Chapter 109

KEENA My father watches me carefully as I pace back and forth on his office rug. Ward isn't here and my father refuses to tell me where he has gone. Only that he will be back shortly. "You are going to ruin my rug," my father says with a chuckle. "Can you please calm down?" Turning around I glare in my father's direction. "Maybe I could calm down and sit if you would just tell me where Ward is." "I told you," my father breathes out in frustration. "It is a personal matter." I scoff loudly. "Since when are things personal between mates?" "Since today," my father says grumpily. Just as I am about to begin fussing at my father again when the door opens and Ward strolls in. I don't miss the bandage that is wrapped around the crook of his elbow. "What happened?" I say as I cross my arms over my chest. "Just some routine blood work," Ward says but he won't meet my gaze. I breathe heavily in and out while I look between my father and Ward. "Fine," I finally s

Chapter 110

KEENA "Absolutely not," I scream. "I am not leaving, I refuse to run." "Don't think of it as running," my mother tries her best to reason with me. "Think of it as protecting the rest of Lycan City from another rogue attack." "So I am just supposed to run to the Red River Pack and put them in danger?" I scoff. "They are far less equipped to deal with these kinds of attacks. There has to be a better solution." My mother draws her bottom lip in between her teeth and I can see that she is deep in thought. She knows as well as I do that sending Ward and me to another pack is not the answer. "She's right," my mother finally says. "Sending them both to another pack would only serve to put that pack in danger. You would have to live among the humans." My eyes widen in shock. "Are you suggesting that I turn rogue?" My voice becomes high pitched and nervous. "Keena, You are a human," my father finally butts in. "The only one that would be at risk from going rogue woul

Chapter 111

KEENA Snow is falling lightly as we cross out of the borders of Lycan City. Ward keeps checking the rearview mirror as if he is expecting someone to find us. I press my head against the cool window of the black car as it runs quietly down the road. It is a lot different than Ward's mustang and I find myself missing it. "Where is your mustang?" I ask curiously. Ward's knuckles tighten on the steering wheel. "It is too noticeable. We had to leave it behind." "Oh," I say quietly. I lay my head back against the window and watch the snow fall. It would truly be a beautiful sight if I wasn't so ridden with anxiety at the moment. The amulet hums against my skin and the feeling is making me tired. I close my eyes and let the hum lull me off to sleep. I open my eyes and find myself within the darkness of the void once again. There is a light shining ahead of me and I know that Lilith will be waiting for me. The slimy tendrils of self doubt are lapping at my skin. They b

Chapter 112

KEENA We have been on the run for about two weeks. Skipping from hotel to hotel every couple of days. At the end of each hotel stay I use the phone in the room to check in with my parents. They assure me that they are getting closer to finding the High Priestess and her coven and I will be able to return home soon. Not being within the pack is starting to take its toll on Ward. He is on edge and I know it is because his lycan is itching to go for a run. Now that my lycan is awake again I am beginning to feel the same way. My lycan has been cooped up in the recesses of my mind for so long that she is dying to be set free once again. I spend the majority of the quiet hours during our drive arguing with my lycan about how I am unable to let her free. Over the past weeks my magical powers are slowly becoming stronger. I cannot tell just how strong I am becoming because I have been unable to test my powers. But I can feel the familiar surge of power beneath my fingertips, beg

Chapter 113

KEENA Ward and I cuddle together under the tree canopy. The trees are providing little shelter from the frigid winter wind. I don't know how long we were under the trees waiting but it feels like the witches are never going to come. "How much longer do you think we should wait?" Ward asks as he shivers at my side. Just as I am about to answer him the wind picks up and swirls around us. Ward lets go of my arm to shield his face from the icy wind but as soon as he does he disappears from my side. "Ward," I scream over the wind but I can't hear a response over the wind. Raising my hands in the air I swipe them down quickly and the wind disperses around me. The snow that was swirling around me falls to the ground in a perfect circle. The footsteps that Ward and I had left in the snow have now been covered and I don't know my way out of the forest. "Shit," I mumble to myself. "This was a bad idea." "Probably," a voice says as a cloaked figure walks out of the woods.

Chapter 114

WARD The pentagram that is glowing red around me begins to crack as an ear piercing scream fills the air. I cup my hands over my ears trying to drown out the sound. The sound of glass shattering catches my attention and I see the windows that surround the circular room breaking under the pressure of the scream. Shielding my eyes from the glass that is flying through the room, I try to look for the origin of the scream. Off to my right I can see Keena standing on the edge of the pentagram with her eyes widened in shock. The shards of glass are suspended in the air as Keena tries to figure out how to control the magic that she created. By the look on Keena's face I can tell that she is panicked and that she needs my help. I no longer feel the strength of the power of the witches holding back my lycan, so I shift seamlessly to help my mate. "I can't control the magic," Keena cries out as if she is in pain. Dropping to her knees, she looks exhausted from the amount of power

Chapter 115

WARD I hold my cheek in shock as the Queen rushes to her daughter's side. Keena groans loudly as she tries to roll over on the cold porch of the royal mansion. "What the fuck did you do?" The Queen roars at me. At the sound of the Queen's roar, the King appears at the door. He looks at the scene that is in front of him with a confused look on his face. I can't imagine what it looks like. Keena and I are both mostly naked and covered in bruises from the fight with the witches. Not to mention Keena is rolling around on the front porch in pain. "What the fuck?" The King echoes his mate's words. King Erebus steps forward and pushes me out of the way. He takes one look at his daughter lying on the ground and carries her into the royal mansion. I try to follow them up the stairs but the Queen holds out her arm and refuses to let me pass. "Explain," she says as crosses her arms over her chest. "Can I put on some clothes first?" I ask, suddenly cold and self consciou

Chapter 116

Ward The sun shines through the window too early in the morning. I feel like I haven't slept well in months. My eyes squint against the bright light that is shining through the window. Looking to my left I see that Keena is still sleeping peacefully beside me. She hadn't moved an inch all night, but the rise and fall of her chest lets me know that she is still alive. I wipe a piece of her hair out of her face and I notice that there is a thin sheen of sweat on her forehead. Her eyebrows are knitted together like she is in pain. Pink blush covers her cheeks and her pump red lips are pursed together in a pout. There is something wrong. Laying the back of my hand on her forehead it feels like she is burning up. Panic rises in my chest. She is running a fever. Quickly, I get out of the bed and rush to the bathroom to grab a cool washcloth. I gently place the washcloth on her forehead and her forehead immediately relaxes. I open my mind link to alert the King that his dau

Chapter 117

KEENA "Poor little Princess," a distant voice hisses at me. "Failed again," another one says in return. "She will never defeat the High Priestess. She will only put her family in danger." The first voice echoes in my mind. I don't need to open my eyes to know that I will be surrounded by the darkness of the void. Maybe this time Selene will finally take me to the afterlife. I am tired of constantly being in a state of unrest. The slimy tendrils grab at my skin. They wrap themselves around my arms and legs, holding me tightly to the ground. This time I don't try to fight back. I don't care if I am stuck here forever. It is better than being on the run for the rest of my life. "Poor Princess," the tendrils of self doubt hiss at me. "She will never be able to go home." The hisses of self doubt are louder this time. I know it is because the tendrils of the void are right. I am nothing more than a failure. Finally, I let my eyes flutter open and I see that the

Chapter 118

WARD I have been laying beside Keena for three days. Only getting up to use the bathroom. I haven't even taken the time to shower. The King and the Queen keep trying to convince me that she will wake up soon and I need to be well rested when she does wake, but I don't want to leave her side. I remember what it felt like to wake up with her by my side and I don't want her to go through that. "Princess... Keena... I don't know if you can hear me or not, but I want you to know that I love you. I thought your plan was perfection and I am sorry that it didn't work the way that you wanted it to. Please come back to me." I gently shake her shoulders but she still doesn't move. I hear someone at the door of Keena's room and I turn around to see Kayla standing with her arms crossed over her chest. "It stinks in here," she says as she walks into the bedroom. She leans in and takes a whiff of my hair. "It is you. You are stinking up the joint." "Shut up, Kayla," I grumble at
