CHAPTER 81: A STALKER IN THE MAKING

Samuel closed the box when Kali came into the room, and he set it down on the bed beside him. "I was going to tell you. You know that, right?" "Yes. I am not mad." "You look mad." "I am not. This is me being worried." "Worried?" "Doesn't this...I don't know, scare you?" "That some weirdo is playing an expensive game of "who sent it?"" "That this weirdo is spending so much money on you. You haven't met this guy before, but he knows work is hard for you and how stressed you are with all the gossip. He misses your eyes, your beauty." Kali stared at the box. "How many times did you read that card." "Is that what matters now? Listen to me. This guy can be dangerous. If he is making fantasies in his head and convincing himself that there is a relationship between the two of you. He could do something dangerous one of these days." Kali seemed to understand where he was going. She immediately shifted from sceptical to worried. He didn't want to scare her, but it was something that t

CHAPTER 82: THE FEIGNING OF MISERY

"And this." Samuel came up behind Kali as she reached for her necklace. He leaned down to kiss the back of her neck and shoulder before lowering the necklace he held to her chest. "Is for you."It wasn't sapphires like the one the stranger sent, even though he had been tempted, but it was an equal match. The necklace was made from rubies and diamonds and matched the dress she had chosen for the night. One of the bright sides of her picking her outfits weeks before an event. He hadn't been sure when he ordered the necklace, but seeing her face light up with amazement and joy-filled him with confidence.Kali gasped. "What is this?""Last Friday, you got a necklace that upset you. I don't know; I thought I could get you one that made you smile. The event tonight was a perfect excuse to do it.""Oh, Samuel. It's gorgeous.""Like you.""You cheesy bastard." She popped to her feet and threw herself at him.Her arms went around his sh

CHAPTER 83: WHAT WE SAY IN THE DARK

Kali left the gallery for the garden in search of Samuel. He had disappeared for a while, and she soon began to worry about him. So, she walked through the maze of hedges and colourful flowers, whispering his name. “Kali?” She finally heard. She followed his voice around another wall of plants before she saw him. Relieved, Kali ran to him, throwing herself into his arms and laughing.

CHAPTER 84: A NIGHT OF DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES

Samuel helped her out of her coat when they got home. It felt heavenly to step out of her heels and feel the cool tiles on the soles of her feet. Hours of standing and walking around the big gallery made her sore. Plus, the night had been one big rollercoaster after another. It wasn't enough to have Ysabel on her back; it seemed she also couldn't get enough talking down to from Samuel's grandfather. The conversation with Samuel in the garden also filled her with a whirlwind of emotions. They didn't talk about it, but she did wonder if he wanted kids. Personally, she wouldn't want to have a child until she was sure they wouldn't be breaking up the next day, but she did love the idea of a child. He said he didn't want to divorce her. She could feel her heart tremble when she remembered the directness with which he said those words. She looked at him now, his face otherwise blank as he folded her coat and dropped it on the sofa. When he caught her staring, he smiled.

CHAPTER 85: HOW HEAVY IS THE TRUTH

Christen rushed up the stairs, throwing herself against the door as she banged it in urgency. Her head had been so full she forgot to take her jacket with her when she left the house, and walking in the nippy cold had left her chilly. But there were other things to worry about. Things that kept her from enjoying the rest of the party or falling asleep as her mind wouldn’t stop racing. She banged again, calling for Vincent, wondering if he was asleep. She hadn’t thought about that. It was pretty late at night, and though he wasn't an early sleeper, she couldn't see any of the lights on in the house. She was desperate and needed to talk to someone before she folded in on herself. Vincent was the next best thing. Relief filled her when she saw a light come on before the door opened, and a sleepy eyes Vincent stood in front of her.&

CHAPTER 86: THE MORNING AFTER

Kali stretched under the covers as he kissed the grove of her spine. His hand skimmed across her stomach and interlaced with hers. When he kissed her cheek, she leaned into him, sighing as she turned, plastering herself to him. Still catching his breath, he laid back on the headboard while she propped her chin on his chest."Thankfully, tomorrow is Saturday," Kali whispered, drawing on his chest with her fingers. Maybe we can spend the day together? In the house?"He opened his eyes to look at her, his fingers combing her hair over her back. "I don't have anything planned, so I don't see why not."She smiled, climbing up his side to kiss him tentatively. His palm spread over her back, holding her to him until she pulled away to rest on his shoulder."Can I ask you something?""Sure.""Was it okay?"“Hope you are not asking for what I think you are asking.”"Maybe I am." He said, combing his hair away from his face.

CHAPTER 87: UNHINGED

"What do you mean.""About why you got married." Flora raised her hand again, but he leaned away before she could touch him. "I know you didn't cheat on me with Kali. I have known it since the beginning, but I was hurt and angry, and I turned my heart off and listened to my brain. I doubted you, and you don't know how much I regret it."Samuel pulled on his hair, frustration clawing through him as they stared at each other.

CHAPTER 88: A NEW PLAYER ON THE BOARD

Kali brightened when Samuel walked in the door. Giovanna had some friends over, and Kali decided to hole herself up in the room while she entertained her friends."Hey, you. How did it go?""We fixed the problem."He dropped his bag and then his jacket, looking drawn and exhausted as he dragged himself to the bed. Kali crawled to meet him, managing a kiss before he collapsed on the mattress."Must have been tiresome."He groaned, "Amongst other things."Kali nodded. She helped him out of his sneakers and peeled his T-shirt off. When she got back beside him, he opened his eyes to look at her."What's wrong?" She asked, resting a hand on his chest."Flora knows everything.""I don't understand.""About our marriage and my mom's involvement in our break up. She knows everything.""How?""Best guess is Christen.""Christen?""Flora came by the office not too long after you left. She said sh

CHAPTER 89: AN UNLIKELY TRUCE

Samuel chuckled when Kali brushed her fingertip ever so gently along the bottom of his ear. "You know that tickles." "I find it odd. Such an odd place to be sensitive in." "Kali, a lot of people are sensitive behind their ears." She did it again, raising goosebumps on his skin. He shivered, his breath shaking as he shrunk away. "Stop, or I would throw you off me." She laughed. "Fine. Such a baby." Giovanna had left earlier with her friends, and Kali dragged him to the pool for them to enjoy some time in the open. She lay between his legs, muttering on about her sister's schooling and inviting her aunt to spend Christmas with them since she didn't think they'd travel home. Samuel listened absently, half his mind on the conversation and the other half on the conversation in their room. He hoped Flora and Kali would never cross paths, but even if they did, he didn't want them to fight. Flora was determined. Despite his bes

CHAPTER 90: A NEUTRAL PARTY

The next weekend, June visited the house, bringing some cake with her to say hello. It had been a while since she came over, and Kali was happy to see her. The house had been empty since Samuel left to visit a friend, and Giovanna had decided to spend the morning at her parent's house."How is my brother-in-law?" June asked."Good. He went to visit a friend. What about you? How have you been?""Busy. I have a report I have to submit in two weeks.""What about it?"Giovanna walked into the kitchen, stopping short when she noticed them. She took her headphones off and glanced at the cake on the counter before looking back at them."Hey!" June greeted, waving Giovanna over. "I came to see my sister. I didn't think to see you here. Do you want some? It's homemade."Giovanna glanced at the slice of cake. She hesitated before relenting and taking a seat."Yes. Thank you."June cut out a slice, and Kali handed her another paper
