sterling. They were brothers, raised with the same values. Sterling is such an incredible leader, and protector, and mate. I miss him so much. I need him so badly.Layla sits on the sofa beside me, hugging me against her side as I

Layla and Arnold leave, carrying Coello with them. I feel much safer now that I’m no longer responsible for the writhing bundle, and knowing that all of Layla and Arnold’s expertise will be used to find a way to contain him.I’m more skeptical about their plan to harness his magical power. Sure, I’ve seen Layla do all sorts of amazing things when it comes to creating or using magical artifacts, but the last time we tried to get some of the Moon Rabbit’s magic for ourselves in the form of his pelt, it resulted in me being traded away to become his slave for centuries.I can understand her desire to try, though. If we end up needing that white pelt to continue holding him captive, then we won’t be able to use it to protect the pack. It is that pelt’s magic that has kept the San Diego pack safe and healthy over generations upon generations. Layla won’t want to leave her pack undefended without it. I hope she and Arnold can figure something out. It’s about time that Coello learns

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY EIGHT

We finally find ourselves in the celestial realm. My feet are on solid ground again, or at least what passes for solid ground in this realm. Sarah and Nash are standing on one side of me, with Greyson on the other. Stella, still in wolf cub form, is running in large circles around our feet, sniffing and looking around. “Whew,” Greyson says, shaking out his shoulders and looking around. “That was…something else,” Nash agrees. We’re at the central portals, the primary entrance and exit that most celestial beings use to shift between worlds. I’ve never actually been here before, since Coello liked to bring me to and from earth on his own power. The fact that Stella can access this area directly through her shifter magic seems to imply that she, as a Crescent Child, is herself a celestial being. I try not to think about that too much. I’ve only ever known celestial beings to be dangerous and aloof, allied with Coello instead of me.“This place is wild,” Sarah says, lo

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY NINE

When we reach the top of the tower, I can see that Sterling is there. He’s lying on the ground, looking as if he’s sleeping peacefully. He’s still wearing the moonstone collar that Coello locked around his neck.I start to run toward him, but something stops me - the sight of a woman with massive pale green wings, like a luna moth. She descends from the sky and settles lightly on her feet, standing between me and Sterling.“Who are you?” I ask, hesitant to approach an unknown celestial being but desperate to get to Sterling.“My name is Parvana,” she says. Her voice is gentle and lilting. In some ways, she reminds me of Layla. “I have been watching over the shifter boy.”“His name is Sterling,” Greyson says, stepping up to stand beside me. “And he’s my brother.”“So I see,” Parvana says, her voice calm and light. She looks Greyson up and down with a soft smile. “Is he okay?” I ask. “Can I see him?”Parvana steps aside, dipping one of her wings down in a gesture of

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY

“What!?” I spin around to face Parvana, shocked and devastated at what I’ve just heard. “What do you mean, he can’t come back?” Greyson demands. Parvana sighs deeply, making her wings flutter. “His spirit has become too entangled with the celestial realm,” she explains. “Time flows differently here. He has been here for a long time, and since he believed his mate to be lost, he no longer maintained his connection to your earthly realm.”“So he didn’t want to come back when he thought he wouldn’t have Ayala,” Greyson says. “But now he knows it was all a lie, and that she actually loves him. So he can come home now.”Parvana shakes her head. “It is not that simple. He fell deeply into his slumber, into the world he inhabits here. His body has become too celestial, his spirit too intricately woven into our reality.”“That can’t be true,” I beg. “He has to be able to come back to me.”Parvana only shakes her head again. “He sought solace for his grief, and in doing so,
