Chapter 251

FIONA SAT ON THE bed and stared at the wall. She hadn't slept much despite how comfortable the bed was, and how good the sheets felt after a gloriously hot shower. Nothing could touch her heart. It'd been a whole day now since she'd last seen Marco and yet...it felt as though he was there with her. Just outside her line of sight. She wanted him to be there...and she hated him and she...she didn't know what she felt for him. It was too jumbled. She'd been numb with fear before. This was...a different kind of numbness. She ached deep inside of her. As many times as she'd experienced heartbreak before, this was possibly worse. Worse than even Heath. With him...she'd been pissed. Angry. She'd wanted revenge. This thing with Marco ran deeper though.Marco knew her truth. All of it. And she'd let him use her.She should have known when things started going bad, when he had a friend nearby that could solve all her problems while she took a vacation, that it wasn't right.Who did tha

Chapter 252

MARCO SLAMMED THE DOOR shut to Ghost's one-room rental. It wasn't the same one as before. It was across town in another walk-up over a different store. At least this one didn't smell of grease, and it had two single beds. As a bonus they had a hot plate and a tiny sink, in addition to a bathroom down the hall. So long as they paid in cash, no one asked questions."No luck?" Ghost didn't turn from the mountain of monitors.Marco was pretty sure Ghost added a new one every time he left."No. He's not fucking there." Marco dropped onto the single bed, exhaustion weighing him down. The texts from his family weren't stopping. Everyone wanted to know what the hell was going on, and where was Danny? Since Marco couldn't give them answers about current events, he'd gone in search of his cousin and come up empty handed."He's probably jacked up somewhere, living the life." Ghost's tone was dismissive to the point it got Marco's hackles up."What would you know?" It wasn't like Ghost w

Chapter 253

FIONA STOOD IN THE kitchen, too scared to cross the living room back to her cave of a room.Scott was seriously pissed. All she'd been able to figure out was that they were somehow locked out of not only her computer, but all of the machines connected to the network they had remote access to.The phone calls had started rolling in a few minutes after Scott threw a tablet against the wall. The shards of glass and bits of the external casing had been worked into the carpet by the other two guys going back and forth. Apparently, they weren't the only ones who could no longer access their machines. If what she suspected was true, this block extended not only to their location, but whatever server system they were attached to. Thursday morning, everyone in the company would be just getting in, trying to get their email. It was a disaster.Fiona didn't know a lot about the way the federal government ran their IT departments, but she knew the kind of permissions it took to just get ac

Chapter 254

MARCO PECKED AT THE computer keys with his index fingers. He'd never picked up two-handed typing, and whenever possible, he kept far away from a computer. Especially if other people were around. This was an exception.Ghost paused from time to time to glance at Marco and snort. They didn't have time to toss the shit back and forth. At 10 a.m., Ghost had flipped the switch on his bit of code, locking everyone out of the Good Global network. It was time to force Fiona to come to them, before it was too late. They'd found Scott's true identity. In an odd turn of luck, it was Marco who lucked on the trail that led him from Scott DuPry of Vernon, West Virginia to a computer tech who had fixed Scott's laptop on a work trip to Boise, Idaho. According to data on that name, the tech had to be around a hundred and twenty years old. From there, Ghost and Marco had followed a digital trail of identities around the country. There was a pattern.Dead people's social security numbers r

Chapter 255

FIONA SAT HUDDLED IN the middle seat of the SUV. They'd packed the whole team, except one, into the truck when the time came to meet up with Marco. She still hadn't figured out who or what Scott was, but she knew he wasn't a federal officer. He'd lied to her, and these other men were in on it. He hadn't said it, and she hadn't acknowledged it, but she was pretty sure they were all aware the ruse was up.Fiona was a prisoner. And she'd walked into this trap of her own, free will. She gripped the arm rests with both hands. If only this was a rescue, and not an information swap. She was goods. A commodity. And both Marco and Scott wanted her because inside her head was the organizational structure for the NueEnergy files. Who would have thought one simple administrative task from her first year working for the company would lay the groundwork for-this?She was a cipher.A tool. That was what she was to them.Scott needed her to...she didn't know. He clearly wasn't trying t

Chapter 256

MARCO MUTTERED CURSES UNDER his breath. He'd known this was likely to happen. It's what he'd do in Scott's position."I've got the driver," Ghost said through the ear piece."Scott, don't do anything stupid," Marco said."You're forcing my hand here." Scott tightened his hold on Fiona. Her eyes were so wide and full of fear...Scott was going down. Marco didn't care what the cost was, he couldn't hurt Fiona like this."You're aware I'm not alone?" Marco swallowed. He wanted to charge over there and really kick this guy's ass. He hadn't done a good enough job the first time. Clearly."Your guy shoots me, I shoot her.""You do that, you get nothing.""We both get nothing." Scott grinned.Just what Marco thought. Scott wasn't in this for the money or anything tangible."Make the deal," Ghost said."How about this?" Marco shifted. Just a little. His gun was in the door of the car. He could grab it in a split second, but it might not be fast enough."The password,"

Chapter 257

SCOTT'S HANDS SHOOK. HIS stomach churned. Sweat soaked the back of his shirt. The suburban houses passed in a blur. The soldier boy knew. How the fuck did he know?Scott had covered his tracks. Nothing should be able to connect him with his handle. He'd been careful. So how had the idiot figured it out and not Brat?It was over. This whole ruse was done for. When they got back to the condo, he'd go out for something...and never come back. He'd found Brat once, he could find her again.A phone rang and Scott started.Goon #1 answered his cell, one hand on the wheel. His side of the conversation was monosyllabic.Scott could wait until the goons were off shining their guns or something. He'd go out through the garage and hoof it to the bus stop. He had a few things stashed across town. It wouldn't take long to get there. He'd burn this identity and figure it out from there. Yeah, he didn't have cash, but with Brat out of his hands, and no doubt headed straight to the FBI

MARCO CLOSED HIS EYES and squeezed Fiona. He doubted the moment would last, but for as long as she'd let him, he was going to hold her, damn it. Things were going to hell, and all he knew was that one way or another, he was going to get her out of this. The door swung open and Ghost stepped in.Talk about bad timing.Fiona's head jerked up, and she stepped away from Marco, glaring at him. Seems he wasn't forgiven after all. Not that he expected to be. If she hated him forever she'd be within her rights. "We've got problems," Ghost said."What now?" Marco flexed his hands. He was in the mood for a problem he could punch."I'm pretty sure we had a tail from the park.""What?" Marco stared at Ghost. And he was only now mentioning this?"I lost them, but we might want to move." Ghost crossed to the window and peered out.Fiona sat on the edge of the bed, her elbows on her knees and her chin in her hands."Let me see if I get it all straight," she said. "Your cousin is

Chapter 259

FIONA WALKED INTO ANOTHER hole-in-the-wall motel with dingy walls, the scent of pot in the air and beds that looked slept in."It's a shithole. I'm sorry." Marco closed the door behind her."It's four walls and a roof. It's great." Fiona tugged the comforter up over a pillow and sat down. It wasn't all that long ago, walls were considered optional so long as she had a roof. There'd been tough years growing up."Fiona...""What?" She was exhausted, and he kept doing this. Saying her name then staring at her, as if she could understand what he wasn't saying. But she didn't know him. Never really had."Nothing."She rolled her eyes and slid down to lay on her back.Marco circled the other bed and sat facing her."I just..."I just-what?I just screwed up?I just didn't think?I just fell crazy in love with you?I just can't help being a stupid, idiotic man?"What?" She sat up and swung her legs off the bed, facing him. "You just-what, Marco? What?""I didn't

Chapter 260

RANDY PROPPED HIS FEET up on the table and thumbed through the pages on his tablet.By all accounts, NueEnergy was gone. The news was abuzz with the sudden collapse of one of the companies at the forefront of the green energy game. It made for just the right amount of noise for him and his team to slip out unnoticed. Let the banks divide up what was left. Anything of value was already gone. The rest of it was just stuff. They were way off his time table, but by this time tomorrow Randy and the rest of his team would be headed home. The new security protocols would prevent a nightmare like this from happening again. The board was pushing back on his insistence to be involved with IT Security, but they'd come around. Once he laid out how lucky they were this whole thing hadn't wrecked them, they'd be begging him to take over. And maybe, just maybe, they'd offer him a bigger share in the company. After all, he was saving their bacon. The man across from him shifted. Metal scraped
